The relationship between surface electromyography (SEMG) amplitude and the ventilatory threshold has been extensively studied. However, previous studies of muscle fiber conduction velocity (MFCV) are scarce and present insufficient evidence concerning the relationship between MFCV and metabolic responses during cycling. Based on that fact, the purpose of this study is twofold: (1) to investigate the existence of a MFCV threshold (MFCVT) during cycling and (2) to verify if this possible breakpoint is correlated with the ventilatory threshold (VT) and the SEMG threshold (SEMGT). Eight trained male cyclists (age 36.0 ± 9.7 years) performed an incremental cycling test with initial workload of 150 W gradually incremented by 20 W min?1 until the exhaustion. Gas analyses were conducted using a breath-by-breath open-circuit spirometry and SEMG were registered from vastus lateralis in each pedaling cycle with a linear array of electrodes. A bi-segmental linear regression computer algorithm was used to estimate VT, MFCVT and SEMGT respectively in the carbon dioxide production (VCO2), MFCV and electromyography root mean square (EMG RMS) curves. The one way ANOVA for repeated measures did not reveal any significant difference among VT (77.1 ± 7.5% of VO2max), MFCVT (80.3 ± 10.4% of VO2max) and SEMGT (81.9 ± 11.7% of VO2max). The Bland and Altman procedure confirmed a good concordance between SEMGT and VT (Bias = 5.5 of %VO2max) as well as MFCVT and VT (Bias = 5.2 of %VO2max). The present findings suggest that muscle fiber conduction velocity threshold is a valid and reliable non-invasive tool to obtain information about ventilatory threshold in trained cyclists. 相似文献

Changes occurring after feeding in the digestive enzyme activities of European eel were investigated to provide some insights into the digestive physiology of this fish. Total and specific proteases, amylase and lipase activities were measured using standard biochemical assays over a 24 h cycle in fed eels, compared to starved ones, under the same rearing conditions. In the gastrointestinal tract of fed eels quantitative changes started 4 h after feeding and continued later on; conversely, in starved eels enzyme activities remained unchanged over time. In fed eels, total and specific protease activities showed an overall increasing trend in the intestine, while in the stomach they progressively decreased to values 22–50% lower than those measured at the pre-feeding time; this behaviour probably reflected the progression of digesta along the intestinal tract. The prolonged secretory response of European eel to food ingestion proved its extended activity in the digestive process. 相似文献

ABSTRACTSharks have been facing unprecedented pressure over the last decades, and ocean acidification may represent an additional threat, particularly during their most susceptible life stages. Hence, the present study aimed to investigate the effects of ocean acidification (control pCO2 ~ 400 μatm; high pCO2 ~ 900 μatm) on the growth, swimming performance and cholinergic system of juvenile white-spotted bamboo sharks (Chiloscyllium plagiosum). After 45 days of exposure, we observed that high CO2 did not affect most of the end-points studied. However, somatic growth rate and the percentage of time that sharks spent swimming was significantly reduced under high CO2 conditions. Moreover, AChE activity decreased in two of the seven brain macroareas analyzed, the telencephalon and optic lobes. As this near-threatened shark species showed small sub-lethal effects to high CO2 levels, we argue that within a longer time-frame they can potentially reduce individual performance with cascading consequences to shark population dynamics. 相似文献

One of the crucial factors for short- and long-term clinical success of total hip arthroplasty cementless implants is primary stability. Indeed, motion at the bone–implant interface above 40 μm leads to partial bone ingrowth, while motion exceeding 150 μm completely inhibits bone ingrowth. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of two cementless femoral stem designs with different lengths on the primary stability. A finite element model of a composite Sawbones® fourth generation, implanted with five lengths of the straight prosthesis design and four lengths of the curved prosthesis design, was loaded with hip joint and abductor forces representing two physiological activities: fast walking and stair climbing. We found that reducing the straight stem length from 146 to 54 mm increased the average micromotion from 17 to 52 μm during fast walking, while the peak value increased from 42 to 104 μm. With the curved stem, reducing length from 105 to 54 mm increased the average micromotion from 10 to 29 μm, while the peak value increased from 37 to 101 μm. Similar findings are obtained for stair climbing for both stems. Although the present study showed that femoral stem length as well as stem design directly influences its primary stability, for the two femoral stems tested, length could be reduced substantially without compromising the primary stability. With the aim of minimising surgical invasiveness, newer femoral stem design and currently well performing stems might be used with a reduced length without compromising primary stability and hence, long-term survivorship. 相似文献

