Progress in decoding neural signals has enabled the development of interfaces that translate cortical brain activities into commands for operating robotic arms and other devices. The electrical stimulation of sensory areas provides a means to create artificial sensory information about the state of a device. Taken together, neural activity recording and microstimulation techniques allow us to embed a portion of the central nervous system within a closed-loop system, whose behavior emerges from the combined dynamical properties of its neural and artificial components. In this study we asked if it is possible to concurrently regulate this bidirectional brain-machine interaction so as to shape a desired dynamical behavior of the combined system. To this end, we followed a well-known biological pathway. In vertebrates, the communications between brain and limb mechanics are mediated by the spinal cord, which combines brain instructions with sensory information and organizes coordinated patterns of muscle forces driving the limbs along dynamically stable trajectories. We report the creation and testing of the first neural interface that emulates this sensory-motor interaction. The interface organizes a bidirectional communication between sensory and motor areas of the brain of anaesthetized rats and an external dynamical object with programmable properties. The system includes (a) a motor interface decoding signals from a motor cortical area, and (b) a sensory interface encoding the state of the external object into electrical stimuli to a somatosensory area. The interactions between brain activities and the state of the external object generate a family of trajectories converging upon a selected equilibrium point from arbitrary starting locations. Thus, the bidirectional interface establishes the possibility to specify not only a particular movement trajectory but an entire family of motions, which includes the prescribed reactions to unexpected perturbations.  相似文献

There is increasing awareness that estrogens may affect cell functions through the integration with a network of signaling pathways. The IGF system is a phylogenetically highly conserved axis that includes the insulin receptor (IR) and the insulin-like growth factor I receptor (IGF-IR) pathways, which are of crucial importance in the regulation of metabolism and cell growth in relationship to nutrient availability. Numerous studies nowadays document that estrogens cooperate with IGF system at multiple levels both in physiology and in disease. Several studies have focused on this bidirectional cross-talk in central nervous system, in mammary gland development and in cancer. Notably, cancer cells show frequent deregulation of the IGF system with overexpression of IR and/or IGF-IR and their ligands as well as frequent upregulation of the classical estrogen receptor (ER)α and the novel ER named GPER. Recent studies have, therefore, unraveled further mechanisms of cross-talk involving membrane initiated estrogen actions and the IGF system in cancer, that converge in the stimulation of pro-tumoral effects. These studies offer hope for new strategies aimed at the treatment of estrogen related cancers in order to prevent an estrogen-independent and more aggressive tumor progression.  相似文献

This research detects the most common words recurring in 326 adolescents' dream language. The analyzed dreams have been previously recorded and then transcribed. Grouping words, we obtained the frequency of the main parts of speech (nouns, verbs, adjectives and pronouns). Among the nouns, far more frequently represented are terms that refer to important objects of an affective relation. Other significant nouns relate to objects linked to both familial and extra-familial environments. Words related to family relations declined in frequency as age increased and were substituted by terms that refer to relations among friends and to the external world and its objects. Some of these results can be usefully compared with the conclusions derived from the application of other methods of content analysis. This method using dream language analysis could be applied to research concerning dream content, also through specific dictionaries (groups of words defined and classified in relation to a certain theme).  相似文献

This article reports the first study of the chemical composition, and antifungal and antiproliferative properties of the volatile extracts obtained by hydrodistillation of the flower heads and leaves of the traditional Kurdish medicinal plant Pterocephalus nestorianus Nábělek , collected in the wild. A total of 55 constituents, 43 of the flower heads’ oil (PFO) and 46 of the leaves’ oil (PLO), respectively, were identified by GC/MS, constituting 99.68% and 99.04% of the two oils, respectively. The oils were obtained in 0.15% and 0.10% yields (w/w), respectively, on air‐dried vegetable material. The prevalent constituents of the PFO were α‐terpineol (2.41%), α‐linalool (6.42%), 6,10,14‐trimethylpentadecan‐2‐one (2.59%), myristic acid (24.65%), and lauric acid (50.44%), while the major components of PLO were (E)‐hex‐2‐enal (2.26%), (E)‐hex‐2‐en‐1‐ol (2.04), myristic acid (34.03%), and lauric acid (50.35%). The two oils showed significant inhibitory and fungicidal activities against the medically important fungi Candida albicans, Candida tropicalis, Microsporum canis, and Trichophyton mentagrophytes, with minimum inhibitory concentration ranging from 0.7 to 3.3 mg/ml and minimum fungicidal concentration varying from 1.4 to 6.6 mg/ml. The antiproliferative activity of the two oils was assayed against one normal and six human tumor cell lines. Both oils showed selective cytotoxic activity, with IC50 values ranging from 1.4 to 3.3 μg/ml.  相似文献
