Background

Tobacco smoking (TS) and illicit drug use (IDU) are of public health concerns especially in developing countries, including Bangladesh. This paper aims to (i) identify the determinants of TS and IDU, and (ii) examine the association of TS with IDU among young slum dwellers in Bangladesh.

Methodology/Principal Findings

Data on a total of 1,576 young slum dwellers aged 15–24 years were extracted for analysis from the 2006 Urban Health Survey (UHS), which covered a nationally representative sample of 13,819 adult men aged 15–59 years from slums, non-slums and district municipalities of six administrative regions in Bangladesh. Methods used include frequency run, Chi-square test of association and multivariable logistic regression. The overall prevalence of TS in the target group was 42.3%, of which 41.4% smoked cigarettes and 3.1% smoked bidis. The regression model for TS showed that age, marital status, education, duration of living in slums, and those with sexually transmitted infections were significantly (p<0.001 to p<0.05) associated with TS. The overall prevalence of IDU was 9.1%, dominated by those who had drug injections (3.2%), and smoked ganja (2.8%) and tari (1.6%). In the regression model for IDU, the significant (p<0.01 to p<0.10) predictors were education, duration of living in slums, and whether infected by sexually transmitted diseases. The multivariable logistic regression (controlling for other variables) revealed significantly (p<0.001) higher likelihood of IDU (OR = 9.59, 95% CI = 5.81–15.82) among users of any form of TS. The likelihood of IDU increased significantly (p<0.001) with increased use of cigarettes.

Conclusions/Significance

Certain groups of youth are more vulnerable to TS and IDU. Therefore, tobacco and drug control efforts should target these groups to reduce the consequences of risky lifestyles through information, education and communication (IEC) programs.  相似文献

Introduction

Measurement of optic nerve sheath diameter (ONSD) by ultrasound is increasingly used as a marker to detect raised intracranial pressure (ICP). ONSD varies with age and there is no clear consensus between studies for an upper limit of normal. Knowledge of normal ONSD in a healthy population is essential to interpret this measurement.

Methods

In a prospective observational study, ONSD was measured using a 15 MHz ultrasound probe in healthy volunteers in Chittagong, Bangladesh. The aims were to determine the normal range of ONSD in healthy Bangladeshi adults and children, compare measurements in males and females, horizontal and vertical beam orientations and left and right eyes in the same individual and to determine whether ONSD varies with head circumference independent of age.

Results

136 subjects were enrolled, 12.5% of whom were age 16 or under. Median ONSD was 4.41 mm with 95% of subjects in the range 4.25–4.75 mm. ONSD was bimodally distributed. There was no relationship between ONSD and age (≥4 years), gender, head circumference, and no difference in left vs right eye or horizontal vs vertical beam.

Conclusions

Ultrasonographic ONSD in Bangladeshi healthy volunteers has a narrow bimodal distribution independent of age (≥4 years), gender and head circumference. ONSD >4.75 mm in this population should be considered abnormal.  相似文献

We studied the interbirth interval (IBI) and litter size of the population of free-ranging Bengal tigers (Panthera tigris tigris) in dry tropical deciduous forests in Ranthambhore Tiger Reserve (RTR), Rajasthan, and Pench Tiger Reserve (PTR), Madhya Pradesh, between April 2005 and June 2011. Data on 15 breeding females in RTR and nine breeding females in PTR were collected using camera trapping, direct observation and radio-telemetry. The mean?±?standard error of IBI (months) in RTR was 33.4?±?3.7 and in PTR was 25.2?±?1.8. A significant difference was observed between the mean IBI of tigresses in RTR and those in PTR (df?=?9, P?=?0.04). The estimated mean litter size in RTR was 2.3?±?0.1 and that in PTR was 2.9?±?0.2. There was a significant difference between the litter size in RTR and that in PTR (χ 2?=?12.04, P?=?0.017, df?=?4). Since RTR and PTR are the important source populations of tigers in the Western and Central Indian landscapes, we propose that the tigers in these reserves be monitored, particularly for reproductive traits that are essential for understanding aspects of their population ecology.  相似文献

