Livestock depredation by leopards is one of the key conservation issues in landscapes with limited resources worldwide. Any attempts to mitigate human–leopard conflict and conserve the species in conflict should be based on an unequivocal understanding of the conflict patterns. A household survey was conducted with an intention to quantify livestock losses resulting from depredation by leopards in and around the Machiara National Park, Azad Jammu and Kashmir, Pakistan. A total of 301 livestock were killed between June 2007 and August 2008 by leopards. The extent of loss varied in different months, with maximum killing occurring in the month of May. Small-bodied livestock such as goats and sheep were more vulnerable than large-bodied cattle. Goats were killed in significantly higher numbers as compared to other livestock. Domestic animals were killed more frequently at night as compared to other times of the day. There was a significant effect of the nighttime protection measures on depredation. Most attacks happened in valleys and in areas far from the forests. Factors most closely associated with livestock depredation included decline of natural prey, herding practices, guarding especially during the nighttime, and repeated use of pastures where predators were known to be hunting actively. Attitudes of the local community towards leopards were largely negative, and further efforts should be made to improve support for carnivore conservation. AIMS: To describe the extent of faecal pollution and point of use water treatment strategy during and after the 2004 flood in Dhaka. METHODS: A total of 300 water samples were collected from 20 different drinking water sources in Kamalapur, Dhaka city from August 2004 to January 2005. The level of faecal contamination was estimated using measurements of faecal indicator bacteria (total coliforms, faecal coliforms and faecal streptococci) and isolation of Vibrio cholerae was carried out following standard procedures. Total dissolved solids, dissolved oxygen, hardness, chloride and pH were also monitored. The efficacy of four disinfectants including Halotab, Zeoline-200, alum potash and bleaching powder were tested as point of use water treatment agents. The unacceptable level of contamination of total coliforms (TC), faecal coliforms (FC) and faecal streptococci (FS) ranged from 23.8% to 95.2%, 28.6% to 95.2% and 33.3% to 90.0%, respectively. The isolation rates of V. cholerae O1 and O139 were both 0.33%, and non-O1/non-O139 was 7.0%. CONCLUSION: Water collected during and after floods was contaminated with TC, FC, FS and V. cholerae. Although alum potash, bleaching powder, Halotab and Zeoline-200 were all effective general disinfectants, Halotab and Zeoline-200 were superior to bleaching powder and alum potash against FC. Various national surveys suggest that the % of eligible couples in Bangladesh who are using traditional methods of contraception has been growing. This article presents detailed information on knowledge and use patterns of traditional methods and compares the use patterns of traditional and modern methods of contraception. The data are derived from the 1981 Contraceptive Prevalence Survey and information collected from a nationally representative sample of ever married women aged under 50, by way of field interviews using female interviewers. Quality of data was checked at different phases of the survey. Over 96% of the women reported that they knew at least 1 traditional method of contraception. The safe period was the most well known method (36.5%); about 30% reported knowledge of abstinence and 22% knew about withdrawal. Compared with modern methods, where knowledge declined with increased age, the knowledge of traditional methods shows no systematic pattern by age. Respondents with primary and higher education have higher knowledge of traditional methods than women who have never been to school. A similar pattern exists for employment status; non-Muslim women have consistently higher levels of knowledge than Muslim women. Data on patterns of use suggest that about 36% have used at least 1 contraceptive method, 15% having used traditional methods and 20.4% modern methods. The number of women who have used traditional methods increases from ages 20 to 44 and then declines. Use of traditional methods is relatively higher by the number of living children than by the number of children ever born. A similar pattern of association between background characteristics (education, employment and religion) and contraceptive knowledge is evident regarding level of use. Husband's level of education does not show any significant relationship with the use of traditional methods. The use rate of traditional methods was more than doubled among the women owning land compared to those having no land. The total current use rate of modern methods was higher among women aged 40-44 having relatively higher numbers of living children. As with current use, a positive relationship