The invasive Burmese python (Python bivittatus) has been reproducing in the Florida Everglades since the 1980s. These giant constrictor snakes have caused a precipitous decline in small mammal populations in southern Florida following escapes or releases from the commercial pet trade. To better understand the invasion pathway and genetic composition of the population, two mitochondrial (mtDNA) loci across 1,398 base pairs were sequenced on 426 snakes and 22 microsatellites were assessed on 389 snakes. Concatenated mtDNA sequences produced six haplotypes with an average nucleotide and haplotype diversity of π = 0.002 and = 0.097, respectively. Samples collected in Florida from morphologically identified P. bivittatus snakes were similar to published cytochrome oxidase 1 and cytochrome b sequences from both P. bivittatus and Python molurus and were highly divergent (genetic distances of 5.4% and 4.3%, respectively). The average number of microsatellite alleles and expected heterozygosity were NA = 5.50 and HE = 0.60, respectively. Nuclear Bayesian assignment tests supported two genetically distinct groups and an admixed group, not geographically differentiated. The effective population size (NE = 315.1) was lower than expected for a population this large, but reflected the low genetic diversity overall. The patterns of genetic diversity between mtDNA and microsatellites were disparate, indicating nuclear introgression of separate mtDNA lineages corresponding to cytonuclear discordance. The introgression likely occurred prior to the invasion, but genetic information on the native range and commercial trade is needed for verification. Our finding that the Florida python population is comprised of distinct lineages suggests greater standing variation for adaptation and the potential for broader areas of suitable habitat in the invaded range.  相似文献

Tropical forest loss and fragmentation can change bee community dynamics and potentially interrupt plant–pollinator relationships. While bee community responses to forest fragmentation have been investigated in a number of tropical regions, no studies have focused on this topic in Australia. In this study, we examine taxonomic and functional diversity of bees visiting flowers of three tree species across small and large rainforest fragments in Australian tropical landscapes. We found lower taxonomic diversity of bees visiting flowers of trees in small rainforest fragments compared with large forest fragments and show that bee species in small fragments were subsets of species in larger fragments. Bees visiting trees in small fragments also had higher mean body sizes than those in larger fragments, suggesting that small‐sized bees may be less likely to persist in small fragments. Lastly, we found reductions in the abundance of eusocial stingless bees visiting flowers in small fragments compared to large fragments. These results suggest that pollinator visits to native trees living in small tropical forest remnants may be reduced, which may in turn impact on a range of processes, potentially including forest regeneration and diversity maintenance in small forest remnants in Australian tropical countryside landscapes.  相似文献

Most pair-living primate species engage in duets, wherein males and females produce coordinated vocalizations. Previous analyses of male gibbon contributions to the duet have shown that calls are individually distinct. Here we investigate variation in the temporal and spectral parameters in the male contribution to the duet, also known as the coda, of wild, nonhabituated male Müller’s Bornean gibbons (Hylobates muelleri), recorded both opportunistically and as a response to playbacks at the Stability of Altered Forest Ecosystems site in Sabah, Malaysia. We used linear discriminant function analysis to estimate the intra- and interindividual variation in 13 spectral and temporal parameters of the vocalizations (N?=?337) of 31 male gibbons. To further understand how call features vary within and between individuals we used a multivariate, variance components model to investigate how variance in features was partitioned at these two levels. We could identify males with a 66% accuracy using leave-one-out cross-validation, a relatively low score compared to female Müller’s Bornean gibbons and males of other species. We found that for some features (such as maximum frequency of the notes) most of the variance occurred between males, but for others (specifically total duration of the call and duration of rest in between notes) most of the variance occurred within a single male. Overall, male Müller’s Bornean gibbon coda vocalizations showed greater variability relative to their female counterparts, raising questions about potential differences in the function of the male and female contributions to the duet in Müller’s Bornean gibbons and the gibbon taxon as a whole.  相似文献

