As the ecolocation system of the vampire bats (Desmodus rotundus) is not very efficient, these animals very likely use their sense of vision for orientation over long distances. To get an impression of the environment, they must be able to distinguish different visual patterns. In this paper the ability of two vampire bats to discriminate between two simple signs (white vertical stripe vs. white circle of same area) was investigated. To determine which oriteria of the patterns are used for the discrimination these signs were altered in different respects. Of all the different criteria the animals evaluated most strongly the “vertical impression” of the vertically arranged bar. A horizontal arrangement of the bar reversed the choice: the bats selected in this case the negative circle.  相似文献

The online encyclopedia Wikipedia has become one of the most important online references in the world and has a substantial and growing scientific content. A search of Google with many RNA-related keywords identifies a Wikipedia article as the top hit. We believe that the RNA community has an important and timely opportunity to maximize the content and quality of RNA information in Wikipedia. To this end, we have formed the RNA WikiProject (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:WikiProject_RNA) as part of the larger Molecular and Cellular Biology WikiProject. We have created over 600 new Wikipedia articles describing families of noncoding RNAs based on the Rfam database, and invite the community to update, edit, and correct these articles. The Rfam database now redistributes this Wikipedia content as the primary textual annotation of its RNA families. Users can, therefore, for the first time, directly edit the content of one of the major RNA databases. We believe that this Wikipedia/Rfam link acts as a functioning model for incorporating community annotation into molecular biology databases.  相似文献

The biomass, phylogenetic composition, and photoautotrophic metabolism of green sulfur bacteria in the Black Sea was assessed in situ and in laboratory enrichments. In the center of the western basin, bacteriochlorophyll e (BChl e) was detected between depths of 90 and 120 m and reached maxima of 54 and 68 ng liter(-1). High-pressure liquid chromatography analysis revealed a dominance of farnesyl esters and the presence of four unusual geranyl ester homologs of BChl e. Only traces of BChl e (8 ng liter(-1)) were found at the northwestern slope of the Black Sea basin, where the chemocline was positioned at a significantly greater depth of 140 m. Stable carbon isotope fractionation values of farnesol indicated an autotrophic growth mode of the green sulfur bacteria. For the first time, light intensities in the Black Sea chemocline were determined employing an integrating quantum meter, which yielded maximum values between 0.0022 and 0.00075 micromol quanta m(-2) s(-1) at the top of the green sulfur bacterial layer around solar noon in December. These values represent by far the lowest values reported for any habitat of photosynthetic organisms. Only one 16S rRNA gene sequence type was detected in the chemocline using PCR primers specific for green sulfur bacteria. This previously unknown phylotype groups with the marine cluster of the Chlorobiaceae and was successfully enriched in a mineral medium containing sulfide, dithionite, and freshly prepared yeast extract. Under precisely controlled laboratory conditions, the enriched green sulfur bacterium proved to be capable of exploiting light intensities as low as 0.015 micromol quanta m(-2) s(-1) for photosynthetic 14CO2 fixation. Calculated in situ doubling times of the green sulfur bacterium range between 3.1 and 26 years depending on the season, and anoxygenic photosynthesis contributes only 0.002 to 0.01% to total sulfide oxidation in the chemocline. The stable population of green sulfur bacteria in the Black Sea chemocline thus represents the most extremely low-light-adapted and slowest-growing type of phototroph known to date.  相似文献

Induction of rat liver epithelial cell migration by epidermal growth factor (EGF) changes the expression pattern of secreted proteins. The expression of the early induced glycoprotein EGF-inducible protein No. 1 (EIP-1) correlates with the migratory behavior of both normal and Ha-ras-transformed, tumorigenic cells and is deposited into the ECM migration tracks. The sequence of two clones from a cDNA library of EGF-induced cells and the amino terminal sequence of the purified protein revealed that EIP-1 is identical to rat plasminogen activator inhibitor 1 (PAI-1). Based on the migration-linked expression pattern of EIP-1/PAI-1 it is proposed that the inhibitor is required for the migration of these cells, but not sufficient to stimulate it.  相似文献

The migration of rat liver epithelial cells induced by epidermal growth factor (EGF) was inhibited by cyclic AMP (cAMP) and cholera toxin, but not by cGMP, cAMP and cholera toxin also inhibited the expression of the EGF/transforming growth factor (TGF) alpha-inducible protein EIP-1 (Mr 47,000), but not that of other proteins induced by the growth factor. cAMP therefore specifically and selectively represses the EGF-induced expression of this protein, which by synthesis in the presence of tunicamycin and by enzymatic treatments was shown to be N-glycosylated and sialylated. The close correlation of the expression of EIP-1 with the growth factor-induced migration suggests that this glycoprotein is involved in the cellular translocation process. Modulation of cell migration and of EIP-1 expression through increased intracellular concentrations of cAMP indicate that factors operating through this signal system can modulate the phenotypic and gene expression changes mediated by the EGF-receptor. Identification of the ligand(s) that can cause the cAMP-mediated effects might be an important step towards understanding the regulation of liver cell migration in vivo.  相似文献

Chicken globin cDNA was prepared from mRNA isolated from phenylhydrazine-treated chicken reticulocytes, and cloned into the tetracycline-resistance gene of plasmid pMB9. Restriction enzyme analysis indicates that there are at least two classes of clones isolated. Nucleotide sequence data have shown that these classes corresponded to the chicken α- and β-globin genes.  相似文献
