• Premise of the study: Hybridization is an important evolutionary force in the history of angiosperms; however, there are few examples of stabilized species derived through homoploid hybrid speciation. Homoploid hybrid species are generally detected via the presence of genetic additivity of parental markers, novel ecological and spatial distinctions, and novel morphological traits, all of which may aid in the successful establishment of hybrid species from parental types. Speciation and diversification within the genus Castilleja (Orobanchaceae) has been attributed to high levels of hybridization and polyploidy, though currently there are no examples of homoploid hybrid speciation within the genus. We employed multiple lines of evidence to examine a putative hybrid origin in C. christii, a rare endemic, known only from 80 hectares at the summit of Mt. Harrison (Cassia Co., Idaho). • Methods: We used granule-bound starch synthase II (waxy) sequences and 26 morphological characters to address hybridization between C. christii and widespread congeners C. miniata and/or C. linariifolia in an area of sympatry. Chromosomes of C. christii were also counted for the first time. • Key results: All 230 direct-sequenced C. christii individuals had the additive genomes of both C. miniata and C. linariifolia. Castilleja christii shares traits with both parents but also has floral characters that are unique and transgressive. Cytological counts indicated that all three taxa are diploid. • Conclusions: We conclude that C. christii is a stabilized homoploid hybrid derivative of C. linariifolia and C. miniata and is likely following an independent evolutionary trajectory from its progenitors. 相似文献

This study represents the first attempt to study the population dynamics of Guiana dolphins (Sotalia guianensis), by evaluating a set of demographic parameters. The population of the Caravelas River estuary, eastern Brazil, was systematically monitored through a long‐term mark‐recapture experiment (2002–2009). Abundance estimates revealed a small population (57–124 dolphins), comprised of resident dolphins and individuals that temporarily leave or pass through the study area. Temporary emigration from the estuary to adjacencies (γ″= 0.33 ± 0.07 SE) and return rate (1 ?γ′= 0 .67) were moderate and constant, indicating that some dolphins use larger areas. Survival rate (?= 0.88 ± 0.07 SE) and abundance were constant throughout the study period. Power analysis showed that the current monitoring effort has high probability of detecting abrupt population declines (1 ?β= 0.9). Although the monitoring is not yet sensitive to subtle population trends, sufficient time to identify them is feasible (additional 3 yr). Despite such apparent stability, this population, as many others, inhabits waters exposed to multiple human‐related threats. Open and closed population modeling applied to photo‐identification data provide a robust baseline for estimating several demographic parameters and can be applied to other populations to allow further comparisons. Cannabidiol (CBD) is a major phytocannabinoid present in the Cannabis sativa plant. It lacks the psychotomimetic and other psychotropic effects that the main plant compound Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) being able, on the contrary, to antagonize these effects. This property, together with its safety profile, was an initial stimulus for the investigation of CBD pharmacological properties. It is now clear that CBD has therapeutic potential over a wide range of non-psychiatric and psychiatric disorders such as anxiety, depression and psychosis. Although the pharmacological effects of CBD in different biological systems have been extensively investigated by in vitro studies, the mechanisms responsible for its therapeutic potential are still not clear. Here, we review recent in vivo studies indicating that these mechanisms are not unitary but rather depend on the behavioural response being measured. Acute anxiolytic and antidepressant-like effects seem to rely mainly on facilitation of 5-HT1A-mediated neurotransmission in key brain areas related to defensive responses, including the dorsal periaqueductal grey, bed nucleus of the stria terminalis and medial prefrontal cortex. Other effects, such as anti-compulsive, increased extinction and impaired reconsolidation of aversive memories, and facilitation of adult hippocampal neurogenesis could depend on potentiation of anandamide-mediated neurotransmission. Finally, activation of TRPV1 channels may help us to explain the antipsychotic effect and the bell-shaped dose-response curves commonly observed with CBD. Considering its safety profile and wide range of therapeutic potential, however, further studies are needed to investigate the involvement of other possible mechanisms (e.g. inhibition of adenosine uptake, inverse agonism at CB2 receptor, CB1 receptor antagonism, GPR55 antagonism, PPARγ receptors agonism, intracellular (Ca2+) increase, etc.), on CBD behavioural effects. 相似文献

