The evolved functions, if any, of infant handling (IH) by female primates remain unclear for many species. I tested a new hypothesis, that IH tests social bonds between adult females, using data on a group of wild white-faced capuchins. I also tested the nonadaptive, learning-to-mother, reciprocity, harassment and alliance-formation hypotheses. Focal subjects were the mothers of 10 infants that ranged in age from 0 to 90 days. The behaviours comprising IH (inspecting, nuzzling, sniffing, and a distinctive vocalization) differed from typical maternal behaviour. Nulliparous females engaged in no more IH than did parous females. The median frequency of rough handling was zero, kidnapping was not observed, and maternal restraint of infants was extremely rare. Infant handling rate was unrelated to the relative dominance ranks of the mother and the handler. Females tended to handle the infants of females with which they groomed and formed aggressive coalitions more frequently. Dyadic IH rates were not correlated with rates of allonursing when the infants were older than 90 days of age. There was no evidence for reciprocal exchanges of IH between females. Mother-terminated IH bouts were longer when the mother had groomed the handler more frequently before the infant's birth. Based on these findings, the learning-to-mother, reciprocity and harassment hypotheses are unsupported for this species. Some support exists for the nonadaptive hypothesis. The Le Fort fracture without maxillary mobility constitutes 9 percent of maxillary fractures observed over a 3-year period. A high Le Fort (level II or III) injury exists as a one- or two-piece incomplete fracture. The degree of fracture is insufficient to permit mobility of the maxillary alveolus. Frequently, an obvious unilateral zygomatic fracture is present. Physical findings consist of bilateral eyelid ecchymosis and malocclusion. The occlusal disturbance may consist of either crossbite, open bite, maxillary rotation, or lack of proper dental intercuspation. On CT scan, fractures are best demonstrated in the posterior and medial maxillary walls at the Le Fort I level; they are most obvious unilaterally with contralateral fractures that may be subtle. Bilateral maxillary sinus fluid is consistently present on CT. Treatment usually consists of observation and traction elastics but may require mobilization of the fragments followed by open reduction and rigid fixation.  相似文献

Twelve rhesus monkeys were vaccinated with SIVmac316 delta nef (lacking nef sequences), and 12 were vaccinated with SIVmac239 delta3 (lacking nef, vpr, and upstream sequences in U3). SIVmac316 and SIVmac239 differ by only eight amino acids in the envelope; these changes render SIVmac316 highly competent for replication in macrophages. Seventeen of the animals developed persistent infections with the vaccine viruses. Seven of the 24 vaccinated animals, however, developed infections that were apparently transient in nature. Six of these seven yielded virus from peripheral blood when tested at weeks 2 and/or 3, three of the seven had transient antibody responses, but none of the seven had persisting antibody responses. The 24 monkeys were challenged in groups of four with 10 rhesus monkey infectious doses of wild-type, pathogenic SIVmac251 at weeks 8, 20, and 79 following receipt of vaccine. None of the seven with apparently transient infections with vaccine virus were protected upon subsequent challenge. Analysis of cell-associated viral loads, CD4+ cell counts, and viral gene sequences present in peripheral blood in the remainder of the monkeys following challenge allowed a number of conclusions. (i) There was a trend toward increased protection with length of time of vaccination. (ii) Solid vaccine protection was achieved by 79 weeks with the highly attenuated SIV239 delta3. (iii) Solid long-term protection was achieved in at least two animals in the absence of complete sterilizing immunity. (iv) Genetic backbone appeared to influence protective capacity; animals vaccinated with SIV239 delta3 were better protected than animals receiving SIV316 delta nef. This better protection correlated with increased levels of the replicating vaccine strain. (v) The titer of virus-neutralizing activity in serum on the day of challenge correlated with protection when measured against a primary stock of SIVmac251 but not when measured against a laboratory-passaged stock. The level of binding antibodies to whole virus by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay also correlated with protection.  相似文献

Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever (CCHF) virus is one among the major zoonosis viral diseases that use the Hyalomma ticks as their transmission vector to cause viral infection to the human and mammalian community. The fatality of infectious is high across the world especially in Africa, Asia, Middle East, and Europe. This study regarding codon usage bias of S, M, and L segments of the CCHF virus pertaining to the host Homo sapiens, reveals in-depth information about the evolutionary characteristics of CCHFV. Relative Synonymous Codon Usage (RSCU), Effective number of codons (ENC) were calculated, to determine the codon usage pattern in each segment. Correlation analysis between Codon adaptation index (CAI), GRAVY (Hydrophobicity), AROMO (Aromaticity), and nucleotide composition revealed bias in the codon usage pattern. There was no strong codon bias found among any segments of the CCHF virus, indicating both the factors i.e., natural selection and mutational pressure shapes the codon usage bias.  相似文献

The tetrasaccharides GalNAcß1-4[NeuAc2-3]Galß1-4Glc and GalNAcß1-4[NeuAc2-3]Galß1-4GlcNAc were synthesised by enzymic transfer of GalNAc from UDP-GalNAc to 3-sialyllactose (NeuAc2-3Galß1-4Glc) and 3-sialyl-N-acetyllactosamine (NeuAc2-3Galß1-4GlcNAc). The structures of the products were established by methylation and1H-500 MHz NMR spectroscopy. In Sda serological tests the product formed with 3-sialyl-N-acetyllactosamine was highly active whereas that formed with 3-sialyllactose had only weak activity.  相似文献

1. By digitonin lysis of penicillin spheroplasts of Escherichia coli a particulate fraction P1 was previously obtained that supported the sustained synthesis of alkaline phosphatase when supplied with amino acids, nucleotide triphosphates and other cofactors. This P1 fraction, when subjected to mild ultrasonic treatment in the presence of sucrose and Mg2+, yielded the P1(S) fraction, consisting of integrated particulate subcellular particles containing DNA and RNA. 2. The P1(S) fraction from E. coli K10 wild type (R+1R+2P+) grown under repressed conditions supported the immediate synthesis of alkaline phosphatase in vitro. The synthesis occurred in phases. The first was followed by a lag, and then there was a linear rapid phase that continued for at least 3hr. Actinomycin D inhibited the appearance of the second phase. It was concluded that the particles are programmed to synthesize enzyme even when prepared from repressed cells, and therefore that synthesis of the specific messenger RNA for alkaline phosphatase in vivo was not inhibited when the bacteria were grown in an excess of inorganic phosphate. 3. Phosphate inhibited synthesis of enzyme to the same extent with the P1(S) fractions of two constitutive strains as with the P1(S) fraction of the wild-type strain. 4. Inorganic phosphate inhibited amino acid incorporation with the P1(S) fraction and also inhibited enzyme synthesis in vitro. The effect on amino acid incorporation could be partially overcome by adding Mn2+ to the incubation mixtures. However, Mn2+ inhibited the synthesis of alkaline phosphatase. Also, inhibition of the incorporation of [32P]CTP into RNA was overcome by Mn2+. The effect of phosphate on amino acid uptake was most probably due to a phosphorolysis of RNA by polynucleotide phosphorylase, also present in the P1(S) fraction. This phosphorolysis may be responsible for the instability of messenger RNA in vitro and in vivo. 5. Phosphate also specifically inhibited the formation of alkaline phosphatase, since it did not affect markedly the induced formation of β-galactosidase by the same P1(S) fraction. The specific effect is attributed to the prevention of formation of the enzymically active dimer from precursors, a Zn2+-dependent reaction. It is suggested that the repression of the synthesis of alkaline phosphatase in vivo in the wild-type strain was the sum of these two effects.  相似文献

The effect of neurotensin on submaximally-stimulated hepatobiliary and pancreatic secretion was studied in 6 healthy subjects. An intravenous infusion of neurotensin 1.4 ± 0.3 pmol/kg/min, designed to reproduce plasma neurotensin immunoreactivity levels within the physiological range, produced a significant increase in pancreatic bicarbonate output. Plasma concentrations of pancreatic polypeptide rose by 83 ± 16 pmol/l and were associated with a small reduction in trypsin, but no significant change in bilirubin outputs.  相似文献
