Anaemia is a widespread problem especially in the tropics. Among adolescent girls, it has negative consequences on growth, school performance, morbidity and reproductive performance. A cross-sectional study was conducted to investigate the prevalence of anaemia, iron, folate, zinc and copper deficiencies amongst adolescent schoolgirls in New Halfa, eastern Sudan, and to examine the relationship of these micronutrients with haemoglobin (Hb) levels. Out of 187 adolescent schoolgirls, 181 (96.8%) had anaemia (Hb?<?12 g/dl); 21% had mild anaemia (Hb 11.0–11.9 g/dl); 66.8.1% had moderate anaemia (Hb 8.0–10.9 g/dl), and 12.1% had severe anaemia (Hb?<?8 g/dl), respectively. Iron deficiency (S-ferritin?<?12 μg/l), iron deficiency anaemia (<12 m/dl and S- ferritin?<?12 μg/l) and folate deficiency (S-folate?<?3 ng/ml) were prevalent in 17.6%, 16.5% and 69% of these girls, respectively. Nine percent and 5.9% of these girls had zinc (<75 μg/ml) and copper deficiency (<75 μg/ml), respectively. Twenty-six (14%) girls had ≥2 micronutrient deficiencies. S-ferritin and zinc were significantly lower in patients with severe anaemia. Haemoglobin levels were significantly positively correlated with zinc levels (r?=?0.161, P?=?0.03) and with copper levels (r?=?0.151, P?=?0.03). Thus, interventions are required to prevent and control anaemia in this setting. Further research is needed.  相似文献

Cardiovascular complications are the most common causes of morbidity and mortality in diabetic patients. Coronary atherosclerosis is enhanced in diabetics, whereas myocardial infarction represents 20% of deaths of diabetic subjects. Furthermore, re-infarction and heart failure are more common in the diabetics. Diabetic cardiomyopathy is characterized by an early diastolic dysfunction and a later systolic one, with intracellular retention of calcium and sodium and loss of potassium. In addition, diabetes mellitus accelerates the development of left ventricular hypertrophy in hypertensive patients and increases cardiovascular mortality and morbidity. Treating the cardiovascular problems in diabetics must be undertaken with caution. Special consideration must be given with respect to the ionic and metabolic changes associated with diabetes. For example, although ACE inhibitors and calcium channel blockers are suitable agents, potassium channel openers cause myocardial preconditioning and decrease the infarct size in animal models, but they inhibit the insulin release after glucose administration in healthy subjects. Furthermore, potassium channel blockers abolish myocardial preconditioning and increase infarct size in animal models, but they protect the heart from the fatal arrhytmias induced by ischemia and reperfusion which may be important in diabetes. For example, diabetic peripheral neuropathy usually presents with silent ischemia and infarction. Mechanistically, parasympathetic cardiac nerve dysfunction, expressed as increased resting heart rate and decreased respiratory variation in heart rate, is more frequent than the sympathetic cardiac nerve dysfunction expressed as a decrease in the heart rate rise during standing.  相似文献

Growth responses of two phytopathogenic fungi to fernasan in culture media   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0  
The toxic effect of fernasan (containing 25% thiram) was tested on Rhizoctonia solani and Fusarium solani in liquid and agar media. The fungicide was more effective in liquid (at 100 p.p.m.) than in solid media, where 400 p.p.m. checked the growth of R. solani, but was ineffective against F. solani. Both fungi exhibited a zone of inversion growth in liquid culture whereby certain intermediate concentrations were less inhibitory than lower or subsequently higher doses. Similar reaction was recorded for F. solani alone in fungicide-containing agar media. Sclerotium formation by R. solani was highly significant, in relation to controls, at 40 p.p.m. The abundance of chlamydospores of F. solani was coupled with cessation of conidium formation increasing fernasan doses.  相似文献

A preliminary investigation of two methods of isolating pathogenic aerobic actinomycetes from a group of Sudanese soils was undertaken. By one method,Nocardia asteroides was isolated from 3 out of 4 soils. By the second method, two strains ofN. brasiliensis and three ofActinomadura madurae were recovered from 4 out of 10 soils. Both procedures seem to be advantageous for isolating pathogenic aerobic actinomycetes from soils.  相似文献

Aldrex T enhanced the mean number of groundnut nodules due to in vitro application at a higher than field concentration (6 g/kg groundnut kernels). Dressing at lower and agricultural applications (1.5 and 3, respectively) not only depressed but also considerably delayed nodule formation. This feature was demonstrated by the great losses in nodule number and weight as well. The latter picked up after 11 weeks to equate that of the controls. Interference of the fungicide in nodulation was highly significant at the sixth week of sowing. An insignificant increase in the number of root nodules was recorded at the tenth week of plant growth thus signifying recovery ofRhizobium from aldrex sensitivity. Dressing at 6 g/kg seeds did not affect the number and weight of nodules particularly after the fourth week of groundnut growth. Subsequently a highly significant increase in nodule weight was noticed.Nitrate and nitrite yield of nodules was favourably affected when kernels received twice the agricultural dose when compared with the non-dressed controls.  相似文献