This study was carried out to evaluate maize plants of different recurrent selection cycles of the variety (Zea mays L.—Saracura-BRS-4154) regarded to genetic gains, morphophysiology, and grain yield, achieved over the selection cycles under
intermittent flooding of the soil. This variety has the capacity to survive and produce in temporarily flooded soils and was
developed by the National Maize and Sorghum Research Center (EMBRAPA). The experiment was conducted in greenhouse by using
ten alternating selection cycles (Cycle 1–18) and BR 107 a variety known for its susceptibility to flooding. The flooding
initiated at six-leaf stage by applying 50 mm of water three times a week. At flowering, the following parameters were evaluated:
rate of leaf photosynthesis, stomatal conductance, intercellular CO2 concentration, transpiration rate, photosynthetically active leaf area, root porosity, relative chlorophyll content, grain
yield, harvest index, ear length, and interval between male and female flowering. Yield as a function of root porosity and
photosynthesis were also evaluated. An index was created in this study, in order to help the discussion of the characteristics
evaluated, it was called “Relative Tolerance Value—RTV”, only gaseous exchange measurements was not included in this index.
By the way, it was observed throughout the selection cycles an increase in all gaseous exchange parameters, being the cycle
18, the one which presented the greatest averages. RTV for leaf area showed the greatest values for cycles 7 and 18, whereas
root porosity, chlorophyll relative content, and harvest index, the greater RTV values were found in cycles 17 and 18. The
largest grain yield RTV was observed in cycle 7, followed by cycles 13, 15, and 18. Flooding resulted in longer Anthesis-Silking
Interval, especially for the first cycles. At flooding condition, grain yield was strongly related to root porosity (R
2 = 0.66). These results showed that the selection cycles of “Saracura” maize improved some morphophysiologic characters, which

The generation of transgenic mosquitoes with a minimal fitness load is a prerequisite for the success of strategies for controlling mosquito-borne diseases using transgenic insects. It is important to assemble as much information as possible on this subject because realistic estimates of transgene fitness costs are essential for modeling and planning release strategies. Transgenic mosquitoes must have minimal fitness costs, because such costs would reduce the effectiveness of the genetic drive mechanisms that are used to introduce the transgenes into field mosquito populations. Several factors affect fitness of transgenic mosquitoes, including the potential negative effect of transgene products and insertional mutagenesis. Background and Aims
The pollination biology of very few Chloraeinae orchids has been studied to date, and most of these studies have focused on breeding systems and fruiting success. Chloraea membranacea Lindl. is one of the few non-Andean species in this group, and the aim of the present contribution is to elucidate the pollination biology, functional floral morphology and breeding system in native populations of this species from Argentina (Buenos Aires) and Brazil (Rio Grande do Sul State).Methods
Floral features were examined using light microscopy, and scanning and transmission electron microscopy. The breeding system was studied by means of controlled pollinations applied to plants, either bagged in the field or cultivated in a glasshouse. Pollination observations were made on natural populations, and pollinator behaviour was recorded by means of photography and video.Key Results
Both Argentinean and Brazilian plants were very consistent regarding all studied features. Flowers are nectarless but scented and anatomical analysis indicates that the dark, clavate projections on the adaxial labellar surface are osmophores (scent-producing glands). The plants are self-compatible but pollinator-dependent. The fruit-set obtained through cross-pollination and manual self-pollination was almost identical. The main pollinators are male and female Halictidae bees that withdraw the pollinarium when leaving the flower. Remarkably, the bees tend to visit more than one flower per inflorescence, thus promoting self-pollination (geitonogamy). Fruiting success in Brazilian plants reached 60·78 % in 2010 and 46 % in 2011. Some pollinarium-laden female bees were observed transferring pollen from the carried pollinarium to their hind legs. The use of pollen by pollinators is a rare record for Orchidaceae in general.Conclusions
Chloraea membrancea is pollinated by deceit. Together, self-compatibility, pollinarium texture, pollinator abundance and behaviour may account for the observed high fruiting success. Stochastic computer simulations are used to evaluate the sensitivity of Little bustard population parameters, estimating the
survival probabilities of the seven endangered Little bustard populations of central-western France for which conservation
actions are currentlybeing or have been implemented. Different scenarios of parameter compensation for those nuclei to establish
parameter levels assuring population viability are discussed. Adult survival, productivity per female, initial population
size and carrying capacity were the most sensitive parameters in a hypothetical, isolated population. Juvenile survival also
affected population survival, although its sensitivity was lower. Sex ratio did not have a linear effect on population survival,
but probability of extinction increased for extreme values. Productivity per female and initial population size, varied strongly
among the populations studied, determining their average time of extinction and growth rate. When a metapopulation scenario
was simulated, the survival probabilities of each population and the metapopulations stayed close to 1.0 if no mortality was
associated to migration. When mortality during migration was included in the simulations, the metapopulation's probability
of survival significantly decreased under 90%. This approach may help managers to correctly address conservation measures
and design effective strategies, which should be directed mainly to improve productivity, enhance female survival, and minimise
mortality during migration (e.g. promoting insect-rich nesting substrates, avoiding female killing and nest destruction at
harvesting, reducing the risk of collision with powerlines, or controlling poaching). 相似文献
