1. 1. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of fiber type and fabric moisture content on SC hydration.

2. 2. Using three similarly constructed fabrics, six fabric type/moisture content combinations were selected.

3. 3. Fabric swatches were placed on both “normal” and “hydrated” volar forearm skin of five subjects for a specified period, then removed.

4. 4. Two minutes after removal, evaporative water loss (EWL) and skin temperature were measured.

5. 5. Data were analyzed using analyses of variance and Bonferroni t-tests.

6. 6. For normal skin, SC hydration generally increased as fabric moisture content increased. SC was significantly drier after being in contact with cotton swatches at regain than at the two moisture content levels above regain, and also under polyester swatches.

7. 7. For hydrated skin, hydration state was significantly lower under the cotton swatch at regain than at 38.6% moisture content or at saturation, but was not significantly different under the polyester swatch at regain or at saturation.

BACKGROUND TO THE DEBATE: Isotretinoin is an effective treatment for severe acne, a condition which can be physically, emotionally, and socially disabling. Because the drug is teratogenic, causing severe birth defects, women taking the drug are directed to avoid pregnancy. In the United States, a series of risk reduction programs have been implemented that aim to prevent pregnant women from taking the drug and to prevent women taking it from getting pregnant. The most recent, and most stringent, is an Internet-based, performance-linked system called iPLEDGE, which tries to ensure that the drug is dispensed only when there is documentary proof that the patient is not pregnant and is using two forms of birth control. Is iPLEDGE the best way to reduce isotretinoin birth defects, or is it an unproven and overly burdensome system?  相似文献

A common phenomenon of organic solar cells (OSCs) incorporating metal‐oxide electron extraction layers is the requirement to expose the devices to UV light in order to improve device characteristics – known as the so‐called “light‐soaking” issue. This behaviour appears to be of general validity for various metal‐oxide layers, various organic donor/acceptor systems, and regardless if single junction devices or multi stacked cells are considered. The requirement of UV exposure of OSCs may impose severe problems if substrates with limited UV transmission, UV blocking filters or UV to VIS down‐conversion concepts are applied. In this paper, we will demonstrate that this issue can be overcome by the use of Al doped ZnO (AZO) as electron extraction interlayer. In contrast to devices based on TiOx and ZnO, the AZO devices show well‐behaved solar cell characteristics with a high fill factor (FF) and power conversion efficiency (PCE) even without the UV spectral components of the AM1.5 solar spectrum. As opposed to previous claims, our results indicate that the origin of s‐shaped characteristics of the OSCs is the metal‐oxide/organic interface. The electronic structures of the TiOx/fullerene and AZO/fullerene interfaces are studied by photoelectron spectroscopy, revealing an electron extraction barrier for the TiOx/fullerene case and facilitated electron extraction for AZO/fullerene. These results are of general relevance for organic solar cells based on various donor acceptor active systems.  相似文献

Literature from the first half of this century reports concern for toxicity from topical use of boric acid, but assessment of percutaneous absorption has been impaired by lack of analytical sensitivity. Analytical methods in this study included inductively coupled plasmamass spectrometry which now allows quantitation of percutaneous absorption of10B in10B-enriched boric acid, borax and disodium octaborate tetrahydrate (DOT) in biological matrices. In vitro human skin percent doses of boric acid absorbed were 1.2 for a 0.05% solution, 0.28 for a 0.5% solution, and 0.70 for a 5.0% solution. These absorption amounts translated into flux values of, respectively, 0.25, 0.58, and 14.58 μg/cm2/h, and permeability constants (K p ) of 5.0 x 10-4, 1.2 x 10-4, and 2.9 x 10-4 cm/h for the 0.05%, 0.5%, and 5.0% solutions. The above in vitro doses were at infinite, 1000 μL/cm2 volume. At 2 μL/cm2 (the in vivo dosing volume), flux decreased some 200-fold to 0.07 μg/cm2/h andK p of 1.4 x 10-6 cm/h, while percent dose absorbed was 1.75%. Borax dosed at 5.0%/1000 μL/cm2 had 0.41 percent dose absorbed, flux at 8.5 μg/cm2/h, andK p was 1.7 x 10-4 cm/h. Disodium octaborate tetrahydrate (DOT) dosed at 10%/1000 μL/cm2 was 0.19 percent dose absorbed, flux at 7.9 μg/cm2/h, andK p was 0.8 x ICH cm/h. These in vitro results from infinite doses (1000 μL/cm2) were a 1000-fold greater than those obtained in the companion in vivo study. The results from the finite (2 μL/cm2) dosing were closer (10-fold difference) to the in vivo results. General application of infinite dose percutaneous absorption values for risk assessment is questioned by these results.  相似文献

The nasal flora of coagulase-positive staphylococcus carriers and noncarriers was studied in aerobic conditions in 17 individuals. Five hundred milligrams of cephalexin was given orally four times daily for 12 days, and its effects on the nasal bacteria were determined quantitatively before, during, and after treatment. The total count obtained before the drug treatment was 5.4 x 10(6) in carriers and 3.9 x 10(6) in noncarriers. The lowest total count observed was 3 days after the cessation of the drug. The increase in gram-negative rods was seen 9 days after antibiotic therapy, not during the greatest reduction of gram-positive bacteria. Coagulase-positive cocci and diphtheroids were most sensitive to drug treatment. After 36 days, the total count was restored to pretreatment level. Diphtheroids did not return to the original number and were replaced by a corresponding increase of resistant coagulase-negative cocci. An inverse relationship between coagulase-negative cocci and lipophilic diphtheroids was seen in the anterior nares of many individuals. No gross difference in nasal ecology to differentiate carriers from noncarriers was seen.  相似文献

A gloved-hand wash method was used to compare the antimicrobial effect of chlorhexidine gluconate alcohol emollient hand wash (HIBISTAT) with that of 70% isopropyl alcohol on the normal flora of the hands (81 subjects) under conditions designed to mimic use by surgeons. Results of the immediate postwash effects on the bacterial counts for all 3 tests days showed that chlorhexidine significantly reduced the normal flora of the hands. When compared with the base line bacterial counts, there was 85, 96, and 98% reduction with chlorhexidine treatment and 84, 93, and 90% reduction with alcohol treatment on days 1,2, and 5, respectively. The difference between chlorhexidine and alcohol treatments was not statistically significant on days 1 and 2, but was significant on day 5 (P less than 0.01). For delayed postwash bacterial counts (for persistent antimicrobial effects), the overall log means were 4.9943 and 5.4684 for chlorhexidine and alcohol treatments, respectively. The difference between the two treatments was significant (P less than 0.01). After the chlorhexidien treatment, there was no significant growth of bacteria over a period of 6 h when compared with the base line bacterial counts.  相似文献

Background  

SSADH (aldehyde dehydrogenase 5a1 (Aldh5a1); γ-hydroxybutyric (GHB) aciduria) deficiency is a defect of GABA degradation in which the neuromodulators GABA and GHB accumulate. The human phenotype is that of nonprogressive encephalopathy with prominent bilateral discoloration of the globi pallidi and variable seizures, the latter displayed prominently in Aldh5a1-/- mice with lethal convulsions. Metabolic studies in murine neural tissue have revealed elevated GABA [and its derivatives succinate semialdehyde (SSA), homocarnosine (HC), 4,5-dihydroxyhexanoic acid (DHHA) and guanidinobutyrate (GB)] and GHB [and its analogue D-2-hydroxyglutarate (D-2-HG)] at birth. Because of early onset seizures and the neurostructural anomalies observed in patients, we examined metabolite features during Aldh5a1-/- embryo development.  相似文献