Induction of inhibited growth halo, around filter paper discs or groundnut seeds dusted with aldrex T, diameter of which consistently increased with dressing application rate, was exhibited by the root nodule bacteriumRhizobium leguminosarum. Some cells sensitive to aldrex T gained recovery upon transference to fresh media denoting a bacteriostatic effect of the anti-fungal dressing.The viable bacterial cells steadily declined with fungicide concentrations between 100 and 500 p.p.m. An increase of 130% in viable colony count was recorded when the dose was increased to 700 p.p.m., and a relatively similar increase at 900 p.p.m., thus exhibiting a zone of inverted growth at 500 p.p.m. which was also confirmed by the optical density test. The latter was reliable after 24h incubation when the turbidity uniformly deminished with the fungicide dose to a maximal decline at 500 p.p.m. Aldrex T decreased the log and increased the stationary phases ofR. leguminosarum growth at all test doses.In vitro treatment ofR. leguminosarum with the fungicide exhibited some changes in bacterial morphology, cell lysis and shrinkage of cell membrane as revealed by the electron microscope.  相似文献

Growth of Aspergillus flavus and Trichoderma viride on agar media was inhibited around embryos of green peanut seeds but not around embryos of cured seeds, intact peanut seeds, or testae. Both fungi were able to colonize intact seeds and testae. Substances inhibitory to A. flavus and T. viride were extracted with acetone from cotyledons of freshly harvested peanut seeds. Four compounds inhibitory to A. flavus were detected in crude acetone extracts. Three of the compounds demonstrated properties of phenolics. Results of this study suggest that inhibitory compounds in peanut cotyledons may play a role in protecting the peanut embryo from fungal infection.Journal Series No. 486, New Mexico State University, Agriculture Experiment Station, Las Cruces. Indian oil sardines (Sardinella longiceps) were collected throughout a full year, sun-dried and their chemical composition was determined to evaluate their value as protein supplement for Omani sheep. A feeding trial was carried out with 30 Omani intact male sheep divided randomly into four groups. They were individually fed one of four experimental diets containing 50 g/kg soybean meal as a major source of protein or 50, 100 or 200 g/kg dried sardines as a main protein source. Daily feed intakes and bi-weekly body weights (BW) were recorded. At the end of the 63-day trial, animals were slaughtered and their carcasses dissected. The dried sardines varied in body weight, body measurements, and dry matter content and chemical components throughout the year. On average they contained 450–720 g/kg CP, 40–260 g/kg EE and 110–210 g/kg ash. Inclusion of dry sardines as a major protein source (up to 200 g/kg) did not negatively affect the performance of Omani sheep in terms of body weight gain, feed conversion ratio or carcass composition. However, feeding sardines at 200 g/kg level significantly (P < 0.05) reduced feed intake as percentage of body weight. This study indicated that solar dried sardines might be used at levels up to 100 g/kg in diets of Omani sheep without compromising their feedlot performance.  相似文献

Khartoum air was scanned for airborne Aspergillus flavus for 12 months using the horizontal gravitational settling method. Frequency of occurrence was related to total fungal catch and dusty weather. The Aspergilli were prevalent (68% of total isolated/plate/month) and A. flavus constituted 31% of the total Aspergilli. In June (hot, dry & dusty) Aspergilli constituted 79% of the total isolates, whilst A. flavus represented 30% from amongst the other Aspergilli. A. flavus, A. niger, A. nidulans (conidial & ascosporic states), A. terreus, Eurotium amstelodami and A. fumigatus, in descending order of prevalence were isolated in June. Other pathogenic or potentially pathogenic forms, isolated, were Cladosporium, Curvularia and Penicillium. Amongst winter isolations A. flavus was sporadic to absent in occurrence. A. flavus spore inocula that underwent hourly intermitted exposure to 45 °C, showed a decrease in spore germinability as well as reduced germ length.  相似文献

Kisspeptin analogues with improved metabolic stability may represent important ligands in the study of the kisspeptin/KISS1R system and have therapeutic potential. In this paper we assess the activity of known and novel kisspeptin analogues utilising a dual luciferase reporter assay in KISS1R‐transfected HEK293T cells. In general terms the results reflect the outcomes of other assay formats and a number of potent agonists were identified among the analogues, including β2‐hTyr‐modified and fluorescently labelled forms. We also showed, by assaying kisspeptin in the presence of protease inhibitors, that proteolysis of kisspeptin activity within the reporter assay itself may diminish the agonist outputs.
