Abstract This study assessed the natural killer (NK) cell activity profile during Plasmodium cynomologi infection in rhesus monkeys. There was a significant decrease in the NK cell activity in the peripheral blood leukocytes of infected monkeys during the early, asending phase of infection. However, as the parasite load decreased, NK cell activity returned to normal levels. This could be correlated with the peak increase in lymphocyte counts. This indicated that a decrease in NK cell activity observed at an earlier stage during an active P. vivax malarial infection was a temporary phenomenon.  相似文献

Many farmer-popular indica rice (Oryza sativa L.) cultivars are recalcitrant to Agrobacterium-mediated transformation through tissue culture and regeneration. In planta transformation using Agrobacterium could therefore be a useful alternative for indica rice. A simple and reproducible in planta protocol with higher transformation efficiencies than earlier reports was established for a recalcitrant indica rice genotype. Agrobacterium tumefaciens containing the salt tolerance-enhancing Pea DNA Helicase45 (PDH45) gene, with the reporter and selectable marker genes, gus-INT (β-glucuronidase with intron) and hygromycin phosphotransferase (hpt), respectively, were used. Overnight-soaked mature embryos were infected and allowed to germinate, flower, and set T1 seeds. T0 plants were considered positive for the transgene if the spikelets of one or more of their panicles were positive for gus. Thereafter, selection at T1 was done by germination in hygromycin and transgenic status re-confirmation by subjecting plantlet DNA/RNA to gene-specific PCR, Southern and semi-quantitative RT-PCR. Additionally, physiological screening under saline stress was done at the T2 generation. Transformation efficiency was found to be 30–32% at the T0 generation. Two lines of the in planta transformed seedlings of the recalcitrant rice genotype were shown to be saline tolerant having lower electrolyte leakage, lower Na+/K+, minimal leaf damage, and higher chlorophyll content under stress, compared to the WT at the T2 generation.  相似文献

Uranium contamination in groundwater at Balod district of Chhattisgarh state was measured by laser fluorimetric technique. Most of the samples were found under safe limit for uranium contamination as recommended by WHO and USEPA (<30 µg l?1) except Deur Tarai village (78.93 µg l?1).The excess lifetime carcinogenic risk and chemical risk due to ingestion of groundwater were calculated using USEPA recommendations.  相似文献

Revegetation with metal tolerant plants for management of fly ash deposits is an important environmental perspective nowadays. Growth performance, photosynthesis, and antioxidant defense of lemongrass (Cymbopogon citratus (D.C.) Stapf.) were evaluated under various combination of fly ash amended with garden soil in order to assess its fly ash tolerance potential. Under low level of fly ash (25%) amended soil, the plant growth parameters such as shoot, root, and total plant biomass as well as metal tolerance index were increased compared to the control plants grown on garden soil, followed by decline under higher concentration of fly ash (50%, 75% and 100%). In addition, leaf photosynthetic rate, stomatal conductance, and photosystem (PS) II activity were not significantly changed under low level of fly ash (25%) amended soil compared to the garden soil but these parameters were significantly decreased further with increase of fly ash concentrations. Furthermore, increase of activities of some antioxidant enzymes such as superoxide dismutase, ascorbate peroxidase, and guaiacol peroxidase over control were noticed in lemongrass under all fly ash treatments. Taken together, the study suggests that lemongrass can be used for phytoremediation of fly ash at 25% amended soil.  相似文献

The PsbM (3.9 kDa) and PsbY (4.2 kDa) proteins are membrane-spanning, single-helix, subunits associated with the chlorophyll-binding CP47 pre-complex of photosystem II (PSII). Removal of PsbM resulted in accumulation of PSII pre-assembly complexes and impaired electron transfer between the primary (QA) and secondary (QB) plastoquinone electron acceptors of PSII indicating that the QB-binding site and bicarbonate binding to the non-heme iron were altered in this strain. Removal of PsbY alone had only a minor impact on PSII activity but deleting PsbY in the ΔPsbM background led to additional modification of the acceptor side resulting in ΔPsbM:ΔPsbY cells being susceptible to photodamage and this required protein synthesis for recovery. Addition of bicarbonate was able to compensate for the light-induced damage in ΔPsbM:ΔPsbY cells potentially re-occupying the modified bicarbonate-binding site in the ΔPsbM:ΔPsbY strain and complementation of ΔPsbM:ΔPsbY cells with the psbY gene restored the ΔPsbM phenotype.  相似文献

