Physical examinations were performed on 3991 bulls reared in subtropical (75%) and tropical (25%) Mozambique. A culling rate of 16.3% (651 sires) was found. The range of culling rate between farms varied from 3 to 44%. The main culling reasons were a) epididymitis, b) atrophy and/or hypoplasia, and c) testicular fibrosis (contributing to 30.4, 20.9, and 15.2%, respectively, of the culled bulls). Epididymitis-vaginitis (epivag) syndrome was considered the main reason for the high incidence of epididymitis and testicular fibrosis. A highly significant difference (P<0.001) in culling rate for Simmental (37.7%) and Brahman (13.1%) bulls was found. A more comprehensive investigation of culling rate of different breeds used in the country is needed, as well as a program for controlling epivag in the more affected areas. Examining the reproductive organs of the beef bulls in Mozambique before the breeding season is very important to improve fertility in the beef herds.  相似文献

Background  

The RNA interference (RNAi) pathway acts as an innate antiviral immune response in Aedes aegypti, modulating arbovirus infection of mosquitoes. Sindbis virus (SINV; family: Togaviridae, genus: Alphavirus) is an arbovirus that infects Ae. aegypti in the laboratory. SINV strain TR339 encounters a midgut escape barrier (MEB) during infection of Ae. aegypti. The nature of this barrier is not well understood. To investigate the role of the midgut as the central organ determining vector competence for arboviruses, we generated transgenic mosquitoes in which the RNAi pathway was impaired in midgut tissue of bloodfed females. We used these mosquitoes to reveal effects of RNAi impairment in the midgut on SINV replication, midgut infection and dissemination efficiencies, and mosquito longevity.  相似文献

Phospholipase Cepsilon (PLCepsilon) is a newly described effector of the small GTP-binding protein H-Ras. Utilizing H-Ras effector mutants, we show that mutants H-Ras(G12V/E37G) and H-Ras(G12V/D38N) suppressed integrin activation in an ERK-independent manner. H-Ras(G12V/D38N) specifically activated the PLCepsilon effector pathway and suppressed integrin activation. Inhibition of PLCepsilon activation with a kinase-dead PLCepsilon mutant prevented H-Ras(G12V/D38N) from suppressing integrin activation, and low level expression of H-Ras(G12V/D38N) could synergize with wild-type PLCepsilon to suppress integrins. In addition, knockdown of endogenous PLCepsilon with small interfering RNA blocked H-Ras(G12V/D38N)-mediated integrin suppression. Suppressing integrin function with the H-Ras(G12V/D38N) mutant reduced cell adhesion to von Willebrand factor and fibronectin; this reduction in cell adhesion was blocked by coexpression of the kinase-dead PLCepsilon mutant. These results show that H-Ras suppresses integrin affinity via independent Raf and PLCepsilon signaling pathways and demonstrate a new physiological function for PLCepsilon in the regulation of integrin activation.  相似文献

Here, we report the first complete genome sequence of Actinobacillus suis, an important opportunistic pathogen of swine. By comparing the genome sequence of A. suis with those of other members of the family Pasteurellaceae, we hope to better understand the role of these organisms in health and disease in swine.  相似文献
