To explain the life-history strategies of temporary-water fauna, one must be able to describe the temporary habitat. It is necessary to know when it will be wet, how often this occurs, for what period each inundation lasts and what variability there is in this pattern. For logistics reasons one cannot follow each inundation in a pan for the ten years or more needed to establish a pattern. Based on the available inundation data for two seasons at Bain's Vlei Pan in a semi-arid part of South Africa, a model has been developed, using the rainfall pattern over ten years at nearby Bloemfontein, to predict inundation. Over a ten-year period preducted inundations ranged up to 87 days as a result of repeat-rain, with a mean period of 18.8 days, while a rain-episode of less than 20 mm was insufficient to inundate the pans. There was an average of 5.8 inundations per season. Single inundations do not exceed 20 days due to evaporation. When successive showers fall before periods of inundation are over, a specific extension of inundation is predictable. The precise implications of the inundation pattern on organisms requires much analysis. However, there are strong indications based on the growth, survival and pattern of egg-production among three species (Anostraca —Banchipodopsis tridens, Conchostracan —Leptestherialla inermis, and Notostracan —Triops granarius) from the pan and one species (Anostracan -Streptocephalus macrourus) from more permanent waters nearby, that the pattern of inundation is selective of the community held by the pan.  相似文献

The day-to-day fluctuations in water depth, water temperature, dissolved oxygen concentration, pH, conductivity and turbidity of six pans at Bain's Vlei, South Africa, were monitored during five successive inundations from September 1988 to April 1989. Mean duration of inundations was 13.9 days, daytime water temperatures ranged from 10.5 °C–33.1 °C, dissolved oxygen ranged from 30% to 142% saturation and conductivity ranged from 43–2630 µ S cm–1. F-test multivariate analysis indicated that physical and chemical characteristics of all pans were similar during the first inundation but differed significantly during the subsequent inundations. The aquatic pan environment is ephemeral, fluctuating and unpredictable. The biological community should consequently feature adaptations to these conditions.  相似文献

Murine lupus in NZB/NZW F1 (B/W) mice can be prevented by weekly treatment with monoclonal antibodies (MAb) to L3T4 (on "helper/inducer" T cells) if treatment is begun prior to the onset of clinical illness. To determine whether anti-L3T4 could reverse as well as prevent murine lupus, we monitored a cohort of 30 B/W females until age 7 mo, when severe autoimmune disease was established, and then we examined the effects of weekly treatment with MAb to L3T4. The rate of target cell clearance by MAb was considerably slower in old B/W mice than it was in young B/W mice or in normal (BALB/c and C57BL/6) mice. Nonetheless, treatment with anti-L3T4 depleted 90% of circulating L3T4+ cells over 3 mo. In treated mice, the concentration of anti-DNA antibodies fell by 80%, renal insufficiency was reversed, and 1 yr survival was 75% compared to 17% in controls. These findings indicate that L3T4+ cells play an important role in perpetuating murine lupus in B/W mice even after severe disease is present. Because the L3T4 antigen in mice is homologous to the Leu-3/T4 (CD4) antigen in humans, these findings suggest that treatment with CD4 MAb may be effective in people with systemic lupus erythematosus.  相似文献