Tuberculosis (TB) is a disease of global importance. There is an increasing recognition of the role of Toll like receptors, important pattern recognition receptors of host immune system, in determining the susceptibility or resistance to TB in various populations. In an attempt to examine the importance of Toll like receptors in immune response to Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection, we explored two variants each of TLR2 and TLR9 in a population residing in Uttar Pradesh, India. Genotyping was performed to detect -196 to -174 del polymorphism and G2258A SNP (Arg753Gln, rs5743708) in TLR2 gene and -T1237C (rs5743836) and G2848A (rs352140) SNP in TLR9 gene in patients with pulmonary TB and healthy controls. The A allele of G2848A SNP in TLR9 gene was found with a marginally higher frequency among TB patients as compared to healthy controls, suggesting that A allele at position 2848 of TLR9 gene may be associated with susceptibility to TB in North Indian population [p?=?0.05, Mantel–Haenszel OR?=?1.34, 95% CI (1.0–1.82)].  相似文献

Bacterial extracellular polymeric substances, which are basically bacterial metabolites, have currently become a subject of great concern of modern day microbiologists and biotechnologists. Among these metabolites, bacterial exopolysaccharides or EPS, in particular, have gained a significant importance. EPS are formed by the bacteria in their late exponential or stationary phase of growth under special situations for specific purposes. They take part in the formation of bacterial biofilms. There is a great diversity in the types of EPS. Strikingly enough, a same species of bacterium can produce different types of EPS under different situations. The importance of EPS is largely because of their different applications in various industries. Now that the bacterial EPS has got the potentiality to become an upcoming tool in various futuristic applications of human benefit, the focus currently develops towards how better they can be produced in the laboratory by promoting the favorable factors for their production. While studying with different EPS forming bacteria, both the intrinsic factors like genetic configuration of the bacteria and the extrinsic factors like culture conditions under the influence of different physico-chemical parameters in order to maximize the EPS production have been taken into consideration. Both the factors have proved their worth. Hence, towards a better outcome for EPS production, it is indicated that a genetic manipulation of the bacteria should be synchronized with a proper selection of its culture condition by controlling different physico-chemical parameters.

Length‐weight relationships (LWRs) and length‐length relationships (LLRs) for three small indigenous fishes (Esomus danrica, Pachypterus atherinoides and Salmostoma bacaila) were reported from the Payra River, southern Bangladesh. Samples were collected using traditional fishing gear including cast net (mesh size ranges from 1.0 to 2.0 cm), seine net (mesh size ranges from 1.5 to 2.5 cm) and square lift net (mesh size ~ 1.0 cm) in August to September 2017. Allometric coefficient (b) values were 2.66 for E. danrica, 3.08 for Patherinoides and 3.06 for S. bacaila. The LLRs were also highly significant with r2 ≥ .956.  相似文献

Avian influenza is a major animal and public health concern in Bangladesh. A decade after development and implementation of the first national avian influenza and human pandemic influenza preparedness and response plan in Bangladesh, a two-stage qualitative stakeholder analysis was performed in relation to the policy development process and the actual policy. This study specifically aimed to identify the future policy options to prevent and control avian influenza and other poultry-related zoonotic diseases in Bangladesh. It was recommended that the policy should be based on the One Health concept, be evidence-based, sustainable, reviewed and updated as necessary. The future policy environment that is suitable for developing and implementing these policies should take into account the following points: the need to formally engage multiple sectors, the need for clear and acceptable leadership, roles and responsibilities and the need for a common pool of resources and provision for transferring resources. Most of these recommendations are directed towards the Government of Bangladesh. However, other sectors, including research and poultry production stakeholders, also have a major role to play to inform policy making and actively participate in the multi-sectoral approach.  相似文献
