Sarcoplasmic reticulum (SR) membranes isolated from rabbit and lobster muscles have similar phospholipid classes, but they differ in plasmalogen content. The plasmalogenic species are mostly distributed among phosphatidylethanolamines (PE's) and make up about 62% of the total in rabbit SR and about 46% in lobster membranes. Lobster SR phospholipids contain large amounts of polyunsaturated fatty acids which are present in low amounts in rabbit membranes. The total unsaturated fatty acids of phosphatidylcholines (PC's) represent about 53% and 73% of the total fatty chains for rabbit and lobster SR, respectively. The values found for PE's were about 56% and 64%, respectively. Furthermore, lobster membranes contain significant amounts of PC and PE molecular species with unsaturated fatty acids in positions 1 and 2, whereas rabbit SR contain low amounts.  相似文献

The influence of leaves of Quercus suber L. and Eucalyptus globulus Labill. and needles of Pinus pinaster Ait. on a sandstone substrate was assessed through lysimetric studies during a ten-year period at a site in Central Portugal. The decomposition rate of Q. suber leaf litter was similar to that of E. globulus and higher than that of P. pinaster needle litter. The proportion of nitrogen released from the Q. suber leaf litter was higher than that lost from the other organic species. Such a release was proportional to the initial nitrogen content in the substrates. The concentrations of both NH4-N and NO3-N were much higher in leachates collected under Q. suber leaf litter than in those collected under the other organic substrates. A similar trend was found in the leachates collected under the mineral substrate influenced by the studied organic substrates. The leachate concentrations of mineral N (especially NO3-N) were higher from the mineral substrate under Q. suber leaf litter than from this organic substrate itself. The mineral substrate under leaf litter of E. globulus or needle litter of P. pinaster showed an increase in exchangeable base cations and pH values, and a decrease in extractable Al. Conversely, in the substrate with Q. suber leaf litter there was only a slight increase in exchangeable base cations and pH values, and a decrease in extractable Al. These results combined with those obtained in soils under E. globulus plantations indicate that changes found in these soils are due to soil and forest management practices rather than to the decomposition process of the respective of leaf litter.  相似文献

Amiodarone is an iodinated benzofuran derivative largely used as an antiarrhythmic. Owing to the sensitivity of heart tissue to radicals, amiodarone was assayed for putative effects on lipid peroxidation studied in liposomes of soybean phosphatidylcholine and of bovine heart mitochondrial lipids used as model systems. Lipid peroxidations were initiated with Fe2+/ascorbic acid, and with peroxyl radicals generated from the azocompounds, AAPH and AMVN. These assays were carried out by following the quenching of the fluorescent probe cis-parinaric acid and by monitoring oxygen consumption. It has been ascertained that amiodarone does not protect or potentiate significantly the lipid peroxidation both lipidic systems. To fully ascertain the neutral behaviour of amiodarone in the lipid peroxidation process, the degradation of phospholipid acyl chains has been checked by GLC. These data confirm that amiodarone does not protect or potentiate lipid peroxidation to a significant extent. It is concluded that the limited effects of amiodarone might be related only indirectly with the lipid peroxidation. It is possible that the drug causes limited conformational and biophysical alterations in membrane phospholipid bilayers that can affect the process of peroxidation. Therefore, it is concluded that the therapeutic effects and benefits as a heart antiarrhythmic agent are independent of lipid peroxidation processes. Furthermore, the interaction of the drug with lipid bilayers does not induce significant conformational perturbations that could significantly favour or depress the peroxidation process.  相似文献

Growth of potato tuber calli cells (non-green) is inhibited by 4-chloro-2-methylphenoxyacetic acid (MCPA) as a consequence of perturbation of membrane integrity. MCPA also depresses ATP content with simultaneous increase of ADP and AMP, i.e., the energy charge is severely compromised. Cell redox state is also affected by MCPA, as a function of concentration. Up to 60 μM, MCPA stimulates glutathione reductase and glutathione transferase, whereas superoxide dismutase and catalase activities are not affected. However, 120 μM MCPA inhibits all these activities. Cell death challenged by MCPA is putatively related to disturbance of membrane integrity responsible for mitochondrial uncoupling with decrease of the energy charge and subsequent loss of ions and metabolites.  相似文献

Aim The influence of the last glaciation on the shallow‐water marine malacofauna of the Azores Islands is reviewed. We test, for this fauna, the ‘Pleistocene temperature theory’ of J.C. Briggs, which hypothesizes that a (supposed) lack of endemics in the older (Azorean endemic) fauna resulted from extinctions caused by a severe drop in sea surface temperatures during the Pleistocene. Location Santa Maria Island, Azores, Portugal. Methods We compare the fossil mollusc fauna of Prainha, Praia do Calhau and Lagoinhas Pleistocene outcrops with the recent mollusc fauna of the Azores Islands. We dated the fossil fauna, using shells of Patella aspera Röding, 1798, by standard U/Th methodology at the GEOTOP laboratory (Université du Québec à Montreal, Canada). Results Dating of the shells of P. aspera indicates that the deposition of the lower unit of the Prainha outcrop corresponded to Marine Oxygen Isotope Substage 5e (MISS 5e). Not a single endemic Azorean species of mollusc that is present in the Pleistocene fossil record has since become extinct, and we found no signs of ‘mass extinctions’ in the littoral marine molluscs of the Azores. The only species that were extirpated from these islands were thermophilic molluscs and littoral bivalves living in fine sand. Main conclusions Our results do not support Briggs’‘Pleistocene temperature theory’. Nor did we find evidence supporting the hypothesis that most of the marine organisms now present in the Azores recolonized the islands after the last glacial maximum.  相似文献

The medial preoptic nucleus (MPN) and the sexually dimorphic nucleus of the preoptic area (SDN-POA) stand out as prominent sexually dimorphic cell groups of the rat brain. However, quantitative data on sex-related differences in these nuclei in the adult rat are confined to their volume. We have used stereological methods and Golgi-impregnated material to examine whether, in young adult rats, the sexual dimorphism in the volume of the MPN, including its divisions, and of the SDN-POA, reflect similar differences in the number and size of their neurons. We found that the total number of neurons in all MPN divisions is higher and the mean somatic volume larger in males than in females. In addition, the total dendritic length of MPN neurons is greater, but the dendritic spine density is smaller, in males than in females. Likewise, in the SDN-POA the total number and size of its neurons is greater in males than in females. The sex differences in all quantitative parameters evaluated accounted for the larger volume of the MPN and SDN-POA in males relative to females. In addition, the MPN neuropil also displays sex-related differences in its volume, and these differences closely match those detected for the volume of each MPN division. It deserves to be emphasised that the numerical density of neurons was the only parameter found to be significantly higher in females than in males in all MPN divisions and in the SDN-POA. Our results show that the MPN and the SDN-POA display sex differences in the volume, total number of neurons, and size of neuronal cell bodies and dendritic trees. Furthermore, they also indicate that the neuropil is critical for the establishment of sexual dimorphism in the size of the MPN.  相似文献
