Social contact patterns among individuals encode the transmission route of infectious diseases and are a key ingredient in the realistic characterization and modeling of epidemics. Unfortunately, the gathering of high quality experimental data on contact patterns in human populations is a very difficult task even at the coarse level of mixing patterns among age groups. Here we propose an alternative route to the estimation of mixing patterns that relies on the construction of virtual populations parametrized with highly detailed census and demographic data. We present the modeling of the population of 26 European countries and the generation of the corresponding synthetic contact matrices among the population age groups. The method is validated by a detailed comparison with the matrices obtained in six European countries by the most extensive survey study on mixing patterns. The methodology presented here allows a large scale comparison of mixing patterns in Europe, highlighting general common features as well as country-specific differences. We find clear relations between epidemiologically relevant quantities (reproduction number and attack rate) and socio-demographic characteristics of the populations, such as the average age of the population and the duration of primary school cycle. This study provides a numerical approach for the generation of human mixing patterns that can be used to improve the accuracy of mathematical models in the absence of specific experimental data. 相似文献

Acetylcholine receptor-(AcChR) specific T cell lines were propagated from the PBL of six myasthenia gravis (MG) patients by the use of a pool of synthetic peptides (alpha-pool) corresponding to the complete sequence of the alpha-subunit of the human AcChR. All the lines had CD4+ phenotype and strongly recognized the alpha-pool. Four lines cross-reacted with native Torpedo AcChR. Five lines showed, at certain stages of their propagation, some degree of reactivity to autologous or DR-matched APC. One of the CD4+ T lines was challenged with each one of the peptides present in the alpha-pool. Several peptides, corresponding to the sequence segments 48-67, 101-120, 304-322, 320-337, and 419-437 of the human alpha-subunit were recognized, indicating that different epitopes and multiple T cell clones are involved in the recognition of the autoantigen in MG. Human AcChR-specific CD4+ T cell lines will be useful to identify the repertoire of epitopes recognized by the autoreactive Th cells in MG, to investigate the TCR genes utilized by autoreactive Th cells and to develop specific immunosuppressive treatments using anti-T cell vaccination. 相似文献

Aprocta matronensis (Nematoda, Spirurida) has been found in the orbital cavities of carrion crows. Hooded crows and crows from the hybrid crow zone in the studied areas were not infected. The parasite population showed the typical morphology described for this species. This is the first record of A. matronensis in crows in Italy and in Corvus corone corone. Drug delivery through the vagina is a novel and effective approach for treating embryonic diseases. Magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) currently are used as drug delivery systems. The safety of MNPs for use with embryonic tissues remains unclear. We used pregnant mice to investigate the possible toxicity of MNPs toward neonatal liver at three embryonic ages using histochemical and immunohistochemical techniques. MNPs were instilled through the vaginas of pregnant mice at days 12 (E12), 15 (E15) and 17 (E17) after fertilization. We found MNPs in the neonatal liver parenchyma after delivery of the pups on day 20. We observed that MNPs caused mild apoptosis of hepatocytes, cytoplasmic vacuolation and lymphocytic infiltration in the neonatal liver after treatment at E15 compared to instillation at E12 and E17. We observed also that MNPs increased the production of caspase proteins and tumor necrosis factor receptor 2 proteins, which are indicators of apoptosis, in the neonatal liver after instillation of MNPs at E15 compared to instillation at E12 and E17. MNPs also increased the number of collagen fibers and the amounts of connective tissue growth factors in the neonatal liver parenchyma after instillation at E15 compared to instillation at E12 and E17. The general carbohydrates in the neonatal liver were decreased in a time-dependent manner after instillation at E17, E15 and E12 owing to the presence of MNPs in the parenchyma.
