While the demonstrated power conversion efficiency of organic photovoltaics (OPVs) now exceeds 10%, new design rules are required to tailor interfaces at the molecular level for optimal exciton dissociation and charge transport in higher efficiency devices. We show that molecular shape‐complementarity between donors and acceptors can drive performance in OPV devices. Using core hole clock (CHC) X‐ray spectroscopy and density functional theory (DFT), we compare the electronic coupling, assembly, and charge transfer rates at the interface between C60 acceptors and flat‐ or contorted‐hexabenzocorone (HBC) donors. The HBC donors have similar optoelectronic properties but differ in molecular contortion and shape matching to the fullerene acceptors. We show that shape‐complementarity drives self‐assembly of an intermixed morphology with a donor/acceptor (D/A) ball‐and‐socket interface, which enables faster electron transfer from HBC to C60. The supramolecular assembly and faster electron transfer rates in the shape complementary heterojunction lead to a larger active volume and enhanced exciton dissociation rate. This work provides fundamental mechanistic insights on the improved efficiency of organic photovoltaic devices that incorporate these concave/convex D/A materials. 相似文献

Objective
To describe the daily work practice under the threat of defensive medicine among obstetricians and gynecologists.Study Design
A prospective cross-sectional survey of obstetricians and gynecologists working at tertiary medical centers in Israel.Results
Among the 117 obstetricians and gynecologists who participated in the survey, representing 10% of the obstetricians and gynecologists registered by the Israel Medical Association, 113 (97%) felt that their daily work practice is influenced by concern about being sued for medical negligence and not only by genuine medical considerations. As a result, 102 (87%) physicians are more likely to offer the cesarean section option, even in the absence of a clear medical indication, 70 (60%) follow court rulings concerning medical practices, and 85 (73%) physicians mentioned that discussions about medical negligence court rulings are included in their departments'' meetings.Conclusions
Defensive medicine is a well-embedded phenomenon affecting the medical decision process of obstetricians and gynecologists. 相似文献14.
Abstract We investigate the selective adsorption of xenon, argon, and methane in zeolite NaA by applying the grand canonical ensemble Monte Carlo simulation technique to an adsorbed binary mixture and to two reference systems: i) an adsorbed single component system and ii) a bulk mixture. We define and calculate selectivities and excess densities due to i) mixing and ii) adsorption in terms of differences between the binary adsorbed system and these reference systems. We observe that xenon selectively adsorbs in both xenon-argon and xenon-methane mixtures at low chemical potential (low pressure) due to its greater energetic interaction with the zeolite. However, a reversal in selectivity occurs at higher chemical potential in both of these mixtures. This is due in large part to the greater efficiency in which the smaller component “packs” in the pore as compared to the bulk. We show that the crossover in selectivity occurs at a lower chemical potential for a mixture where one component can occupy regions of the porespace inaccessible to the other. We suggest that this crossover in selectivity may be a general feature of microporous adsorption. 相似文献

The trimeric envelope glycoprotein (Env) of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) mediates virus entry into host cells. CD4 engagement with the gp120 exterior envelope glycoprotein subunit represents the first step during HIV-1 entry. CD4-induced conformational changes in the gp120 inner domain involve three potentially flexible topological layers (layers 1, 2, and 3). Structural rearrangements between layer 1 and layer 2 have been shown to facilitate the transition of the envelope glycoprotein trimer from the unliganded to the CD4-bound state and to stabilize gp120-CD4 interaction. However, our understanding of CD4-induced conformational changes in the gp120 inner domain remains incomplete. Here, we report that a highly conserved element of the gp120 inner domain, layer 3, plays a pivot-like role in these allosteric changes. In the unliganded state, layer 3 modulates the association of gp120 with the Env trimer, probably by influencing the relationship of the gp120 inner and outer domains. Importantly, layer 3 governs the efficiency of the initial gp120 interaction with CD4, a function that can also be fulfilled by filling the Phe43 cavity. This work defines the functional importance of layer 3 and completes a picture detailing the role of the gp120 inner domain in CD4-induced conformational transitions in the HIV-1 Env trimer. 相似文献

