Climate change can affect marine and estuarine fish via alterations to their distributions, abundances, sizes, physiology and ecological interactions, threatening the provision of ecosystem goods and services. While we have an emerging understanding of such ecological impacts to fish, we know little about the potential influence of climate change on the provision of nutritional seafood to sustain human populations. In particular, the quantity, quality and/or taste of seafood may be altered by future environmental changes with implications for the economic viability of fisheries. In an orthogonal mesocosm experiment, we tested the influence of near‐future ocean warming and acidification on the growth, health and seafood quality of a recreationally and commercially important fish, yellowfin bream (Acanthopagrus australis). The growth of yellowfin bream significantly increased under near‐future temperature conditions (but not acidification), with little change in health (blood glucose and haematocrit) or tissue biochemistry and nutritional properties (fatty acids, lipids, macro‐ and micronutrients, moisture, ash and total N). Yellowfin bream appear to be highly resilient to predicted near‐future ocean climate change, which might be facilitated by their wide spatio‐temporal distribution across habitats and broad diet. Moreover, an increase in growth, but little change in tissue quality, suggests that near‐future ocean conditions will benefit fisheries and fishers that target yellowfin bream. The data reiterate the inherent resilience of yellowfin bream as an evolutionary consequence of their euryhaline status in often environmentally challenging habitats and imply their sustainable and viable fisheries into the future. We contend that widely distributed species that span large geographic areas and habitats can be “climate winners” by being resilient to the negative direct impacts of near‐future oceanic and estuarine climate change. 相似文献

The applicability of capillary zone electrophoresis (CZE) for analysis of cephalosporin antibiotics has been studied in bronchial secretion as highly viscous, thick and non-homogeneous samples. The lyophilization was found to be a simple but effective pretreatment of these samples to bring them into a form which is suitable for injection to CE capillary. We have earlier isolated a glucocorticoid-resistant, dedifferentiated rat hepatoma variant, the clone 2, which exhibited deficient stress activation of the major stress-inducible heat-shock protein hsp68.Multidrug-resistant variants were isolated from clone 2 cells using increasing concentrations of colchicine. The induction deficiency of hsp68 was maintained in the colchicine-resistant clone 2 cells grown for several months in the presence of 1 g/ml colchicine (termed ashighly multidrug-resistant variant) indicating that this heat-shock protein is not involved in the multidrug resistance. No alteration of the protein synthesis pattern was observed except the strong increase of the P-glycoprotein, which correlated with high level of corresponding mRNA. Stableheat-resistant variants of clone 2 were also isolated, which showed increaseddrug resistance to several drugs, i.e. they becamemoderately multidrug-resistant. This moderate multidrug resistance of the heat-resistant variants was further increased by stepwise selection with colchicine (highly multidrug-resistant heat-resistant variants). The levels of P-glycoprotein mRNA and protein were elevated both in the heat-resistant, non drug selected, moderately drug-resistant and in heatresistant, colchicine selected, highly drug-resistant variants. Decreased retention of antitumor drugs was observed in all multidrug-resistant variants indicating that P-glycoprotein was functional. Verapamil increased doxorubicin retention and cytotoxicity significantly. Our results showing that severely stressed hepatoma cells overexpressed the multidrug resistance gene(s) raise the possibility that the P-glycoprotein may participate in protection against enviromental stress such as heat.Abbreviations hsp

Encapsulating cells by polyelectrolyte complex coacervation can be accomplished at physiological temperature and buffer conditions. One of the oppositely charged polyelectrolytes in the microcapsule core can be collagen or any other natural extra-cellular matrices suitable for cellular support while the other polyelectrolyte forms the ultra-thin shell to ensure efficient mass transfer. These microcapsules with ultra-thin shell are difficult to produce in large quantities due to their fragility. In this study, electrostatic spraying technique was used to achieve a scalable production of one such type of microcapsules formed by complex coacervation between the cationic methylated collagen and anionic terpolymer of hydroxylethyl methacrylate, methyl methacrylate and methylacrylic acid (HEMA-MMA-MAA). It was found that the microcapsule sizes were dependent on several important operational parameters, such as the diameter of the spraying needle, the flow rate of the hepatocytes-collagen mixture and the voltage of the electrical field. The microcapsules with diameters of 200-800 microm and a narrow size distribution (standard deviation of 5-28%) were successfully produced. The above parameters also influenced the hepatocyte viability and functions. With a practical encapsulation rate of up to 55 ml/h per orifice required in bio-artificial liver-assisted device applications, we have produced large quantities of microcapsules maintaining comparable cell viability (>87%), mechanical stability and bio-functions to the manually extruded microcapsules. 相似文献
