Cycling of soil carbon in the first year after a clear-felling was compared with that before the felling in a Japanese red
pine forest in Hiroshima Prefecture, west Japan. The daily mean temperature at the soil surface in summer was increased after
the felling in comparison to that before felling, and the water content of both the A0 layer and the surface mineral soil was decreased due to the loss of the forest canopy. The rate of weight loss of the A0 layer was reduced after felling. However, accumulation of the A0 layer rapidly decreased because of the lack of litter supply to the forest floor. Low soil respiration after felling was
mainly caused by the cessation of root respiration. Analysis of annual soil carbon cycling was then conducted using a compartment
model. The relative decomposition rate of the A0 layer decreased whereas that of humus and dead roots in mineral soil increased to some extent after felling. The accumulation
of carbon in mineral soil, however, increased slightly due to the supply of humus from roots killed by the felling. 相似文献

The genotoxicity and mutagenicity of several kinds of quinone pigments from pathogenic fungi were examined by means of the hepatocyte primary culture (HPC)/DNA repair test and of Ames test with TA98 and TA100. Clear genotoxicity of the two quinone chemicals, xanthomegnin and luteosporin were observed in the HPC/DNA repair test, though definite mutagenicity was not detected in the Salmonella microsome test. We examined the effect of interferon (IFN), with particular emphasis on the effects of the two subtypes of IFN-alpha (IFN-alpha A and IFN-alpha B) on the B cell proliferation induced by Staphylococcus aureus Cowan I bacterium (SpA Col). An increase of SpA Col-induced proliferation was observed in the presence of 100 to 1000 U/ml of IFN-alpha, but a decrease of SpA Col-induced proliferation was observed in the presence of 1000 to 10,000 U/ml of IFN-beta. The two subtypes of IFN-alpha had different effects on cell proliferation; a significant enhancement was shown in the presence of 1000 to 10,000 U/ml of IFN-alpha A, but inhibition was shown in the presence of 1000 to 10,000 U/ml of IFN-alpha B. In the reconstitution test of the two subtypes of IFN-alpha, the boundary between enhancement and inhibition of SpA Col-induced proliferation was revealed when the proportion of IFN-alpha A and IFN-alpha B (IFN-alpha A:IFN-alpha B) ranged between 8:2 and 9:1. Toward the SpA Col-induced responses, the above IFN were all found to act on B cells directly, independent of the presence of T cells. Proliferative responses by IFN-alpha and IFN-alpha A, however, were shown to be slightly dependent on the presence of monocytes. The lymphocyte proliferation induced by other mitogens (phytohemagglutinin, concanavalin A, pokeweed mitogen, and protein A of S. aureus) were all inhibited by the above IFN. 相似文献

Krafft points of diacylglycerophosphocholines (PC) were measured in alkanes-cyclohexane solutions by differential scanning calorimetry, and it was found that they were regularly increased following the increase in alkane content in the solutions and the chain length of the alkanes. From these results it was deduced that the mixing of PC with alkanes occurred in the gel state of the PC, but not in micelles at higher temperatures above the Krafft points. where micellar solutions are provided. The penetration of alkanes into gel state PC was found to be dominated by Langmuir type interaction, and the affinity of alkanes increases with increasing in chain lengths. The social behavior pattern of a solitary male at Koshima was studied by means of radio-telemetry. The relationship between the solitary males and the troop was estimated from radio-tracking data of the former's location and movement, and by direct observation of the latter at each corresponding hour.For most of day, the solitary male stayed within a distance of about 20 to 150 m from the central part of the troop, occasionally approaching it. His movement also was synchronized with that of the troop. For two nights, the solitary male slept at places which were about 200 m from the sleeping sites of the troop and faced them across the beach. The relationship between the solitary male and the troop did not seem to be strongly antagonistic.It can be assumed that the solitary male was moving according to certain pre-determined relationships or social contacts with the troop. - In order to get the knowledge on the age composition of “isaza” population in Lake Biwa and the effect of population density on growth, monthly distribution of mean body length and mean body weight has been analyzed on the basis of monthly haul by “isazabiki” trawl during 1949 to 1953 and also 1960 to 1965.
- There is no apparent sex difference in the growth in the first and second years of life.
- “Isaza” population is composed of two age groups, age 0 and 1 groups (1+fish), the latter occupying by far the greater part in commercial catch.
- During the growth season fishes of both ages feed mainly on zooplankton, though in winter frequently take chironomid larvae, gammaridae and others in volume.
- The growth season falls in the period from April to October in both age groups.
- A considerable yearly variation occurring in growth is in close connection with the fluctuation of population density of all ages.
- The influence affected by the density of age 1 group is larger than that by age 0 group.

Summary For serum-free primary culture of adult rat hepatocytes, a synthetic medium DM-160 and rat-tail collagen were selected for
the basal medium and for the culture substratum, respectively. Barbiturates, such as phenobarbital and 1-ethyl-5-isobutylbarbiturate,
efficiently supported survival of hepatocytes and maintained their morphologic features at lower concentrations under the
serum-free conditions than under the serum-supplemented conditions. However, the hepatocyte survival rates under the serum-free
conditions were lower than those under the serum-supplemented conditions in the presence or absence of barbiturates. Supplementation
of the basal medium with a combination of five groups of factors (5Fs), such as eight amino acids (Ala, Arg, Gly, Ile, Met,
Phe, Pro, and Trp), two unsaturated fatty acids (linoleate and oleate), a protease inhibitor (aprotinin), three vitamins (A,
C, and E), and five trace elements (Mn, Fe, Cu, Zn, and Se), improved the hepatocyte survival under the serum-free conditions
in the presence or absence of barbiturates. In other words, the serum could be completely substituted by the 5Fs. Hepatocyte
cultures maintained in the 5Fs-suppelemented basal medium showed excellent induction of tyrosine aminotransferase activity
in response to dexamethasone in the presence or absence of barbiturates. The efficiency of the 5Fs-supplemented basal medium
for maintaining hepatocytes was not inferior to those of other media in common use with hepatocytes, such as Williams' medium
E and Waymouth's medium MB-752/1. In conclusion, maintenance of functional hepatocytes in serum-free primary culture could
be improved by use of the new medium preparation (the 5Fs-supplemented DM-160) in the presence of barbiturates.

Glomerular vasculature was investigated in the carpCyprinus carpio, the scorpionfishSebastiscus marmoratus, and the marine catfishPlotosus lineatus with the resin-replica method. An afferent arteriole was connected with a glomerulus in every fish. It was slender in the
carp, whereas the scorpionfish and marine catfish possessed thick afferent arterioles. The glomerular capillaries were sinusoidal.
The divergences, convergences, and windings of these capillaries were not well developed in any of the fish. The glomerular
capillaries converged into an efferent arteriole in the carp and scorpionfish. In the marine catfish, on the other hand, most