H2 relaxin (relaxin) is a member of the insulin–relaxin superfamily and exhibits several non-reproductive functions in addition to its well-known properties as a pregnancy hormone. Over the years, the therapeutic potential of relaxin has been examined for a number of conditions. It is currently in phase III clinical trials for the treatment of acute heart failure. The 53 amino acid peptide hormone consists of two polypeptide chains (A and B) which are cross-linked by two inter-chains and one intra-A chain disulfide bridge. Although its cognate receptor is relaxin family peptide receptor (RXFP) 1, relaxin is also able to cross-react with RXFP2, for which the native ligand is INSL3. The “RXXXRXXI” motif in the B-chain of H2 relaxin is responsible for primary binding to LRR of the RXFP1 receptor (Büllesbach and Schwabe, J Biol Chem 280:14051–14056, 2005). Previous RXFP2 receptor mutation and molecular modelling studies strongly suggest that, in addition to this motif, the Trp-B28 residue in the B-chain is responsible for H2–RXFP2 interaction. To confirm this finding, here we have mutated H2 relaxin in which Trp-B28 was replaced with alanine. The synthetic relaxin analogue was then tested on cells expressing either RXFP1 or 2 to determine the affinity and potency for the respective receptors. Our results confirm that Trp-B28 in the B-chain is crucial for binding and activating RXFP2, but not for RXFP1.  相似文献

Insulin-like peptide 5 (INSL5) is a two-chain, three-disulfide bonded member of insulin/relaxin superfamily of peptides that includes insulin, insulin-like growth factor I and II (IGFI and IGFII), insulin-like peptide 3, 4, 5 and 6 (INSL3, 4, 5 and 6), relaxin-1 (H1 relaxin), -2 (H2 relaxin) and -3 (H3 relaxin). Although it is expressed in relatively high levels in the gut, its biological function remains unclear. However, recent reports suggest a significant orexigenic action and a role in the regulation of insulin secretion and β-cell homeostasis, which implies that both agonists and antagonists of the peptide may have significant therapeutic applications. Modern solid phase synthesis techniques together with regioselective disulfide bond formation were employed for a preliminary structure–function relationship study of mouse INSL5. Two point mutated analogues, mouse INSL5 A-B(R24A, W25A) and mouse INSL5 A-B(K6A, R14A, Y18A) were chemically prepared, where the residues in the B-chain that may be involved in receptor activation and affinity binding, were respectively mutated. Synthetic mouse INSL5 A-B(R24A, W25A) analogue was inactive on RXFP4, the native receptor for INSL5, suggesting ArgB24 and TrpB25 are probably directly involved in INSL5 receptor activation. Mouse INSL5 A-B(K6A, R14A, Y18A) analogue had both decreased affinity and potency on RXFP4 (pIC50 7.7 ± 0.2, pEC50 7.87 ± 0.18) which indicated that one or more of these residues are critical for the binding to the receptor.  相似文献

Health risk for well drinking water is a worldwide problem. Our recent studies showed increased toxicity by exposure to barium alone (≤700 µg/L) and coexposure to barium (137 µg/L) and arsenic (225 µg/L). The present edition of WHO health-based guidelines for drinking water revised in 2011 has maintained the values of arsenic (10 µg/L) and barium (700 µg/L), but not elements such as manganese, iron and zinc. Nevertheless, there have been very few studies on barium in drinking water and human samples. This study showed significant correlations between levels of arsenic and barium, but not its homologous elements (magnesium, calcium and strontium), in urine, toenail and hair samples obtained from residents of Jessore, Bangladesh. Significant correlation between levels of arsenic and barium in well drinking water and levels in human urine, toenail and hair samples were also observed. Based on these results, a high-performance and low-cost adsorbent composed of a hydrotalcite-like compound for barium and arsenic was developed. The adsorbent reduced levels of barium and arsenic from well water in Bangladesh and Vietnam to <7 µg/L within 1 min. Thus, we have showed levels of arsenic and barium in humans and propose a novel remediation system.  相似文献

