Objective: This study identified genetic and environmental influences on the tracking of body size from birth to 16 to 18.5 years of age. Research Methods and Procedures: Longitudinal information was collected from a nationally representative sample of Finnish twin adolescents (birth cohorts 1975 to 1979) and their parents through questionnaires mailed when the twins were ages 16 and 18.5 years old. The sample included 702 monozygotic, 724 same‐sex dizygotic, and 762 opposite‐sex dizygotic sets of twins. The measures used were length, weight, ponderal index (kilograms per cubic meters), and gestational age at birth, and height, weight, and body mass index (kilograms per square meters) at 16 to 18.5 years of age. The changes in genetic and environmental influences on body size from birth to early adulthood were analyzed by quantitative genetic modeling. Results: The twins who had a higher weight or ponderal index at birth were taller and heavier in early adulthood, whereas those who were longer at birth were taller, but not heavier, later in life. Adult height was affected more by the birth size than body mass index. In the genetic modeling analyses, the genetic factors accounting for the variation of body size became more apparent with age, and both genetic and environmental influences on stature had a sizable carry‐over effect from birth to late adolescence, whereas for relative weight, the influences were more age‐specific. Discussion: The genetic and environmental architecture of body size changes from birth to adulthood. Even in monozygotic twins who share their genetic background, the initially larger twin tended to remain larger, demonstrating the long‐lasting effects of fetal environment on final body size.  相似文献

In recent years, many genomewide screens have been performed, to identify novel loci predisposing to various complex diseases. Often, only a portion of the collected clinical data from the study subjects is used in the actual analysis of the trait, and much of the phenotypic data is ignored. With proper consent, these data could subsequently be used in studies of common quantitative traits influencing human biology, and such a reanalysis method would be further justified by the nonbiased ascertainment of study individuals. To make our point, we report here a quantitative-trait-locus (QTL) analysis of body-mass index (BMI) and stature (i.e., height), with genotypic data from genome scans of five Finnish study groups. The combined study group was composed of 614 individuals from 247 families. Five study groups were originally ascertained in genetic studies on hypertension, obesity, osteoarthritis, migraine, and familial combined hyperlipidemia. Most of the families are from the Finnish Twin Cohort, which represents a population-wide sample. In each of the five genome scans, approximately 350 evenly spaced markers were genotyped on 22 autosomes. In analyzing the genotype data by a variance-component method, we found, on chromosome 7pter (maximum multipoint LOD score of 2.91), evidence for QTLs affecting stature, and a second locus, with suggestive evidence for linkage to stature, was detected on chromosome 9q (maximum multipoint LOD score of 2.61). Encouragingly, the locus on chromosome 7 is supported by the data reported by Hirschhorn et al. (in this issue), who used a similar method. We found no evidence for QTLs affecting BMI.  相似文献

Chronic nitrogen (N) deposition is a threat to biodiversity that results from the eutrophication of ecosystems. We studied long‐term monitoring data from 28 forest sites with a total of 1,335 permanent forest floor vegetation plots from northern Fennoscandia to southern Italy to analyse temporal trends in vascular plant species cover and diversity. We found that the cover of plant species which prefer nutrient‐poor soils (oligotrophic species) decreased the more the measured N deposition exceeded the empirical critical load (CL) for eutrophication effects (P = 0.002). Although species preferring nutrient‐rich sites (eutrophic species) did not experience a significantly increase in cover (P = 0.440), in comparison to oligotrophic species they had a marginally higher proportion among new occurring species (P = 0.091). The observed gradual replacement of oligotrophic species by eutrophic species as a response to N deposition seems to be a general pattern, as it was consistent on the European scale. Contrary to species cover changes, neither the decrease in species richness nor of homogeneity correlated with nitrogen CL exceedance (ExCLempN). We assume that the lack of diversity changes resulted from the restricted time period of our observations. Although existing habitat‐specific empirical CL still hold some uncertainty, we exemplify that they are useful indicators for the sensitivity of forest floor vegetation to N deposition.  相似文献

Abstract Mercaptoethanol (EtSH) was shown to enhance the solubility of the 39.5 kDa outer membrane (OM) protein of elementary bodies of chlamydia trachomatis in detergents. In the presence of mild detergents and EtSH almost selective solubilization of the 39.5 kDa protein and chlamydial LPS was obtained. This solution was further applied to gel filtration in the presence of SDS to purify the 39.5 kDa protein free of LPS.  相似文献

Treatment with SiO2 releases from peritoneal macrophages a soluble factor which stimulates the synthesis of collagen and other proteins in incubated slices of experimental granulation tissue. This factor can also be obtained by SiO2-treatment from certain subcellular particles of intact macrophages. A similar agent is released from the macrophages by incubation with rheumatoid synovialtissue extract. Macrophages induced by paraffin or thioglycollate medium cannot be stimulated further by SiO2. The SiO2-treated macrophages have no effect on detached matrix-free cells from embryonic-chick tendon or granulation tissue. Another factor from macrophages, present in the 100000 g-supernatant of the homogenate, inhibits the synthesis of collagen in granuloma slices. The synthesis of DNA and RNA in slices is suppressed by the extract from intact macrophages but not affected by preparations obtained with SiO2. The possible relevance of these findings to lysosomal actions, to the regulation of granuloma formation and to inflammation are discussed.  相似文献

In our earlier report it was found that after intravenous infusion of ethanol into monkeys the drinking of oxygenated water accelerated their elimination rate of ethanol 60% on the average. The acceleration was assumed to be due to increased hepatic oxygen tension through the portal blood flow. Now we have repeated similar experiments using humans as subjects. In humans the elimination rate of ethanol was not changed by oxygenated drinks. We are not able to explain the species difference, because the mechanism by which oxygenated water increased ethanol elimination in monkeys is unsettled.  相似文献

Transfer of European mink (Mustela lutreola) embryos into hybrid recipients   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
The European mink is considered as a highly endangered Mustelidae species. The objective of this study was to explore the intriguing possibility of embryo transfer from European mink to closely related Mustelidae recipient females. To overcome interspecies pregnancy failure, embryos of European mink (Mustela lutreola) were transferred into hybrid females obtained after mating of European polecat (Mustela putorius) males and European mink (M. lutreola) females and vice versa. A total of 32 blastocysts were surgically flushed from the uteri of nine European mink donors and surgically transferred into six pseudopregnant hybrid recipients. One of the recipients received a single embryo and did not whelp. The remaining five recipients each received five to eight embryos and delivered kits. The overall success rate was 50% (16 kits/32 transferred embryos). For both male and female offspring, the average birth weight was lower in ET group when compared with naturally bred control population of European mink. The postnatal mortality rate was significantly higher in ET group as compared to controls: only 9 of 16 kits survived past the first week. At 10 days of age, the average weight for male offspring from the ET and control groups did not differ, although differences still persisted at this age for female offspring. At 3 months of age, the weight of male and female offspring in the ET group did not differ from European minks born after natural mating. We propose that transfer of European mink embryos to hybrid recipients be considered as a new experimental tool within the framework of ex situ approach conservation of this aboriginal European mustelid.  相似文献

1. The formation in vivo of retinoic acid from microgram quantities of intrajugularly administered [15-(14)C]retinol was demonstrated in the rat. 2. Endogenously formed retinoic acid (about 0.1mug./rat) was found in liver, and to a much smaller extent in intestine, 12hr. after retinol administration. 3. Excretion of some of the endogenously formed retinoic acid occurred in the bile of bile-duct-cannulated rats. 4. Excretion of unaltered retinoic acid in the urine of intact rats did not occur even after the intrajugular administration of preformed retinoic acid.  相似文献
