This paper provides comparative information on the reproductive biology of the alfonsino, Beryx splendens Lowe, 1834, species with commercial interest in the Azores, Madeira and the Canary Islands. A total of 846 individuals from Azores (14.0–42.0 cm fork length), 621 from Madeira (17.2–50.0 cm fork length) and 643 from the Canaries (18.2–38.9 cm fork length) were used for the study. The alfonsino is gonochoric with no evidence of sexual dimorphism. Females are more abundant than males; this dominance probably reflects certain differences in the spatial distribution and/or the catchability of males and females in the Macaronesian archipelagos. The spawning season was distinct for the three Macaronesian areas, with an observed North–South variation in the reproductive period: September–March in the Azores, March–June in Madeira and July–September in the Canary Islands. The size at sexual maturity estimated for Madeira and the Canary Islands is similar (32 and 30 cm fork length, respectively), while for the Azores it is reached at smaller length (23 cm fork length). The differences observed in the size at sexual maturity can be explained by the different exploitation levels in each archipelago. Life‐history parameters of the alfonsino suggest that this species has a specialistic life‐history strategy and fisheries based on this species are more susceptible to growth overfishing and population depletion.  相似文献

Oncoproteins of the Ras family have been extensively studied because of their implication in human cancer. Their roles have been primarily assigned to the commandment of cell proliferation and suppression of apoptosis, which has also been demonstrated by the involvement of Ras activation in the signal transduction pathways triggered by most cytokine receptors. Nevertheless, the functions of Ras proteins have been extended in the last years by the findings showing that they can also act as promoters or enhancers of apoptosis in various systems and conditions. These considerations have raised the issue as to how the signals delivered by Ras are regulated and translated in terms of cellular responses, suggesting that signal complementation may direct the final fate of cells. As an example, the interleukin-2 receptor system may represent a useful model in which the meaning of Ras signals may be evaluated in terms of interactions with other simultaneous signalling events, since knowledge of the biochemical events triggered by the interaction of interleukin-2 with its cell surface receptor in lymphocytes has allowed the proposal of a complete signalling model arranged in three independent channels, one of which is mediated by Ras.This work was supported by grants from CICYT and Pharmacia-Upjohn.  相似文献

We identified some gene linkage groups in Entamoeba histolytica using a 4-M urea improved transversal alternating field electrophoresis (TAFE) method. Complex rosette-structured DNA molecules were found trapped along the gel lanes, explaining the fuzziness of the patterns. Using several episomal probes, including 16 S, 5.8 S, and 25 S ribosomal (r)Dna genes, an autonomous replication sequence (ARS), and EhVR1, we identified a complete ribosomal episome linkage group (CELG) at the 1.2-Mb position. Three other incomplete groups were found: IELG-1, formed by EhVR1,16 S, 5.8 S, and 25 S genes; IELG-2 formed by EhVR1, 16 S and 25 S; and IELG-3 formed only by 5.8 S. Ehadh3, Ehpfo, and Ehredox genes migrated at the 1.8-Mb position, forming the non-ribosomal linkage group, NRLG-1.8, while the Ehenl-1 gene migrated at 1.6 Mb forming the NRLG-1.6 group. Ehhk was located at 1.2, 0.8, and 0.17 Mb in three different groups: NRLG-1.2, IELG-3-0.8, and NRLG-0.17. Putative lineal chromosomes were also identified using an heterologous telomeric probe. By in situ hybridization experiments, the rDNA and Ehhk genes were located in both nucleus and cytoplasm, while the Ehpfo and Ehredox genes were found mainly in the nucleus. We propose a model hypothezising that the 16 S and 25?S genes are in a linear molecule, duplicated in two inverted repeats, which may be looped out of the linear DNA to form an episome probably lacking or not the 5.8 S sequence, which could be added later by recombination.  相似文献

The major genera found in the microflora of fermented, sour, cassava-starch were Streptococcus, Bacillus, Lactobacillus and Saccharomyces with amylase activity. Lactic acid bacteria predominated whereas the presence of moulds was not significant. No coliforms were detected. Electron microscopy showed bacteria and yeasts in contact with the starch granules and signs of erosion on the granule surface. Lactic acid was the main metabolite; no oligosaccharides, maltose or glucose were detected, indicating their rapid utilization. The degree of acidification, which correlated with the decrease in viscosity and the final quality of the product, was influenced by the variable microbial ecology.  相似文献

Vast amounts of olive mill wastewaters (OMW) are produced in Mediterranean countries, where their treatment and disposal are becoming a serious environmental problem. Increasing attention has been paid to discovering a use for OMW and a wide range of technological treatments are available nowadays for reducing their pollutant effects and for their transformation into valuable products, the most suitable procedures being found to involve recycling rather than the detoxication of these wastes. Direct application of OMW to soil has been considered as an inexpensive method of disposal and recovery of their mineral and organic components but, because of their organic acid and phenol contents, OMW are also a source of pollution. By using composting technologies, it is possible to transform either fresh OMW or sludge from pond-stored OMW mixed with appropriate plant waste waterials (carriers) into organic fertilizers (composts) with no phytotoxicity to improve soil fertility and plant production, the process involving the microbial degradation of the polluting load of the wastes. Results of field and pot experiments using OMW-composts to cultivate horticultural and other crops have shown that yields obtained with organic fertilization are similar, and sometimes higher, to those obtained with a balanced mineral fertilizer. A comparison between the macro and micronutrient contents of plants cultivated with organic or mineral fertilizers did not generally reveal important differences. However, the cases of iron and manganese are worth mentioning as their bio-availability may be linked to the soil humic complexes originated by the OMW organic fertilizers.  相似文献

Summary A new application of the HMBC experiment is presented that provides a useful means to discriminate between H2 and H8 proton resonances, to assign the base proton resonances to the various residue types and, most importantly, to correlate the H2 and H8 protons for adenine or inosine residues in natural abundance 13C fragments. The utility of this experiment is demonstrated for an unlabeled DNA 20-mer. Thanks to the obtained results, preliminary conclusions could be drawn regarding the molecular conformations of the non-canonical G/I-A base pairs in the hairpin formed by this fragment.  相似文献

In mammals the photoperiodic synchronization of circadian system starts before birth. During fetal and neonatal period mothers relay the photoperiodic information to their litter. The maternal pineal melatonin 24 h cycle acts as a synchronizing signal. We have studied the effect of pineal maternal sympathetic denervation and administration of melatonin to mothers denervated during gestation on the prenatal synchronization of testicular malate dehydrogenase (MDH) activity circadian rhythm of the offspring 25 days after birth. When mothers were denervated at the 7th, 10th or 11th day of gestation, pups showed disruption of testicular MDH activity circadian rhythms. In contrast, no disruptive effect was observed when the mothers were denervated on the 12th or 14th day of gestation. When denervated mothers (7th day of gestation) were treated with a daily dose of melatonin from the 11th to the 14th day of gestation, pups showed a MDH activity circadian rhythm. The hormone failed to impose a daily phase when administered from the 9th to the 12th day of gestation. Results suggest that prenatal synchronization in the rat occurs very early in the development, before suprachiasmatic nuclei morphologic arrangement and functional activity begin.  相似文献
