Coprological examination of 15 Indian peacocks, Pavo cristatus, revealed the presence of a coccidium species of the genus Eimeria, which apparently represents a previously undescribed species. Sporulation is exogenous and fully developed oocysts of Eimeria pavoaegyptica sp. nov. are ellipsoidal, with a dimension of 15 (13-16) × 12 (10-12.9) microm and with a shape index of 1.25 (1-1.3). The sporulated oocysts have no micropyle but enclose one large rectangular-shaped polar granule and an oocyst residuum. The oocysts have a distinct two-layered wall, which is ~approximately1.7 microm thick. The outer layer has a smooth texture; it fills ~? of the total thickness and appears bicolored. The sporocysts are boat-shaped, of about 10 (9-11) × 4 (4-4.7) microm; their average shape-index is 2.5 microm with a small pointed Stieda body and a smooth, thin single-layered wall. No substieda body is detected. The sporocysts contain numerous, nearly uniform granular residua. The sporozoites are banana-shaped, 6 × 3 microm and each has two different-sized refractile bodies.  相似文献

The changes in the fresh biomass accumulation, photosynthetic and anthocyanin pigments, photosystem 2 (PS 2) activity, ultrastructure of chloroplast, total lipids and fatty acid composition of thylakoid membrane were followed in the aquatic fern Azolla caroliniana grown on medium either deficient or supplied with various phosphorus concentrations. The content of photosynthetic pigments and the anthocyanin/chlorophyll ratio increased significantly with increasing PO4 3− concentration. Phosphate deficiency inhibited growth and PS 2 activity and decreased content of total lipids and phospholipids in isolated thylakoids. This was accompanied with a significant increase in the percentage of galalactolipids.  相似文献

From ‘cryptic species’ to integrative taxonomy: an iterative process involving DNA sequences, morphology, and behaviour leads to the resurrection of Sepsis pyrrhosoma (Sepsidae: Diptera). —Zoologica Scripta, 39, 51–61. The increased availability of DNA sequences has led to a surge of ‘cryptic species’ in the literature. These units are usually proposed based on finding genetically distinct lineages within species that were initially defined based on morphological characters. However, few authors attempt to confirm whether these ‘cryptic’ units are species and even fewer authors are explicit about which species concept is applied. Here, we use an example from Sepsidae (Diptera) to demonstrate how cryptic species can be validated by an iterative process involving several data sources and an evaluation of the data under different species concepts. A phylogeographic analysis based on 50 specimens for five species of the flavimana group revealed deep mitochondrial splits within Sepsis flavimana which was suggestive of a cryptic species. We resolve the initial conflict between DNA sequences and morphology by adding new morphological data as well as behavioural evidence and tests for reproductive isolation. One cryptic species is confirmed and Sepsis pyrrhosoma, a former synonym of S. flavimana, is here shown to be a valid species under most species concepts. We can thus document that the same data can lead to similar conclusions under conflicting concepts once different kinds of data are integrated.  相似文献

Spinosad is a bioinsecticide with a high degree of selective toxicity towards insects of different orders, but its toxicity towards the two-spotted spider mite (TSSM), Tetranychus urticae Koch (Acari: Tetranychidae) is under debate. In this study, we compared the acaricidal properties of spinosad with the commercial bioacaricide abamectin on the life stages of TSSM. Adulticide and ovicide bioassays were performed on a susceptible laboratory strain using direct spraying of leaf disks with five rates of spinosad (20, 25, 30, 35 and 40 mg/l), five rates of abamectin (0.125, 0.25, 0.5, 1 and 2.5 mg/l), sublethal concentrations or a combination of spinosad and abamectin. Both adulticidal and ovicidal effects of spinosad against T. urticae in the laboratory were apparent, based on morality rates of the adults, reduction of female fecundity and death of offspring. Abamectin was also found to significantly reduce female fecundity and killed offspring when applied directly on the eggs. Interestingly, sublethal concentrations of spinosad reduced female fecundity stronger than abamectin. When a mixture of spinosad and abamectin was applied at LC50, mortality was 74%, fecundity reduction was comparable to abamectin alone and egg hatching rate was lower than by either compound alone. In conclusion, spinosad was more harmful than abamectin for TSSM life stages and the combined application is recommended.  相似文献

The changes in plant growth, relative water content (RWC), stomatal conductance, lipid peroxidation and antioxidant system in relation to the tolerance to salt stress were investigated in salt-tolerant Plantago maritima and salt-sensitive Plantago media. The 60 days old P. maritima and P. media seedlings were subjected to 0, 100 and 200 mM NaCl for 7 days. Reduction in shoot length was higher in P. media than in P. maritima after exposure to 200 mM NaCl, but 100 mM NaCl treatment did not show any effect on shoot length of P. maritima. Shoot dry weight decreased in P. media and did not change in P. maritima. Two hundred millimolar NaCl treatment had no effect on leaf RWC in P. maritima, but it was reduced in P. media. Salt stress caused reduction in stomatal conductance being more pronounced in P. media than in P. maritima. Activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD; EC 1.15.1.1), catalase (CAT; EC 1.11.1.6), glutathione reductase (GR; EC 1.6.4.2) decreased in P. media with increasing salinity. Ascorbate peroxidase (APX; EC 1.11.1.11) activity in leaves of P. media was increased and showed no change under 100 and 200 mM NaCl, respectively. However, activities of CAT, APX and GR increased under 200 mM NaCl while their activities did not change under 100 mM NaCl in P. maritima. SOD activity in leaves of P. maritima increased with increasing salinity. Concomitant with this, four SOD activity bands were identified in leaves of P. maritima, two bands only were observed in P. media. Peroxidase (POX; EC 1.11.1.7) activity increased under both salt concentrations in P. maritima, but only under 200 mM NaCl in P. media. Confirming this, five POX activity bands were identified in leaves of P. maritima, but only two bands were determined in P. media. Malondialdehyde levels in the leaves increased under salt stress in P. media but showed no change and decreased in P. maritima at 100 and 200 mM NaCl, respectively. These results suggest that the salt-tolerant P. maritima showed a better protection mechanism against oxidative damage caused by salt stress by its higher induced activities of antioxidant enzymes than the salt-sensitive P. media.  相似文献
