Male bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops sp.) in Shark Bay have one of the most complex male societies outside humans. Two broad mating strategies have been identified in males. In the first strategy, there are two types of alliances: stable 'first-order' pairs and trios that herd individual females in reproductive condition, and 'second-order' teams of two first-order alliances (five or six individuals) that join forces against rivals in contests for females. In the alternative strategy, a 'super-alliance' of ca. 14 individuals, males form pairs or trios to herd females, but in contrast to the stable alliances, these pairs and trios are highly labile. Here, we show that males in stable first-order alliances and the derived second-order alliances are often strongly related, so that they may gain inclusive fitness benefits from alliance membership. By contrast, members of the super-alliance are no more closely related than expected by chance. Further, the strength of the association of alliance partners within the super-alliance, as measured by an index of joint participation in consorting a female, was not correlated with their genetic relatedness. Thus, within one population and one sex, it appears that there may be simultaneous operation of more than one mode of group formation.  相似文献

The efficiency of pike removal from a chalkstream trout fishery, by an angling society using electrofishing, was estimated over five successive autumns using mark-recapture methods. It averaged c . 50% for pike aged 1+ years or more. Numbers of 3+ and older pike decreased from 3.7 ha-1 (1980) to 1.4 ha-1 (1984), but there was no corresponding reduction in recruitment success. Both pike immigration and an inverse relationship between natural and fishing mortality could have reduced the effect of the pike culls. The mean weight of 0+ pike increased from 19.4 g to 48.2 g over the 5 years, but there was no change in the growth rates of older pike. Only the larger pike were able to eat the larger trout stocked, and the reduction in numbers of 3 + and older pike appears to have reduced the predation pressure on the trout population. Angling effort increased more than three-fold over the 5 years studied and rod-catches more than doubled, but catch-per-unit-effort was extremely variable between years. The increased rod catch occurred despite the decrease in numbers of large (> 33 cm) trout stocked in the spring and early summer. Compared with pre-cull years, the angling society saved about ş850 (present day prices) by stocking fewer trout.  相似文献

The attachment of high multiplicities of Sindbis virus to tissue-cultured cells followed by brief treatment at low pH has been shown to produce cell fusion (fusion from without). In this report, experiments to determine the effects of low pH on the physical and biological properties of Sindbis virus are described. Exposure of purified Sindbis virions to mildly acidic conditions resulted in a rapid and irreversible alteration in particle density and sedimentation characteristics, followed by a slower loss of infectivity. Infectivity was not restored by a return to neutral pH; rather, the loss of virus infectivity seemed to be initiated by exposure to low pH but continued at neutral pH. The formation of a virus-cell complex in which virions were attached to the cell surface protected the particles from low-pH inactivation, although low pH could still expose virus functions responsible for cell fusion. Low pH was found to induce a conformational change in the E2 polypeptide of the intact virion. These results are discussed with respect to the process of Sindbis virus infection of tissue-cultured cells.  相似文献

The concept of "stimulus-secretion coupling" suggested by Douglas and co-workers to explain the events related to monamine discharge by the adrenal medulla (5, 7) may be applied to other endocrine tissues, such as adrenal cortex (36), pancreatic islets (4), and magnocellular hypothalamic neurons (6), which exhibit a similar ion-dependent process of hormone elaboration. In addition, they share another feature, that of joining neighbor cells via membrane junctions (12, 26, and Fletcher, unpublished observation). Given this, and the reports that hormone secretion by the pars distalis also involves a secretagogue-induced decrease in membrane bioelectric potential accompanied by a rise in cellular [Ca++] (27, 34, 41), it was appropriate to test the possibility that cells of the anterior pituitary gland are united by junctions.  相似文献

A dextranase (EC 3.2.1.11) was purified and characterized from the IP-29 strain of Sporothrix schenckii, a dimorphic pathogenic fungus. Growing cells secreted the enzyme into a standard culture medium (20 °C) that supports the mycelial phase. Soluble bacterial dextrans substituted for glucose as substrate with a small decrease in cellular yield but a tenfold increase in the production of dextranase. This enzyme is a monomeric protein with a molecular mass of 79 kDa, a pH optimum of 5.0, and an action pattern against a soluble 170-kDa bacterial dextran that leads to a final mixture of glucose (38%), isomaltose (38%), and branched oligosaccharides (24%). In the presence of 200 mM sodium acetate buffer (pH 5.0), the K m for soluble dextran was 0.067 ± 0.003% (w/v). Salts of Hg2+, (UO2)2+, Pb2+, Cu2+, and Zn2+ inhibited by affecting both V max and K m. The enzyme was most stable between pH values of 4.50 and 4.75, where the half-life at 55 °C was 18 min and the energy of activation for heat denaturation was 99 kcal/mol. S. schenckii dextranase catalyzed the degradation of cross-linked dextran chains in Sephadex G-50 to G-200, and the latter was a good substrate for cell growth at 20 °C. Highly cross-linked grades (i.e., G-10 and G-25) were refractory to hydrolysis. Most strains of S. schenckii from Europe and North America tested positive for dextranase when grown at 20 °C. All of these isolates grew on glucose at 35 °C, a condition that is typically associated with the yeast phase, but they did not express dextranase and were incapable of using dextran as a carbon source at the higher temperature. The matrilins form a four-member family of modular, multisubunit matrix proteins, which are expressed in cartilage but also in many other forms of extracellular matrix. They participate in the formation of fibrillar or filamentous structures and are often associated with collagens. It appears that they mediate interactions between collagen-containing fibrils and other matrix constituents, such as aggrecan. This adaptor function may be modulated by physiological proteolysis that causes the loss of single subunits and thereby a decrease in binding avidity. Attempts to study matrilin function by gene inactivation in mouse have been frustrating and so far not yielded pronounced phenotypes, presumably because of the extensive redundancy within the family allowing compensation by one family member for another. However, mutations in matrilin-3 in humans cause different forms of chondrodysplasias and perhaps also hand osteoarthritis. As loss of matrilin-3 is not critical in mouse, these phenotypes are likely to be caused by dominant negative effects.  相似文献

Aseptic loosening of cemented tibial components in total knee arthroplasty (TKA) has been related to inadequate cement penetration into the trabecular bone bed during implantation. Recent postmortem retrieval work has also shown there is loss of interlock between cement and bone by resorption of trabeculae at the interface. The goal of this study was to determine if TKAs with more initial interlock between cement and bone would maintain more interlock with in vivo service (in the face of resorbing trabeculae) and have less micro-motion at the cement–bone interface. The initial (created at surgery) and current (after in vivo service) cement–bone interlock morphologies of sagittal implant sections from postmortem retrieved tibial tray constructs were measured. The implant sections were then functionally loaded in compression and the micro-motion across the cement–bone interface was quantified. Implant sections with less initial interdigitation between cement and bone and more time in service had less current cement–bone interdigitation (r2=0.86, p=0.0002). Implant sections with greater initial interdigitation also had less micro-motion after in vivo service (r2=0.36, p=0.0062). This work provides direct evidence that greater initial interlock between cement and bone in tibial components of TKA results in more stable constructs with less micro-motion with in vivo service.  相似文献