Dysregulated angiogenesis contributes to the pathogenesis of chronic inflammatory diseases. Modulation of the extracellular matrix by immune-derived proteases can alter endothelial cell–matrix interactions as well as endothelial cell sprouting, migration and capillary formation. Granzyme B is a serine protease that is expressed by a variety of immune cells, and accumulates in the extracellular milieu in many chronic inflammatory disorders that are associated with dysregulated angiogenesis. Although granzyme B is known to cleave fibronectin, an essential glycoprotein in vascular morphogenesis, the role of granzyme B in modulating angiogenesis is unknown. In the present study, granzyme B cleaved both plasma fibronectin and cell-derived fibronectin, resulting in the release of multiple fibronectin fragments. Granzyme B cleavage of fibronectin resulted in a dose-dependent reduction in endothelial cell adhesion to fibronectin as well as reduced endothelial cell migration and tubular formation. These events were prevented when granzyme B activity was inhibited by a small molecule inhibitor. In summary, granzyme B-mediated cleavage of fibronectin contributes to attenuated angiogenesis through the disruption of endothelial cell — fibronectin interaction resulting in impaired endothelial cell migration and tubular formation. 相似文献

When organisms perform a single task, selection leads to phenotypes that maximize performance at that task. When organisms need to perform multiple tasks, a trade‐off arises because no phenotype can optimize all tasks. Recent work addressed this question, and assumed that the performance at each task decays with distance in trait space from the best phenotype at that task. Under this assumption, the best‐fitness solutions (termed the Pareto front) lie on simple low‐dimensional shapes in trait space: line segments, triangles and other polygons. The vertices of these polygons are specialists at a single task. Here, we generalize this finding, by considering performance functions of general form, not necessarily functions that decay monotonically with distance from their peak. We find that, except for performance functions with highly eccentric contours, simple shapes in phenotype space are still found, but with mildly curving edges instead of straight ones. In a wide range of systems, complex data on multiple quantitative traits, which might be expected to fill a high‐dimensional phenotype space, is predicted instead to collapse onto low‐dimensional shapes; phenotypes near the vertices of these shapes are predicted to be specialists, and can thus suggest which tasks may be at play. 相似文献

Most genes change expression levels across conditions, but it is unclear which of these changes represents specific regulation and what determines their quantitative degree. Here, we accurately measured activities of ~900 S. cerevisiae and ~1800 E. coli promoters using fluorescent reporters. We show that in both organisms 60–90% of promoters change their expression between conditions by a constant global scaling factor that depends only on the conditions and not on the promoter's identity. Quantifying such global effects allows precise characterization of specific regulation—promoters deviating from the global scale line. These are organized into few functionally related groups that also adhere to scale lines and preserve their relative activities across conditions. Thus, only several scaling factors suffice to accurately describe genome‐wide expression profiles across conditions. We present a parameter‐free passive resource allocation model that quantitatively accounts for the global scaling factors. It suggests that many changes in expression across conditions result from global effects and not specific regulation, and provides means for quantitative interpretation of expression profiles. 相似文献

IntroductionSmall fiber neuropathy might be a part of typical mixed small and large fiber neuropathy, or a distinct entity, affecting exclusively small nerve fibers.ObjectivesExplore the utility of small nerve fiber testing in patients with clinical presentation suggesting small fiber neuropathy, with and without evidence for concomitant large fiber neuropathy.MethodsPatients attending the neuromuscular clinic from 2012 to 2015 with a clinical presentation suggesting small nerve fiber impairment, who had Laser Doppler flare imaging (LDIFlare) and quantitative thermal testing (QTT) were evaluated for this study. Patients with clinical or electrophysiological evidence for concomitant large fiber neuropathy were not excluded.ResultsThe sensitivities of LDIFlare, cooling and heat threshold testing were 64%, 36%, and 0% respectively for clinically highly suggestive small fiber neuropathy, 64%, 56%, and 19% respectively for mixed fiber neuropathy, and 86%, 79%, and 29% respectively for diabetic mixed fiber neuropathy.DiscussionLDIFlare and cooling thresholds testing are non-invasive small nerve fiber testing modalities, with moderate performance in patients with small and mixed fiber neuropathy, and excellent performance in diabetic mixed fiber neuropathy. 相似文献
