The cerebral cortex of Squamate reptiles (lizards and snakes) may be regarded as an archicortex or "reptilian hippocampus". In lizards, one cortical area, the medial cortex, may be considered as a true "fascia dentata" on grounds of its anatomy, connectivity and cyto- chemo-architectonics of its main zinc-rich axonal projection. Moreover, its late ontogenesis and postnatal development support this view. In normal conditions, it shows delayed postnatal neurogenesis and growth during the lizard's life span. Remnant neuroblasts in the medial cortical ependyma of adult lizards seasonally proliferate. The late-produced immature neurocytes migrate to the medial cortex cell layer where they differentiate and give off zinc-containing axons directed to the rest of cortical areas. This results in a continuous growth of the medial cortex and its zinc-rich axonal projection. Perhaps the most important characteristic of the lizard medial cortex is that it can regenerate after having been almost completely destroyed. Recent experiments in our laboratory have shown that chemical lesion of its neurons (up to 95%) results in a cascade of events; first, those related with massive neuronal death and axonal-dendritic retraction and, secondly, those related with a triggered neuroblast proliferation and subsequent neo-histogenesis, and the regeneration of an almost new medial cortex that shows itself undistinguishable from a normal undamaged one. This is the only report to our knowledge that an amniote central nervous centre may regenerate by new neuron production and neo-histogenesis. A number of studies have demonstrated the activation of phospholipase C-mediated hydrolysis of phosphatidylcholine (PC-PLC) both by growth factors and by the product of the ras oncogene, p21ras. Evidence has been presented indicating that the stimulation of this phospholipid degradative pathway is sufficient to activate mitogenesis in fibroblasts as well as that it is sufficient and necessary for induction of maturation in Xenopus laevis oocytes. However, the mechanism whereby PC-PLC transduces mitogenic signals triggered by growth factors or oncogenes remains to be elucidated. In this study, data are presented that show the involvement of protein kinase C zeta subspecies in the channelling of the mitogenic signal activated by insulin-p21ras-PC-PLC in Xenopus oocytes as well as the lack of a critical role of protein kinase C isotypes alpha, beta, gamma, delta, and epsilon in these pathways. 相似文献

We studied the behavior of the Poeciliid fishGambusia affinis after the introduction of 3 substances into their tank: a homogenization ofGambusia affinis, a homogenization of the Anabantid fishBetta splendens, and a blank made of distilled water. The protective effects of rufloxacin againstStaphylococcus aureus-induced infections were compared with those of ciprofloxacin in the granuloma pouch model in the rat. Two strains with different in vitro sensitivity to the drugs were studied. Rufloxacin concentrations persisted longer than ciprofloxacin in the exudate in the pouch cavity and were about eight times higher. Equal doses of rufloxacin and ciprofloxacin had similar antibacterial activities. However, rufloxacin inhibitedStaphylococcus aureus bacterial growth significantly longer than did ciprofloxacin. 相似文献

Struvite precipitation by 161 bacterial strains isolated from soil and fresh water was analyzed. The results showed that the ability to form struvite is not widespread among these bacteria. Struvite precipitation was influenced by environmental factors and could be enhanced by changing the experimental conditions. There was no clear relationship between the taxonomic status of a given strain and its ability to precipitate struvite. However, bacteria of the genusPseudomonas showed a greater tendency to precipitate struvite than organisms of the remaining genera studied, and five new genera were identified as struvite producers. 相似文献

Summary We have screened seven Spanish phenylketonuric (PKU) families for the most prevalent Mediterranean and Caucasian mutations, and have subsequently found mutations P281L and IVS10. We have analyzed these two mutations in 23 of our patients. The frequencies found correspond to those of Mediterranean countries, such as Italy. This is the first report of a mutation analysis in the Spanish PKU population. 相似文献

Synopsis Leptocephali were collected in June 1981 and July 1989 over the continental shelf and slope of the Florida west coast. Tarpon larvae ranged 5.5–24.4 mm standard length (SL) and were the second most abundant leptocephalus species. Sagittae examined with compound microscopes and scanning electron microscopy had increments that were presumed to be formed daily. Increment counts made using the two microscopic techniques were not significantly different. Estimated ages ranged 2–25 days with a growth rate (± standard error) of 0.92 ± 0.04 mm d–1 The least squares linear regression equation SL = 2.78 + 0.92 (age in days) best described the relationship between estimated age and length. Adult tarpon appear to undergo a substantial spawning migration from inshore areas frequented during spring and summer to offshore spawning grounds. The floral biology ofTetrastylis ovalis and its pollination by bats was studied in southeastern Brazil. The flowers ofT. ovalis seem more fitted to bat-pollination than those ofPassiflora mucronata, the other known chiropterophilous passionflower. Two species of bats were observed visiting flowers ofT. ovalis: the phyllostomidsGlossophaga soricina andRhinophylla pumilio. Due to the attributes ofTetrastylis, its presumed primitiveness and a better defined bat-pollination syndrome we suggest that chiropterophily evolved independently in the former genus and inPassiflora. 相似文献
