The codling moth (Cydia pomonella (L.)) is an invasive pest of pome fruits introduced to the Americas in the 19–20th centuries. This pest is widespread on both sides of the Andes range separating Argentina and Chile. We performed an analysis of the population genetic variability and structure of Cpomonella in Argentina and Chile using 13 microsatellite markers and sampled C. pomonella from apple as the main host plant along its distribution area (approx. 1,800 km). A total of 22 locations (11 from Chile and 11 from Argentina) were sampled. Significant genetic differentiation was observed among samples from Argentina and Chile (FSC = 0.045) and between all localities (FST = 0.085). Significant isolation by distance (IBD) was found for each country and when samples from both sides of the Andes range were pooled, although a lower correlation coefficient was observed. The Mantel test showed that the geographic distance and highest altitude of the mountains between locations were significantly associated with the pairwise FST when samples from both sides of the Andes range were pooled. According to a Bayesian assignment test (STRUCTURE), samples from Argentina and Chile conformed to two distinct genetic clusters. Our results also suggest that the recent invasion of Cpomonella in the southernmost localities (Aysén Region in Chile and Santa Cruz Province in Argentina) originated in populations from the respective sides of the Andes range. Our results indicate a genetic exchange of Cpomonella within each country and significant genetic differentiation between countries, which could be explained by dispersal mediated by human activities related to fruit production within each country with little exchange between them. A possible explanation is that the Andes range could be a significant barrier for dispersal by flight, and quarantine barriers could prevent the movement of plant material or infested fruit between countries.  相似文献

Question: What is the role of mound‐building ants (Lasius flavus) in successional changes of a grassland ecosystem towards a spruce forest? Location: Slovenské Rudohorie Mountains, Slovakia; ca. 950 m a.s.l. near the Obrubovanec point (1020 m a.s.l.; 48°41′N, 19°39′E). Methods: Both chronosequence data along a successional gradient and temporal data from long‐term permanent plots were collected on ants, spruce establishment, and vegetation structure, together with additional data on spruce growth. Results: There are more spruce seedlings on ant mounds (4.72 m?2) than in the surrounding vegetation (0.81 m?2). Spruce seedlings grow faster on these mounds compared to surrounding areas. The first colonization wave of seedlings was rapid and probably occurred when grazing prevailed over mowing. Ant colony presence, mound volume, and plant species composition change along the successional gradient. Mounds become bigger when partly shaded but shrink in closed forest, when ant colonies disappear. Shade‐tolerant acidophylic species replace grassland plants both on the mounds and in surrounding areas. Conclusions: The massive occurrence of Lasius flavus anthills contributes to a runaway feedback process that accelerates succession towards forest. The effect of ants as ecosystem engineers is scale‐dependent: although they stabilize the system at the scale of an individual mound, they may destabilize the whole grassland system over a longer time scale if combined with changes in mowing regime.  相似文献

aro mutants of Salmonella enterica are frequently used as live vaccines for the oral vaccination of domestic animals. Interestingly, besides their auxotrophy, they appear to be of reduced resistance to the components of innate immune response due to a defect in outer membrane and/or cell wall integrity. Because different extracellular structures associated with the cell wall or outer membrane are involved in biofilm formation, we were interested in the ability of aroA and aroD mutants of S . Enteritidis to adhere to solid surfaces. We found that aroA and aroD mutants did not adhere to solid surfaces although they bind Congo red and produced d -mannose and d -glucose capsular polysaccharides in the same amounts as the wild-type strain. However, the aro mutants exhibited a decreased production of cellulose, N -acetyl- d -glucosamine or N -acetylneuraminic acid containing capsular polysaccharide and fimbriae which explains their inability to form biofilms. aroA and aroD containing plasmids complemented all the defects of the aro mutants. Beside its attenuation for different hosts, the loss of ability to form biofilm is an additional interesting characteristic of aro mutants.  相似文献

We have shown that aluminum (Al) induces cholestasis associated with multiple alterations in hepatocellular transporters involved in bile secretory function, like Mrp2. This work aims to investigate whether these harmful effects are mediated by the oxidative stress caused by the metal. For this purpose, the capability of the antioxidant agent, vitamin E, to counteract these alterations was studied in male Wistar rats. Aluminum hydroxide (or saline in controls) was administered ip (27 mg/kg body weight, three times a week, for 90 d). Vitamin E (600 mg/kg body weight) was coadministered, sc. Al increased lipid peroxidation (+50%) and decreased hepatic glutation levels (-43%) and the activity of glutation peroxidase (-50%) and catalase (-88%). Vitamin E counteracted these effects total or partially. Both plasma and hepatic Al levels reached at the end of the treatment were significantly reduced by vitamin E (-40% and -44%, respectively;p< 0.05). Al increased 4 times the hepatic apoptotic index, and this effect was fully counteracted by vitamin E. Bile flow was decreased in Al-treated rats (-37%) and restored to normality by vitamin E. The antioxidant normalized the hepatic handling of the Mrp2 substrates, rose bengal, and dinitrophenyl-S-glutathione, which was causally associated with restoration of Mrp2 expression. Our data indicate that oxidative stress has a crucial role in cholestasis, apoptotic/necrotic hepatocellular damage, and the impairment in liver transport function induced by Al and that vitamin E counteracts these harmful effects not only by preventing free-radical formation but also by favoring Al disposal.  相似文献

Epidemiological studies suggest that intrauterine undernutrition plays an important role in the development of arterial hypertension and endothelial dysfunction in adulthood. We have evaluated the effect of the Renin Angiotensin System inhibition on the blood pressure and the mesenteric arteriolar reactivity of the intrauterine undernourished rats. Wistar rats were fed either normal or 50% of the normal intake diets, during the whole gestational period. In this study only the male offspring was used. At 16 weeks of age, the rats were used for the study of blood pressure, microvascular reactivity studied in vivo-in situ to Angiotensin II (Ang II), Bradykinin (Bk) and Acetylcholine (Ach) before and after either losartan (10 mg/kg/15 days) or enalapril (15 mg/kg/21 days) treatment. We also evaluated the mesenteric and plasmatic Angiotensin Converting Enzyme (ACE), renal function, lipid plasmatic content, and insulin and glucose metabolism. Intrauterine undernutrition induced hypertension and increased response of mesenteric arterioles to Ang II and decreased vasodilation to Bk and Ach. The treatments with losartan or enalapril normalized the blood pressure levels and significantly improved the arteriolar responses to Bk, Ach and reduced the response to Ang II. No differences have been detected to ACE activity, renal function, lipid content and insulin and glucose metabolism. This study shows for the first time that Renin Angiotensin System inhibitors can normalize the cardiovascular alterations induced by intrauterine undernutrition.  相似文献
