OBJECTIVE: To test the hypothesis that a baby''s survival is related to the mother''s birth weight. DESIGN: Population based dataset for two generations. SETTING: Population registry in Norway. SUBJECTS: All birth records for women born in Norway since 1967 were linked to births during 1981-94, thereby forming 105104 mother-offspring units. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Perinatal mortality specific for weight for offspring in groups of maternal birth weight (with 500 g categories in both). RESULTS: A mother''s birth weight was strongly associated with the weight of her baby. Maternal birth weight was associated with perinatal survival of her baby only for mothers with birth weights under 2000 g. These mothers were more likely to lose a baby in the perinatal period (odds ratio 2.3, 95% confidence interval 1.4 to 3.7). Among mothers with a birth weight over 2000 g there was no overall association between mother''s weight and infant survival. There was, however, a strong interaction between mother''s birth weight, infant birth weight, and infant survival. Mortality among small babies was much higher for those whose mothers had been large at birth. For example, babies weighing 2500-2999 g had a threefold higher mortality if their mother''s birth weight had been high (> or = 4000 g) than if the mother had been small (2500-2999 g). CONCLUSION: Mothers who weighed less than 2000 g at birth have a higher risk of losing their own babies. For mothers who weighed > or = 2000 g their birth weight provides a benchmark for judging the growth of their offspring. EPR measurements on inside-out thylakoids revealed that salt-washing, known to inhibit oxygen evolution and release a 23 and a 16 kDa protein, induced a Signal IIf and decreased the EPR signal from state S2. Readdition of the released 23 kDa protein restored the oxygen evolution and decreased the Signal IIf, but did not relieve the decrease in the state S2 signal. It is suggested that salt-washing inhibits the electron transfer from the oxygen-evolving site to Z, the physiological donor to P680. In inhibited photosystem II units lacking Signal IIf, Z+ is rapidly reduced, possibly by a modified S-cycle unable to evolve oxygen. 相似文献

An increase in the superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity inStreptococcus lactis was observed when the cells were grown at increased oxygen partial pressures or exposed to hyperbaric oxygen tensions. The NADH-oxidase/NADH-peroxidase activities inS. lactis increased in galactose-grown cells when cultivated in air compared with N2/CO2. This effect did not occur when glucose was the carbon source; however, an increase in the activities of these enzymes was observed in oxygen atmosphere. The correlation between SOD, NADH-oxidase/NADH-peroxidase, and the metabolic pathways involved is discussed. The effect of manganese on the SOD activity is also considered. 相似文献

The activities of monoamine oxidase (MAO), cathechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT) and -aminobutyric acid transaminase (GABA-T) were measured in primary cultures from newborn rat cultivated from 6 different brain regions. These primary cultures contained mostly astroglial cells, evaluated by the presence of the glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAp, -albumin) and the S-100 protein. The enzyme activities in the corresponding brain areas from adult rat were also quantified. MAO activities were on the same level in 14-day old cultures and in adult rat brain homogenates, with significantly lower values in brain stem as compared to the other brain regions examined. COMT activities were on a higher level in the cultures than in adult rat brain homogenates. Astroglial cells from hippocampus were found to have the highest and those from brain stem the lowest COMT-activities. GABA-T activities were lower in the cultures than in adult rat homogenates. No significant differences were seen in the various astroglial cultures. Accumulation of [3H]dopamine and [3H]-aminobutyric acid (GABA) visualized by autoradiography showed only a slight uptake of dopamine in comparison with the uptake of GABA. It is concluded that astroglial cells in culture have enzymatic properties similar to those of astroglial cells in different brain regions of adult rat brain. Studies are in progress to evaluate if the regional heterogeneity observed among cultivated astroglial cells is affected by in vivo differentiation until cultivation and/or time in culture. 相似文献

The effects of post-treatments with caffeine on the frequencies of chromosomal aberrations induced by the trifunctional alkylating agent thiotepa were studied in human lymphocytes and in root tips of Vicia faba. In lymphocytes the frequency of aberrations induced in G0 or G1 was most strongly increased when the caffeine post-treatments were given during G2. In Vicia faba, on the other hand, the frequency of aberrations induced in early interphase was unaffected by post-treatments with caffeine during G2, but strongly increased when the root tips were exposed to caffeine during the S phase. 相似文献