The use of transposable elements (TEs) as genetic drive mechanisms was explored using Drosophila melanogaster as a model system. Alternative strategies, employing autonomous and nonautonomous P element constructs were compared for their efficiency in driving the ry+ allele into populations homozygous for a ry- allele at the genomic rosy locus. Transformed flies were introduced at 1%, 5%, and 10% starting frequencies to establish a series of populations that were monitored over the course of 40 generations, using both phenotypic and molecular assays. The transposon-borne ry+ marker allele spread rapidly in almost all populations when introduced at 5% and 10% seed frequencies, but 1% introductions frequently failed to become established. A similar initial rapid increase in frequency of the ry+ transposon occurred in several control populations lacking a source of transposase. Constructs carrying ry+ markers also increased to moderate frequencies in the absence of selection on the marker. The results of Southern and in situ hybridization studies indicated a strong inverse relationship between the degree of conservation of construct integrity and transposition frequency. These finding have relevance to possible future applications of transposons as genetic drive mechanisms. The role ofNa+-K+-2Clcotransport in ion and fluid transport of the corneal endothelium wasexamined by measuring changes in corneal hydration and uptake of86Rb by the endothelial celllayer. Isolated, intact rabbit corneas maintain normal hydration whenthey are superfused at the endothelial surface with bicarbonate()-Ringer solutions as aresult of equilibrium between active ion and fluid transport out of thestromal tissue and leak of fluid into stromal tissue from the aqueoushumor. Furosemide and bumetanide did not alter this equilibrium whenthey were added to the superfusion medium. Uptake of86Rb by the endothelium of theincubated cornea was increased 25% by bumetanide, but uptake in thepresence of ouabain (70% less than that of controls) was not changedby bumetanide. In Na+-free medium,uptake of 86Rb was reduced by58%, but it was unchanged inCl-free medium. CalyculinA, a protein phosphatase inhibitor and activator ofNa+-K+-Clcotransport, was without effect on86Rb uptake. Hypertonicity (345 mosmol/kg) increased uptake slightly, whereas hypotonicity (226 mosmol/kg) caused a 33% decrease. Neither of these changes wassignificantly different when bumetanide was present in the media. It isconcluded thatNa+-K+-2Clcotransporter activity is not exhibited by the in situ corneal endothelium and does not play a role in the ion and fluid transport ofthis cell layer. Its presence in cultured endothelial cells may reflectthe reported importance of this protein in growth, proliferation, anddifferentiation.

Fossorial lizards differ in morphology from their surface-dwelling relatives. The Australian sphenomorphine skink genus Ctenotus consists of surface-dwelling species, and is closely related to the genus Lerista, which includes both surface-dwelling and fossorial species. Sand-swimming represents the derived condition and has evolved independently in several lineages of Lerista. The heads of lizards in the two genera differ in shape (blunt snout for Ctenotus versus wedge-shaped for Lerista) and in length relative to the body (approximately 20% of snout-vent length for Ctenotus versus 12% for sand-swimming Lerista). Do these specializations affect the sizes or types of prey that can be consumed by Lerista? We compared prey-handling by Ctenotus and Lerista to correlate morphological differences with differences in prey-handling ability, and to distinguish the effects of snout shape and head length. Feeding trials included three categories of insect prey that the lizards normally eat: soft-bodied larvae (Lepidoptera), hard-bodied larvae (Coleoptera), and roaches (Blatoidea). In comparisons based on the mass of a prey item relative to the mass of a lizard, Lerista had longer handling times for all prey categories and were limited to smaller prey than were Ctenotus. However, when comparisons were based on the length of prey relative to the length of a lizard's head, Lerista ate some elongate prey as fast or faster than did Ctenotus, and both genera successfully swallowed prey more than twice the length of their own head. Thus, the differences in prey-handling performance of Ctenotus and Lerista probably result from the fact that Lerista have a relatively shorter head than Ctenotus. All Lerista species, surface-dwelling and fossorial, have short heads compared to primitive sphenomorphine lizards. Fossorial species of Lerista have elongate trunks, and consequently their heads are shorter in proportion to trunk length than those of surface-dwelling Lerista. However, most fossorial species of Lerista are longer and heavier than any of their surface-dwelling congeners, and the heads of these fossorial species are large relative to the prey they encounter. As a consequence, the diets of large fossorial species of Lerista do not appear to be limited by their morphological specialization for sand-swimming.  相似文献