was observed between the socioeconomic variables and ever use. In general, it is concluded that socioeconomic variables played a dominant role in the decision of couples in choosing various methods of contraception. Background:Myocardial infarction is one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Oxidative stress plays a vital role in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis leading to myocardial infarction and Glutathione S-transferases (GSTs) act as detoxifying enzymes to reduce oxidative stress. The aim of the present study was to investigate the associations of the GST (T1 & M1) gene polymorphism with the susceptibility of myocardial infarction in the Bangladeshi population.Methods:A case-control study on 100 cardiac patients with MI and 150 control subjects was conducted. The genotyping of GST (T1 & M1) gene was done using conventional Polymerase Chain Reaction.Results:The percentage of GSTM1 genotypes was significantly (p< 0.01) lower in patients compared to control subjects while the GSTT1 genotypes were not significantly different between the study subjects. The individual with GSTM1 null allele was at 2.5-fold increased risk {odds ratio (OR)= 2.5; 95 % confidence interval (95 % CI)= 1.4 to 4.3; p< 0.01} of experiencing MI while individual with either GSTM1 or GSTT1 genotypes was at lower risk. In the case of GST M1 and GST T1 combined genotype, patients having both null genotypes for GST M1 and GST T1 gene showed significantly (p< 0.01) higher risk of experiencing MI when compared to control subjects (OR= 3.5; 95% CI= 1.7–7.2; p< 0.001). Conclusion:Thus our recent study suggested that GSTM1 alone and GSTM1 and T1 in combination augments the risk of MI in Bangladeshi population. Human interleukin-1 beta (rhuIL-1 beta), obtained by DNA recombinant technology, was radiolabelled. Its isoelectric properties were determined by various analytical techniques such as high-voltage ultrathin layer isoelectric focusing (IEF) and chromatofocusing. The rhuIL-1 beta molecule had a molecular mass of 18 kDa, as determined by sodium dodecyl sulphate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. When examined by IEF on a polyacrylamide gel of 1 mm thickness in the pH range of 3.5-9.5, it was resolved into two broad bands appearing in the pH range of 6.2-5.8 and 5.5-5.2. Each of the two bands was further resolved into multiple bands when electrofocused on (i) a thinner gel of 0.5 mm thickness and (ii) a narrower pH range of 5-8. Upon chromatofocusing in a liquid column, it was possible to isolate various charged components of rhuIL-1 beta. However, all these components reacted to the antiserum to rhuIL-1 beta and displayed a molecular mass of 18 kDa suggesting the charge heterogeneity of rhuIL-1 beta. 相似文献

Five tube-wells in Matlab, Bangladesh, were selected for analysis of selected biophysicochemical parameters. The results showed that all tube-well water samples contained zooplankton and bacteria. Results for some of the parameters were outside the accepted limits recommended by the World Health Organization for drinking water. It has proposed that hexokinase bound to mitochondria occupies a preferred site to wich ATP from oxidative phosphorylation is channeled directly (Bessman, S. (1966) Am. J. Medicine 40, 740–749). We have investigated this problem in isolated Zajdela hepatoma mitochondria. Addition of ADP to well-coupled mitochondria in the presence of an oxidizable substrate initiates the synthesis of glucose 6-phosphate via bound hexokinase. This reaction is only partially inhibited by oligomycin, carboxyatractyloside, carbonyl cyanide m-chlorophenylhydrazone (CCCP) ot any combination of these, suggesting a source of ATP in addition to oxidative phosphorylation. This source appears to be adenylate kinase, since Ado2P5, an inhibitor of the enzyme, suppresses hexokinase activity by about 50% when added alone or suppresses activity completely when added together with any of the inhibitors of oxidative phosphorylation. Ado2P5 does not uncouple oxidative phosphorylation nor does it inhibit ADP transport (state 3 respiration) or hexokinase. The relative amount of ATP contributed by adenylate kinase is dependent upon the ADP concentration. At low ADP concentraions, glucose phosphorylation is supported by oxidative phosphorylation, but as the adenine nucleotide translocator becomes saturated the ATP contributed by adenylate kinase increases due to the higher apparent Km of the enzyme. Under conditions of our standard experiment ([ADP] = 0.5 mM), adenylate kinase provides about 50% of the ATP used by hexokinase in well-coupled mitochondria. In spite of this, externally added ATP supported higher rates of hexokinase activity than ADP. Our findings demonstrate that oxidative phosphorylation is not a specific or preferential source of ATP for hexokinase bound to hepatoma mitochondria. The apparent lack of a channeling mechanism for ATP to hexokinase in these mitochondria is discussed. 相似文献