Treatment of mice with mAb to L3T4 profoundly depletes T helper cells. This treatment inhibits humoral and cellular immunity, retards autoimmunity, and permits the induction of Ag-specific tolerance. Treatment of BALB/c mice with F(ab')2 anti-L3T4 inhibits humoral immunity without depleting L3T4+ cells, which is evidence that mAb to L3T4 may inhibit T helper cell function in vivo. In this report, we demonstrate that F(ab')2 anti-L3T4 also permits the induction of immune tolerance in a manner that is independent of T cell depletion. C57BL/6 mice were treated with 1 mg of F(ab')2 anti-L3T4 every other day for 18 days and from the onset were challenged weekly with the immunogen 2C7, a rat mAb to chicken ovalbumin. These mice failed to respond to 2C7 not only during the treatment period but also for at least 5 mo thereafter. This immune tolerance was Ag-specific; the mice rapidly produced antibodies to subsequent challenge with another Ag, human gamma-globulin. Unlike intact anti-L3T4, which immediately depletes L3T4+ cells by greater than 90%, F(ab')2 anti-L3T4 did not initially deplete cells and caused only a partial reduction by the end of the 18-day treatment. This partial reduction of L3T4+ cells did not contribute to the induction of tolerance because mice that were first challenged with 2C7 3 days after stopping the F(ab')2 anti-L3T4 treatment, when L3T4+ cells were lowest, had a normal Ir to 2C7. These findings demonstrate that mAb to L3T4 permits induction of Ag-specific immune tolerance by a mechanism independent of its ability to deplete L3T4+ cells. They also show that F(ab')2 anti-L3T4 treatment does not impair humoral immunity when immunization is initiated after treatment is stopped. Because L3T4 is homologous to CD4 in humans, our findings suggest that F(ab')2 anti-CD4 may offer significant advantages over the use of intact anti-CD4 as an immunosuppressive agent in humans.  相似文献

Brachionus calyciflorus (Pallas) is a common brachionid in sewage oxidation ponds. The uptake and assimilation of E. coli was optimal at concentrations of 2.7–6.9 × 108 cells ml–1 while assimilation coefficient per body weight of B. calyciflorus was found to be 10% · Ind.–1 d–1. More than two eggs per individual were produced during 24 hours when brachionids were fed with a mixutre of E. coli (109 cells · ml–1) and Chlorella spp. (106 cells · ml–1). The nutritional value of the mixture of E. coli and Chlorella spp. was found to be higher than that of bacteria alone.  相似文献

Action potentials of neurons in cat dorsal and posteroventral cochlear nuclei were recorded extracellularly with glass microelectrodes while the head of the cat was exposed to microwave pulses at 915 MHz using a diathermy applicator. Response thresholds to acoustic tones, acoustic clicks, and microwave pulses were determined for auditory units with characteristic frequencies (CFs) from 278 Hz to 39.2 kHz. Tests with pulsatile stimuli were performed for durations of 20-700 mus, principally 20, 70, and 200 mus. Brainstem midline specific absorption rate (SAR) threshold was as small as 11.1 mW/g per pulse, and specific absorption (SA) threshold was a small as 0.6 muJ/g per pulse. Microwave thresholds were generally lower for CF less than 9 kHz, as were most acoustic thresholds. However, microwave threshold was only weakly related to click threshold and CF-tone threshold of each unit.  相似文献

Human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) vaccines that elicit protective antibody responses at mucosal sites would be highly desirable. Here, we report that intramuscular immunization of candidate HIV-1 vaccine vectors and purified Env proteins elicited potent and durable humoral immune responses in colorectal mucosa in rhesus monkeys. The kinetics, isotypes, functionality, and epitope specificity of these mucosal antibody responses were similar to those of peripheral responses in serum. These data suggest a close immunological relationship between mucosal and systemic antibody responses following vaccination in primates.  相似文献

Cardiovascular implantable devices alter the biofluid dynamics and biochemistry of the blood in which they are placed. These perturbations can lead to thrombus formation which may or may not be desired, depending on the application. In this work, a computational model is developed that couples biofluid dynamics and biochemistry to predict the clotting response of blood to such devices. The model consists of 28 advection–diffusion–reaction partial differential equations to track proteins in the blood involved in clotting and utilizes boundary flux terms to model the initiation of the intrinsic clotting pathway at thrombogenic device surfaces. We use this model to simulate the transient clot growth within a 2D idealized bifurcation aneurysm filled with various distributions of bare metal coils with similar packing densities. The clot model predicts initial clot formation to occur in areas along coil surfaces where flow is minimal and where time-averaged shear rates are the smallest. Among the six coil-filled aneurysm cases simulated, maximum thrombus occlusion ranged between 80.8 and 92.2% of the post-treatment aneurysm volume and was achieved 325–450 s after treatment. With further refinement and validation, the computational clotting model will be a valuable engineering tool for evaluating and comparing the relative performance of cardiovascular implantable devices.  相似文献
