Accounts of mimetic relationships reflect the traditional enthusiasm with which protective adaptations are described. However, our understanding of mimicry remains largely untested. Recent reviews of mimicry embrace many diverse phenomena, from tactics for defence and foraging, to pollination and mating. Selection for these mimetic phenomena is very different in each case and it is important to distinguish among categories of trophic, interspecific mimicry and sexually selected, nontrophic, intraspecific mimicry. Once categories are distinguished, the diversity of selection should clarify misunderstood concepts, such as the 'Batesian-Mallerian mimicry spectrum'. Experimental evidence of the selective value of mimicry is needed so that the advantages to mimics are clear when mimetic prey are confronted with real predator diversity. Such evidence should clarify the debate on how aposematism and mimicry evolve. 相似文献

In the search for candidate genes for the tuberous sclerosis (TSC1) disease locus on chromosome 9q34, we have isolated an overlapping series of 22 plasmid and phage cDNA clones covering nearly 7 kb and with an open reading frame of 5070 bp encoding a protein of 1690 amino acids. The putative protein product is a member of the kinesin superfamily and is homologous to the mouse KIF1A and theCaenorhabditas elegansunc-104 genes. Both KIF1A and unc-104 function in the anterograde axonal transport of synaptic vesicles. The human homolog is therefore termed H-ATSV (axonal transporter of synaptic vesicles, HGMW-approved nomenclature ATSV) Screening of DNA from 107 tuberous sclerosis patients and 80 unaffected individuals with H-ATSV cDNA probes by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis/Southern blotting following digestion by rare-cutting methylation-sensitive restriction enzymes showed variant banding patterns in three patients with tuberous sclerosis. However, further analysis indicated that these variant fragments represent a rare polymorphism probably associated with methylation of clustered restriction sites. In common with other Apicomplexan parasites, Plasmodium falciparum carries two extrachromosomal DNAs, one of which, the 6 kb element, is undoubtedly mitochondrial. The second, generally referred to as the 35 kb circle, is of unknown provenance, but the nature and organization of its genetic content makes a mitochondrial association unlikely and the molecule has features reminiscent of plastid genomes. We now report the occurrence on the circle of an open reading frame specifying a predicted 470 amino acid protein that shares more than 50% identity with a gene currently known only on the plastome of red algae. This high degree of conservation confirms the 35 kb circle's plastid ancestry, and we speculate that it may have originated from the rhodoplast of an ancient red algal endosymbiont in the progenitor of the Apicomplexa. 相似文献

Heliocopris dilloni is the largest dung-beetle found in the Tsavo National Park, Kenya, which during the biannual rainy seasons comprises the most important agency of elephant dung removal. The species is shown to exhibit considerable morphological variation. The mode of construction of the brood chamber is described together with details of development from egg to pupa. It is suggested that the depth to which these beetles burrow is related to avoiding the extreme climate near the surface and to predator avoidance. 相似文献

Chick embryo sterna, which actively synthesize type II procollagen, were pulse-labeled with radioactive proline; protein synthesis was then inhibited by unlabeled proline and cycloheximide. After the inhibition of protein synthesis, several amino acids, polyamines, or structurally related compounds were added to the incubation medium. The conversion of procollagen, first to two intermediates, pC-collagen and pN-collagen, and then to collagen, was monitored by sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide slab gel electrophoresis. The addition of 50 mm β-alanine, arginine, asparagine, glutamine, hydroxylysine, lysine, or ornithine, as well as agmatine, ?-aminocaproic acid, S-2-aminoethylcysteine, cadaverine, canavanine, putrescine, or spermine clearly inhibited the removal of the carboxy-terminal extension and pC-collagen accumulated; the removal of the amino-terminal extension was not affected. The inhibition of the conversion was reversible and unaffected by fetal calf serum. The results suggest that the conversion of type II procollagen to collagen requires at least two separate proteinases for the removal of amino-terminal and carboxy-terminal extensions. The results further suggest that naturally occurring molecules may be used to modulate the rate of conversion of procollagen to collagen, and development of analogs of these compounds may provide the means to interfere with excessive deposition of collagen in diseases with tissue fibrosis. 相似文献

The chemical identity of the immunoreactive LHRH-like peptide biosynthesized in the human placenta 总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
Freshly obtained human placental trophoblasts were minced and pulselabeled for 30 min at 37°C with tritiated L-Tyrosine. After homogenisation, the crude extract was centrifuged and deproteinized with 10% TCA. The supernatant was defatted and the peptides concentrated through hydrophobic binding on ODS-silica cartridges. The bound, crude peptide extract was eluted and subjected to gradient, reverse-phase High Performance Liquid Chromatography. The fractions corresponding to the absorption peak of reference, synthetic LHRH were collected and extensively purified to radioactive homogeneity by further multiple HPLC. After digestion with pyroglutamate aminopeptidase, the resulting nonapeptide was manually sequenced by dansyl-Edman degradation. All the incorporated radioactivity was found to reside exclusively in residue number 4 of the nonapeptide; thus establishing for the first time the primary sequence of biosynthetic placental LHRH as: pGlu-His-Trp-Ser-Tyr-Gly-Leu-Arg-Pro-Gly-NH2, identical to its hypothalamic counterpart. 相似文献
