First results of a study on airborne sporomorps in Budapest,Hungary

The first results of an aerobiological study, with the help of a Burkard spore trap in Hungary, are reported. A pollen calendar of 1989 is presented. Out of the total identified sporomorphs, the most relevant 16 types of pollen and 10 of fungal spores are reported. We have pointed out, that in Budapest Ambrosia and Artemisia pollen and some fungal spores are particularly responsible for the long lasting allergies to pollen and spores in the autumn. The pollen frequencies and the symptom scores of patients of the Pediatrics (Semmelweis Medical School, Budapest) showed a good correlation. Weekly reports are published in a newspaper and in television.     

Selectivity of different biological products to the egg parasitoid Telenomus remus (Hymenoptera: Platygastridae)

The selectivity of five entomopathogens and a chemical insecticide (positive control) to pupae and adults of the egg parasitoid Telenomus remus (Nixon) was evaluated in the laboratory under controlled environmental conditions according to protocols established by the International Organization for Biological Control. Baculovirus anticarsia (Baculovirus AEE^®), Bacillus thuringiensis var. kurstaki (Thuricide^®), Bacillus thuringiensis var. aizawai (Agree^®), Beauveria bassiana (Boveril^®), Metarhizium anisopliae (Metarril^®) and Trichoderma harzianum (Trichodermil^®) are harmless to T. remus pupae, and adults. Thus, our results suggest that the insect control strategies applied here are compatible since entomopathogens were classified as harmless to T. remus in most examined cases and therefore facilitate a joint application to control different pests. Bacillus thuringiensis var. kurstaki (Dipel^®), despite being classified as slightly harmful in some of the evaluations, can still be considered compatible for use together with T. remus, especially when compared with chemical insecticides such as chlorpyrifos that might be considered harmful to the parasitoid survival.     

Rheological properties of cross-linked hyaluronan-gelatin hydrogels for tissue engineering

Hydrogels that mimic the natural extracellular matrix (ECM) are used in three-dimensional cell culture, cell therapy, and tissue engineering. A semi-synthetic ECM based on cross-linked hyaluronana offers experimental control of both composition and gel stiffness. The mechanical properties of the ECM in part determine the ultimate cell phenotype. We now describe a rheological study of synthetic ECM hydrogels with storage shear moduli that span three orders of magnitude, from 11 to 3 500 Pa, a range important for engineering of soft tissues. The concentration of the chemically modified HA and the cross-linking density were the main determinants of gel stiffness. Increase in the ratio of thiol-modified gelatin reduced gel stiffness by diluting the effective concentration of the HA component.     

Metal complexes of bovine lactoferrin inhibit in vitro replication of herpes simplex virus type 1 and 2

The inhibitory effect of bovine lactoferrin (BLf) saturated with ferric, manganese or zinc ions, on the infection of Vero cells by human herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV1) and 2 (HSV2) was investigated. Viral infectivity determined by intracellular antigen synthesis and plaque formation was efficiently inhibited by metal saturated lactoferrins in a dose-dependent manner. Effective BLf concentrations which reduced the infection by 50% ranged from 5.2 to 31 mug ml and were far below the cytotoxicity threshold. Fe BLf and Mn BLf exhibited selectivity indexes higher than Zn BLf and apoBLf for both viruses and the effect was mainly directed towards the early steps of infection. The slight viral inhibition shown by the citrate complexes of the different metals could indicate that the antiviral effect was not significantly influenced by Fe , Mn or Zn ions delivered by BLf into the cells. © Rapid Science 1998