Photosystem II (PSII) of photosynthesis has the unique ability to photochemically oxidize water. Recently an engineered bacterioferritin photochemical ‘reaction centre’ (BFR-RC) using a zinc chlorin pigment (ZnCe6) in place of its native heme has been shown to photo-oxidize bound manganese ions through a tyrosine residue, thus mimicking two of the key reactions on the electron donor side of PSII. To understand the mechanism of tyrosine oxidation in BFR-RCs, and explore the possibility of water oxidation in such a system we have built an atomic-level model of the BFR-RC using ONIOM methodology. We studied the influence of axial ligands and carboxyl groups on the oxidation potential of ZnCe6 using DFT theory, and finally calculated the shift of the redox potential of ZnCe6 in the BFR-RC protein using the multi-conformational molecular mechanics–Poisson-Boltzmann approach. According to our calculations, the redox potential for the first oxidation of ZnCe6 in the BRF-RC protein is only 0.57 V, too low to oxidize tyrosine. We suggest that the observed tyrosine oxidation in BRF-RC could be driven by the ZnCe6 di-cation. In order to increase the efficiency of tyrosine oxidation, and ultimately oxidize water, the first potential of ZnCe6 would have to attain a value in excess of 0.8 V. We discuss the possibilities for modifying the BFR-RC to achieve this goal.  相似文献

Peptoids belong to a class of sequence-controlled polymers comprising of N-alkylglycine. This study focuses on using tandem mass spectrometry techniques to characterize the fragmentation patterns of a set of singly and doubly protonated peptoids consisting of one basic residue placed at different positions. The singly protonated peptoids fragment by producing predominately high-abundant C-terminal ions called Y-ions and low-abundant N-terminal ions called B-ions. Computational studies suggest that the proton affinity (PA) of the C-terminal fragments is generally higher than that of the N-terminal fragments, and the PA of the former increases as the fragments are elongated. The B-ions are likely formed upon dissociating the proton-activated amide bonds via an oxazolone structure, and the Y-ions are produced subsequently by abstracting a proton from the newly formed B-ions, which is energetically favored. The doubly protonated peptoids prefer to fragment closest to either the N- or the C-terminus and produce corresponding B/Y-ion pairs. The basic residue seems to dictate the preferred fragmentation site, which may be the result of minimizing the repulsion between the two charges. Water and terminal neutral losses are a facile process accompanying the peptoid fragmentation in both charge states. The patterns appear to be highly influenced by the location of the basic residue.  相似文献

.The fig leaf roller or Fig-tree Skeletoniser, Choreutis nemorana (Lep.: Choreutidae), is a destructive pest of fig trees found in some fig-growing areas of Iran. The larvae feed on the upper level of leaves, near the main vein. In this study, digestive carbohydrases including α-glucosidase, β-glucosidase, α-galactosidase, β-galactosidase and proteinases including trypsin, chymotrypsin and elastase were investigated. The results showed that the carbohydrases were present in the alimentary tracts of the pest. Optimum pH for α-glucosidase and β-glucosidase activity was at pH 6.0 and 7.0, respectively. Maximum activity of α-galactosidase and β-galactosidase occurred at pH 6.0. Total proteolitic activity against the substrate azocasein was optimally occurred at pH 10.0. The greatest activity of trypsin, chymotrypsin and elastase was determined at pH 10.0, 11.0 and 11.0, respectively. Zymogram analyses using nitrocellulose membrane revealed two trypsin isoforms in which one of them was completely inhibited by Soybean Kunitz inhibitor and the other was notably inhibited.  相似文献
