We studied four monogonont rotifers (Brachionus urceolaris, Floscularia ringens, Hexarthra mira, Notommata glyphura) using two different techniques of microscopy: (1) the presence of filamentous actin was examined using phalloidin-fluorescent labelled specimens and a confocal laser scanning microscope (CLSM); (2) external morphology was investigated using a scanning electron microscope (SEM). B. urceolaris, F. ringens, and N. glyphura showed similar patterns of muscle distribution: a set of longitudinal muscles acting as head and foot retractors, and a set of circular muscles. However, the size and distribution of circular muscles differed among these species. H. mira differed from the other species in that it lacked circular muscles but possessed strong muscles that extended into each arm. The study showed that using both CLSM and SEM provides better resolution of the anatomy and external morphology of rotifers than using one of these techniques alone. This can facilitate better understanding of the complicated anatomy of these animals.  相似文献

In recent years, it has become evident that lipid peroxidation is not only a mechanism for deterioration of alimentary oils and fats, but can occur even in living cells, both in pathological and physiological conditions. Through its aldehydic products, it can regulate several cellular processes, as proliferation, differentiation and apoptosis of normal and neoplastic cells. Protein kinase C (PKC) is a family of isoenzymes differently involved in cell response to injury and many studies describe their role as "stress sensors". Oxidative stress is strictly involved in the pathogenesis of chronic liver diseases including alcohol- or drug-induced hepatotoxicity, iron overload, hepatitis and hepatocarcinoma development, but molecular mechanisms are not really defined. A crucial role of PKC as a redox sensitive signaling molecule has been widely accepted.  相似文献

Siliceous sponges, one of the few animal groups involved in a biosilicification process, deposit hydrated silica in discrete skeletal elements called spicules. A multidisciplinary analysis of the structural features of the protein axial filaments inside the spicules of a number of marine sponges, belonging to two different classes (Demospongiae and Hexactinellida), is presented, together with a preliminary analysis of the biosilicification process. The study was carried out by a unique combination of techniques: fiber diffraction using synchrotron radiation, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), differential scanning calorimetric (DSC), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and molecular modeling. From a phylogenetic point of view, the main result is the structural difference between the dimension and packing of the protein units in the spicule filaments of the Demospongiae and the Hexactinellida species. Models of the protein organization in the spicule axial filaments, consistent with the various experimental evidences, are given. The three different species of demosponges analyzed have similar general structural features, but they differ in the degree of order. The structural information on the spicule axial filaments can help shed some light on the still unknown molecular mechanisms controlling biosilicification.  相似文献

This study used kinematics to investigate the integration between vision and olfaction during grasping movements. Participants were requested to smell an odorant and then grasp an object presented in central vision. The results indicate that if the target was small (e.g., a strawberry), the time and amplitude of maximum hand aperture were later and greater, respectively, when the odor evoked a larger object (e.g., an orange) than when the odor evoked an object of a similar size as the target or no odor was presented. Conversely, the time and amplitude of maximum hand aperture were earlier and reduced, respectively, when the target was large (e.g., a peach) and the odor evoked a smaller sized object (e.g., an almond) than when the odor evoked an object of a similar size as the target or no odor was presented. Taken together, these results support the evidence of cross-modal links between olfaction and vision and extend this notion to goal-directed actions.  相似文献
