A characteristic feature of the sperm P1 protamines of eutherian mammals is
the constant presence of six to nine cysteine residues per molecule. During
spermiogenesis these residues become oxidized to form a three-dimensional
network of disulfide bridges between, and within, protamine molecules in
the sperm chromatin. This covalent cross linking strongly stabilizes
eutherian sperm nuclei. In contrast, protamines sequenced from teleost
fish, birds, monotremes, and marsupials all lack cysteine residues and
their sperm nuclei, without the stabilizing cross links, are easily
decondensed in vitro. We have now found that one genus of tiny, shrewlike
dasyurid marsupials, the Planigales, possess P1 protamines containing five
to six cysteine residues. These residues appear to have evolved since the
divergence of Planigales from other members of the family Dasyuridae, such
as the marsupial mouse, Sminthopsis crassicaudata. We believe this
constitutes a case of convergent evolution in a subfamily of dasyurid
marsupials toward the cysteine-rich eutherian form of sperm protamine P1.

Aim The aim of this study was to explore the environmental factors that determine the spatial distribution of oro‐mediterranean and alti‐mediterranean plant communities in Crete. Location The paper provides a quantitative analysis of vegetation–environment relationships for two study areas within the Lefka Ori massif Crete, a proposed Natura 2000 site. Methods Eleven environmental variables were recorded: altitude, slope, aspect, percentage of bare rock, percentage of unvegetated ground, soil depth, pH, organic matter content and percentages of sand, silt and clay content. Classification of the vegetation was based on twinspan , while detrended correspondence analysis (DCA) and canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) were used to identify environmental gradients linked to community distribution. Results One hundred and twenty‐five species were recorded from 120 plots located within the two study areas. Forty‐seven of the recorded species are endemic, belonging to 35 families. Hemicryptophytes and chamaephytes were the most frequent, suggesting a typical oro‐mediterranean life form spectrum. The samples were classified into five main community types and one transitional. The main gradients, identified by CCA, were altitude and surface cover type in the North‐west site, while in the Central site the gradients were soil formation‐development and surface cover type. Main conclusions The use of classification in combination with ordination techniques resulted in a good discrimination between plant communities and a greater understanding of controlling environmental factors. The methodology adopted can be employed for improving baseline information on plant community ecology and distribution in Mediterranean mountain zones. 相似文献

Enhanced production of tissue factor has been linked to development of cardiovascular disease due to endothelial activation, resulting in thrombosis of blood vessels. Epidemiological studies reported that diet-derived antioxidants might suppress and/or delay progression of cardiovascular disease. Detailed molecular level studies are needed to understand this effect with prevention as a goal. Water-dispersible forms of various carotenoids (beta-carotene, lutein and lycopene) from natural sources in microemulsion were used to study effects of carotenoids on tissue factor activity in human endothelial cells. All carotenoids studied suppressed tissue factor activity (P<.01) and gene expression in human endothelial cells. Our study also demonstrated that addition of Akt-specific inhibitor reversed the inhibitory effect of carotenoids on tissue factor activity, indicating that carotenoids enhanced phosphorylation of Akt and suppressed tissue factor activity in endothelial cells by this mechanism. 相似文献

The 24 extant crocodylian species are the remnants of a once much more diverse and widespread clade. Crocodylomorpha has an approximately 230 million year evolutionary history, punctuated by a series of radiations and extinctions. However, the group's fossil record is biased. Previous studies have reconstructed temporal patterns in subsampled crocodylomorph palaeobiodiversity, but have not explicitly examined variation in spatial sampling, nor the quality of this record. We compiled a dataset of all taxonomically diagnosable non‐marine crocodylomorph species (393). Based on the number of phylogenetic characters that can be scored for all published fossils of each species, we calculated a completeness value for each taxon. Mean average species completeness (56%) is largely consistent within subgroups and for different body size classes, suggesting no significant biases across the crocodylomorph tree. In general, average completeness values are highest in the Mesozoic, with an overall trend of decreasing completeness through time. Many extant taxa are identified in the fossil record from very incomplete remains, but this might be because their provenance closely matches the species’ present‐day distribution, rather than through autapomorphies. Our understanding of nearly all crocodylomorph macroevolutionary ‘events’ is essentially driven by regional patterns, with no global sampling signal. Palaeotropical sampling is especially poor for most of the group's history. Spatiotemporal sampling bias impedes our understanding of several Mesozoic radiations, whereas molecular divergence times for Crocodylia are generally in close agreement with the fossil record. However, the latter might merely be fortuitous, i.e. divergences happened to occur during our ephemeral spatiotemporal sampling windows. 相似文献
