A new coumarin from Ferula loscosii and the correct structure of coladonin

From the roots of Ferula loscosii the coumarins umbelliprenin, coladin and coladonin and the new natural isovaleryl derivative of the latter have been isolated. A study which confirms the structure of coladonin and its difference from farnesiferol A is also given.     

Fourth-derivative spectrophotometry of proteins

Fourth-derivative spectrophotometry offers several advantages over classical absorption or difference spectrophotometry in examining the characteristics of aromatic amino acids in proteins. The basic principles of the technique and its applications are outlined.     

Induction of the blue form of bacteriohodopsin by low concentrations of sodium dodecyl sulfate

The effects produced on bacteriorhodopsin by low concentrations of several detergents have been studied by absorption and fourth-derivative spectrophotometry. Sodium dodecyl sulfate induces the appearance of the blue form of bacteriorhodopsin (λ_max = 600 nm) at pH values up to 7.0 in a reversible manner. The apparent pK of the purple-to-blue transition raised with increasing concentration of SDS. Of the other detergents tested, only sodium dodecyl-N-sarcosinate showed a slight red-shift of the absorption band to 580 nm, whereas sodium taurocholate, Triton X-100 and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide did not favour the appearance of the blue form. The effect of SDS was found to be consistent with a localized conformational change that moves away the counter-ion of the protonated Schiff base.     

Cluster analysis of behavioural and event-related potentials during a contingent negative variation paradigm in remitting-relapsing and benign forms of multiple sclerosis

Background  

Event-related potentials (ERPs) may be used as a highly sensitive way of detecting subtle degrees of cognitive dysfunction. On the other hand, impairment of cognitive skills is increasingly recognised as a hallmark of patients suffering from multiple sclerosis (MS). We sought to determine the psychophysiological pattern of information processing among MS patients with the relapsing-remitting form of the disease and low physical disability considered as two subtypes: 'typical relapsing-remitting' (RRMS) and 'benign MS' (BMS). Furthermore, we subjected our data to a cluster analysis to determine whether MS patients and healthy controls could be differentiated in terms of their psychophysiological profile.     

Action of mercury on sugar transport across rat small intestine, in vivo

Absorption of galactose from in vivo perfused rat jejunum was inhibited by 0.1-0.5 mM Hg2+. A few minutes' delay was required for maximal inhibition values. The effects remained after saline solution washing but were in part reversed by EDTA and in higher proportion by dithioerythritol. Absorption inhibition could be ascribed to impairment of the sugar-Na phlorizin-sensitive cotransport component: The passive apparently diffusional component that remains under 0.5 mM phlorizin and absorption of L-sorbose were unaffected by the metal. Hg action is explained as due to its binding to thiol and perhaps other chemical groups of proteins, at different depths in the membrane, which are directly or indirectly related to the sugar transport system.