A numerical pressure loss model previously used for adult human airways has been modified to simulate the inhalation pressure distribution in a healthy 9-month-old infant lung morphology model. Pressure distributions are calculated for air as well as helium and xenon mixtures with oxygen to investigate the effects of gas density and viscosity variations for this age group. The results indicate that there are significant pressure losses in infant extrathoracic airways due to inertial effects leading to much higher pressures to drive nominal flows in the infant airway model than for an adult airway model. For example, the pressure drop through the nasopharynx model of the infant is much greater than that for the nasopharynx model of the adult; that is, for the adult-versus-child the pressure differences are 0.08 cm H2O versus 0.4 cm H2O, 0.16 cm H2O versus 1.9 cm H2O and 0.4 cm H2O versus 7.7 cm H2O, breathing helium–oxygen (78/22%), nitrogen–oxygen (78/22%) and xenon–oxygen (60/40%), respectively. Within the healthy lung, viscous losses are of the same order for the three gas mixtures, so the differences in pressure distribution are relatively small. 相似文献

AbstractObjectives: The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the distribution and magnitude of stresses through the bone tissue surrounding Morse taper dental implants at different positioning relative to the bone crest. Materials and Methods: A mandibular bone model was obtained from a computed tomography scan. A three-dimensional (3D) model of Morse taper implant-abutment systems placed at the bone crest (equicrestal) and 2?mm bellow the bone crest (subcrestal) were assessed by finite element analysis (FEA). FEA was carried out on axial and oblique (45°) loading at 150 N relatively to the central axis of the implant. The von Mises stresses were analysed considering magnitude and volume of affected peri-implant bone. Results: On vertical loading, maximum von Mises stresses were recorded at 6-7?MPa for trabecular bone while values ranging from 73 up to 118?MPa were recorded for cortical bone. On oblique loading at the equiquestral or subcrestal positioning, the maximum von Mises stresses ranged from 15 to 21?MPa for trabecular bone while values at 150?MPa were recorded for the cortical bone. On vertical loading, >99.9vol.% cortical bone volume was subjected to a maximum of 2?MPa while von Mises stress values at 15?MPa were recorded for trabecular bone. On oblique loading, >99.9vol.% trabecular bone volume was subjected to maximum stress values at 5?MPa, while von Mises stress values at 35?MPa were recorded for >99.4vol.% cortical bone. Conclusions: Bone volume-based stress analysis revealed that most of the bone volume (>99% by vol) was subjected to significantly lower stress values around Morse taper implants placed at equicrestal or subcrestal positioning. Such analysis is commentary to the ordinary biomechanical assessment of dental implants concerning the stress distribution through peri-implant sites. 相似文献

A new serine-carboxyl proteinase, called kumamolisin-ac, was purified from the thermoacidophilic bacterium Alicyclobacillus acidocaldarius. The enzyme is a monomeric protein of 45?kDa, active over a wide temperature range (5.0–70°C) and extremely acidic pHs (1.0–4.0), showing maximal proteolytic activity at pH?2.0 and 60°C. Interestingly, kumamolisin-ac displayed a significant proteolytic activity even at 5°C, thus suggesting a sort of cold-adaptation for this enzyme. The protease was remarkably stable at high temperatures (t1/2 at 80°C, 10?h, pH?2.0) and over a broad range of pH (2.0–7.0). Substrate analysis indicated that kumamolisin-ac was active on a variety of macromolecular substrates, such as haemoglobin, hide powder azure, and azocoll. In particular, a high specific activity was detected towards collagen. The corresponding gene was cloned, expressed and the recombinant protease, was found to be homologous to proteases of the ‘S53’ family. From the high identity with kumamolisin and kumamolisin-As, known as collagenolytic proteases, kumamolisin-ac can be considered as the third collagenolytic affiliate within the ‘S53’ family. Cleavage specificity investigation of kumamolisin-ac revealed a unique primary cleavage site in bovine insulin B-chain, whereas a broad specificity was detected using bovine α-globin as substrate. Thus, kumamolisin-ac could represent an attractive candidate for industrial-scale biopeptide production under thermoacidophilic conditions. 相似文献

