Allochronic speciation refers to a mode of sympatric speciation in which the differentiation of populations is primarily due to a phenological shift without habitat or host change. However, it has been so far rarely documented. The present paper reports on a plausible case of allochronic differentiation between sympatric populations of the pine processionary moth (PPM), Thaumetopoea pityocampa. The PPM is a Mediterranean insect with winter larval development. A phenologically atypical population with early adult activity and summer larval development was detected 10 years ago in Portugal. Mitochondrial and nuclear sequences strongly suggest that the 'summer' individuals are closely related to the sympatric winter population, while microsatellite data show a reduction in allelic richness, a distortion of allelic frequencies and significant genetic differentiation. Moreover, monitoring of adult flights suggests that reproductive activity does not overlap between the summer and winter populations. We postulate that the summer population appeared after a sudden phenological shift of some individuals of the sympatric winter population, leading to a founder effect and complete reproductive isolation. Given that the individuals showing this new phenology are subject to different selection pressures, the observed allochronic differentiation may rapidly lead to deeper divergence. 相似文献

Among other non-antibiotic properties, tetracyclines inhibit matrix metalloproteinases and are currently under study for the treatment of osteoarthritis. Quaternary ammonium conjugates of tetracyclines were synthesized by direct alkylation of the amine function at the 4-position with methyl iodide. When tested in vitro, they inhibited cytokine-induced MMP expression to a lesser extent than parent tetracyclines. This was compensated by an improved inhibition of MMP catalytic activity. Since inhibition of collagen degradation was maintained these derivatives could be potent drug candidates for cartilage-targeted chondroprotective treatment. 相似文献

Habitat loss and fragmentation are known to reduce patch sizes and increase their isolation, consequently leading to modifications
in species richness and community structure. Calcareous grasslands are among the richest ecosystems in Europe for insect species.
About 10% (1,150 ha) of the total area of a calcareous ridge region (Calestienne, Belgium) and its butterfly community was
analysed over a timeframe of about 100 years. Since 1905 to present day (2005), the Calestienne region has undergone both
calcareous grassland loss and fragmentation: not only did calcareous grassland size decrease and isolation increase, but also,
the number of calcareous grassland patches within the landscape increased until 1965, and subsequently decreased, clearly
reflecting the effects of fragmentation. These processes have had a profound effect on the butterfly community: extinction
and rarefaction affected significantly more often specialist species, which means that generalist species are more and more
overrepresented. This ecological drift, i.e. the replacement of specialists by generalists in species assemblages is likely
to be a general effect of habitat loss and fragmentation on natural communities. 相似文献

Breast cancer is a major health problem as well as scientifically poorly understood. Our knowledge of breast cancer is however rapidly progressing in several directions. First, genomic studies are establishing a new molecular classification of breast cancers. Molecular subtypes have been identified and are being associated with the histoclinical forms of breast cancers. Second, genetic alterations are discovered and classified, generating new potential therapeutical targets. Third, mammary stem cells have been identified in the normal mammary epithelium. Their altered counterparts have been identified in tumors and are being characterized. These combined studies allow a new integrated cellular and molecular definition of breast cancers and a conceptual basis that will help the management of the disease. 相似文献

In this work, a quantitative kinetic model for investigating the heme-induced peroxidation of linoleic acid and its inhibition by two important dietary antioxidants, quercetin and alpha-tocopherol, is developed. The main conclusions of this work are: (1) The time dependence of the lipid hydroperoxide concentration is critically dependent on the rate constant for lipid hydroperoxide cleavage, initial fraction of lipid hydroperoxides among the pool of conjugated dienes, and rate of heme degradation. (2) The lipophilic antioxidant alpha-tocopherol acts as a chain-breaking antioxidant that quickly reduces 1-2 eq of lipid peroxyl radicals (inhibition of propagation), whereas the more hydrophilic antioxidant quercetin is only marginally chain-breaking but capable of reducing 4-5 eq of iron-oxo initiator (inhibition of initiation). (3) Based on comparisons between experimental peroxidation curves and simulated curves assuming additivity, it can be concluded that combinations of alpha-tocopherol and quercetin are generally synergistic. The kinetic analysis and HPLC titrations of the antioxidants both suggest that synergism mainly arises from a capacity of alpha-tocopherol to regenerate some quercetin oxidation products still endowed with a reducing activity. 相似文献

The Drosophila oocyte is a highly polarized cell. Secretion occurs towards restricted neighboring cells and asymmetric transport controls the localization of several mRNAs to distinct cortical compartments. Here, we describe a role for the Drosophila ortholog of the Rab6 GTPase, Drab6, in establishing cell polarity during oogenesis. We found that Drab6 localizes to Golgi and Golgi-derived membranes and interacts with BicD. We also provide evidence that Drab6 and BicD function together to ensure the correct delivery of secretory pathway components, such as the TGFalpha homolog Gurken, to the plasma membrane. Moreover, in the absence of Drab6, osk mRNA localization and the organization of microtubule plus-ends at the posterior of the oocyte were both severely affected. Our results point to a possible connection between Rab protein-mediated secretion, organization of the cytoskeleton and mRNA transport. 相似文献