The roles of rabbit liver cytochrome b5, epoxide hydrase and various forms of cytochrome P-450 in the NADPH-dependent metabolism of benzo(a)pyrene were examined. After incorporation of the purified enzymes into phospholipid vesicles, using the cholate gel filtration technique, the various types of cytochrome P-450 did exhibit different stereospecificities in the oxygenation of the substrate. Cytochrome P-450LM2 was found to efficiently convert benzo(a)pyrene in the presence of epoxide hydrase to 4,5-dihydroxy-4,5-dihydrobenzo(a)pyrene whereas cytochrome P-450LM4 primarily participated in the formation of 9,10-dihydroxy-9,10-dihydrobenzo(a)pyrene. By contrast, benzo(a)pyrene was not metabolized by cytochrome P-450LM3. Cytochrome b5 enhanced cytochrome P-450LM2-catalyzed oxygenations 5-fold, whereas cytochrome P-450LM4-dependent oxygenations proceeded at a 3 times higher rate when cytochrome b5 was present in the membrane. 相似文献

The lipids from the electric organ of the ray, Torpedo marmorata, have been isolated and characterized. The major lipids were cholesterol, choline phospholipids, ethanolamine phospholipids, and sphingomyelins. The major fatty acids of ethanolamine phospholipids were 18:1, 18:0, 22:6, and 20:4. More than 50% of the acids in choline phospholipids were 16:0. The sphingomyelins consisted of five major ceramide species, all with sphingosine and the fatty acids 14:0, 15:0, 16:0, 22:1, and 24:1. The fatty acid 15:0 was mostly branched (n-2), a fatty acid earlier identified in sphingomyelins of the rectal gland of spiny dogfish. All long-chain bases were dihydroxy bases with a small percentage of branched chains. Sulfatides (cerebroside sulfate) made up the largest glycolipid fraction. The polar moiety wase galactose-3-sulfate. The fatty acids were normal and 2-hydroxy; the homologue 24:1 was the most abundant in both types of fatty acids. Most fatty acids were higher homologues of mono-unsaturated acids, but normal 18:0 fatty acid was also found. The long-chain bases were both dihydroxy and trihydroxy, with very small amounts of branched chains. The two major ceramide species of sulfatides were sphingosine combined with normal and hydroxy 24:1 fatty acids, respectively. Smaller amounts of trihydroxy base (18:0) were found linked to hydroxy 24:1 fatty acid, but not to its normal homologue. The cerebrosides contained the two major species mentioned above but lacked the trihydroxy base-hydroxy fatty acid species. The ratio of the activity of Na+-K+-dependent ATPase (EC 3.6.1.3) and the concentration of sulfatides was similar to ratios found for other tissues with normal and increased Na+ and K+ transporting capacity. The responsiveness of decapsulated testes and isolated Leydig cell preparations from rats (30-80 days of age) to a constant dose of 3 ng hCG/2 ml was assessed by comparison of the production of testosterone and "total 17beta-hydroxy androgen" (17beta-HA). When testosterone secretion was used as the index of response, there was a marked increase in the production with age by decapsulated testes and also by equal numbers of Leydig cells. When 17beta-HA was taken as the response parameter this increase was only marginal for the decapsulated testes and there was an age-dependent decrease when expressed per 10(6) cells. These differences probably reflect changes in the metabolism of testosterone to 5alpha-reduced products with increasing age because 80% of androgen secreted at 30 days is 3alpha-androstanediol and 86% is secreted as testosterone at 80 days. We conclude that for studies on hCG responsiveness and the steroidogenic capacity of immature rat Leydig cells (a) testosterone is an inappropriate response parameter and (b) this response undergoes a decrease rather than an increase during prepubertal development. 相似文献

Stimulatory effects of the tumor promoter 12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol-13-acetate (TPA) on human T lymphocytes have been investigated. TPA was found to stimulate highly purified T cells (obtained by a three-step isolation procedure involving plastic adherence, nylon wool passage and Ig-anti-Ig column passage) in the absence of accessory cells (stimulation index of 5 to 10), whereas phytohemaglutinin (PHA) and concanavalin A (Con A) did not. This response was, however, increased by the addition of autologous adherent cells. Addition of TPA, but not adherent cells, induced T-cell proliferation in response to the nonmitogenic lectin, wheat germ agglutinin (WGA), while both adherent cells and TPA restored T-cell proliferation to mitogenic lectins such as PHA and Con A. Furthermore, TPA greatly increased the mixed-lymphocyte response of purified T cells to otherwise nonstimulating allogeneic cells such as T lymphocytes or tumor cells from some patients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia. These results suggest that TPA can directly act on human T cells to render them reactive to a variety of stimuli. 相似文献