An object-oriented modelling framework for the arterial wall is presented. The novelty of the framework is the possibility to generate customisable artery models, taking advantage of imaging technology. In our knowledge, this is the first object-oriented modelling framework for the arterial wall. Existing models do not allow close structural mapping with arterial microstructure as in the object-oriented framework. In the implemented model, passive behaviour of the arterial wall was considered and the tunica adventitia was the objective system. As verification, a model of an arterial segment was generated. In order to simulate its deformation, a matrix structural mechanics simulator was implemented. Two simulations were conducted, one for an axial loading test and other for a pressure–volume test. Each simulation began with a sensitivity analysis in order to determinate the best parameter combination and to compare the results with analogue controls. In both cases, the simulated results closely reproduced qualitatively and quantitatively the analogue control plots. 相似文献

Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBDs) are chronic inflammatory disorders of the gastrointestinal tract that affect more than 3 million people worldwide, but the pathological etiology is still unknown. The overall purpose of our investigations was to elucidate the possibility of pathological causes of IBD, and therefore, we determined the difference of inflammatory cytokine profiles in adipose tissue macrophages (ATMs) and T lymphocytes (ATTs) obtained near active lesions of IBD; investigated whether the alteration in ATM activation induces genes involved in collagen formation; and evaluated the effects of fatty acid oxidation inhibitors on factors involved in inflammation and collagen production by ATMs in IBD. Adipose tissues (ATs) were collected near active lesions and also at the margin of resected segments of the bowel from IBD patients with ulcerative colitis (UC) and CD (n = 14/group). Normal appearing ATs from control subjects (n = 14) who had colon resection for adenocarcinoma were collected as far away from the cancer lesion as possible to rule out possible changes. Compared with inactive disease lesions, ATMs and ATTs from active lesions released more IL-6, IL-4 and IL-13. Treatments of cytokine IL-4 and/or IL-13 to ATMs reduced iNOS expression but increased Arg-I expression which were exacerbated when treated with T cell- and adipocyte-conditioned medium. However, fatty acid oxidation inhibitors prevented the effects of cytokines IL-4 and/or IL-13 on iNOS and Arg-I expressions. This study was the first to show the effect of IL-4 and IL-13 on collagen formation, through iNOS and Arg-I expressions, that was exacerbated in a condition that mimics in vivo condition of active lesions. Moreover, our study was the first to provide potential benefits of fatty acid oxidation inhibitors to ATMs on preventing collagen formation; thus, providing therapeutic implications for individuals with intestinal fibrosis and stricture lesions, although future study should be guaranteed to elucidate the underlying mechanisms. 相似文献

A really unexpected finding of sauropod and theropod footprints in southern Latium raises to four the number of the trampled levels recognized in central and southern Italy. After the recent findings in Latest Jurassic and Early, mid and Late Cretaceous carbonate platform deposits of the Periadriatic region, dinosaur footprints seem to provide very important paleogeographic constraints for reconstructing the geodynamic history of the Mediterranean area. The presence of a varied ichnoassociation makes acceptance of the current paleogeographic models concerning the relative and absolute position of the Laziale-Abruzzese-Campano and of Apulian-Dinaric domains during the Late Cretaceous more and more problematic. Dinosaur footprints, combined with other paleontological data, demonstrate that these areas were never completely pulled apart by deep seaways, while frequent or continuous links between them, and to southern and northern mainlands, probably persisted. These data also allowed us to improve our understanding of the timing of the Mesozoic plate motion in this segment of the Western Tethys. 相似文献
