Variation among adults reflects variation in basic developmental processes, such as cell division rate. Partitioning the variation into its developmental components would be a major step in understanding evolutionary constraints, but is far from being achieved for any character. In this paper, we examine population variation in the feather tip, a useful structure to study because the history of development is recorded in the adult form. Our goal is to document the variability, and provide a developmentally based explanation for the level of variation observed. Using feathers collected from chicks of a small warbler, we partition population variation into variation attributed to accidents of development (through a consideration of fluctuating asymmetry), and among- and within-family components. Population variation in the earliest formed part of the feather is high (the coefficient of variation is c. 30%); population variation in later formed parts of the feather is lower. The among-individual and developmental noise components are both reduced in later formed parts, but there are differences in the way the two components are associated among the feather parts. The early and later formed parts are highly integrated at the among-individual level (correlations ≈ 1.0) but not at the developmental noise level (correlations ≈ 0.5). This suggests that at least two basic developmental processes are involved in determining the length of the various feather parts. We review feather development and pattern formation models to demonstrate that at least two developmental processes are indeed involved in feather growth. We show how these processes could interact to achieve the relative invariance in the later formed parts of the feather. 相似文献

Vanillyl alcohol oxidase (VAO) from Penicillium simplicissimum catalyzes the enantioselective hydroxylation of 4-ethylphenol, 4-propylphenol, and 2-methoxy-4-propylphenol into 1-(4'-hydroxyphenyl)ethanol, 1-(4'-hydroxyphenyl)propanol, and 1-(4'-hydroxy-3'-methoxyphenyl)propanol, respectively, with an ee of 94% for the R enantiomer. The stereochemical outcome of the reactions was established by comparing the chiral GC retention times of the products to those of chiral alcohols obtained by the action of the lipases from Candida antarctica and Pseudomonas cepacia. Isotope labeling experiments revealed that the oxygen atom incorporated into the alcoholic products is derived from water. During the VAO-mediated conversion of 4-ethylphenol/4-propylphenol, 4-vinylphenol/4-propenylphenol are formed as side products. With 2-methoxy-4-propylphenol as a substrate, this competing side reaction is nearly abolished, resulting in less than 1% of the vinylic product, isoeugenol. Life history theory concerns the scheduling of births and the level of parental investment in each offspring. In most human societies the inheritance of wealth is an important part of parental investment. Patterns of wealth inheritance and other reproductive decisions, such as family size, would be expected to influence each other. Here I present an adaptive model of human reproductive decision-making, using a state-dependent dynamic model. Two decisions made by parents are considered: when to have another baby, and thus the pattern of reproduction through life; and how to allocate resources between children at the end of the parents'' life. Optimal decision rules are those that maximize the number of grandchildren. Decisions are assumed to depend on the state of the parent, which is described at any time by two variables: number of living sons, and wealth. The dynamics of the model are based on a traditional African pastoralist system, but it is general enough to approximate to any means of subsistence where an increase in the amount of wealth owned increases the capacity for future production of resources. The model is used to show that, in the unpredictable environment of a traditional pastoralist society, high fertility and a biasing of wealth inheritance to a small number of children are frequently optimal. Most such societies are now undergoing a transition to lower fertility, known as the demographic transition. The effects on fertility and wealth inheritance strategies of reducing mortality risks, reducing the unpredictability of the environment and increasing the costs of raising children are explored. Reducing mortality has little effect on completed family sizes of living children or on the wealth they inherit. Increasing the costs of raising children decreases optimal fertility and increases the inheritance left to each child at each level of wealth, and has the potential to reduce fertility to very low levels. The results offer an explanation for why wealthy families are frequently also those with the smallest number of children in heterogeneous, post-transition societies. 相似文献

The consequences of different measures of biotic diversity for the selection of priority sites for conservation were investigated using a dataset on Afrotropical antelopes. Site networks were selected using species richness, taxonomic diversity and restricted-range diversity as selection criteria. Restricted-range diversity was the most efficient criterion at representing all the species in the dataset. However when only a few sites could be conserved (insufficient to include all species) restricted-range diversity was relatively poor at representing absolute numbers of species and also taxonomic diversity. Use of unweighted species richness rather than a taxonomically weighted score did not significantly reduce the amount of taxonomic diversity represented. As expected an iterative selection of sites was considerably more efficient at representing all aspects of diversity than selection of the top-scoring sites. However the efficiency of an iterative selection procedure was reduced when some areas were already part of the reserve network. Since none of the criteria for selecting reserves maximizes all aspects of biodiversity under all circumstances, it is necessary to be clear about the objectives of a reserve network when deciding on a method for site selection. 相似文献

Hypotheses for the evolution of human female life-history characteristics have often focused on the social nature of human societies, which allows women to share the burden of childcare and provisioning amongst other members of their kin group. We test the hypothesis that child health and survival probabilities will be improved by the presence of kin using a longitudinal database from rural Gambia. We find that the only kin to improve the nutritional status of children significantly (apart from mothers) are maternal grandmothers, and that this is reflected in higher survival probabilities for children with living maternal grandmothers. There is also evidence that the reproductive status of the maternal grandmother influences child nutrition, with young children being taller in the presence of non-reproductive grandmothers than grandmothers who are still reproductively active. Antibodies to citrullinated proteins (anti-cyclic-citrullinated peptide [anti-CCP] antibodies) are highly specific for rheumatoid
arthritis (RA) and precede the onset of disease symptoms, indicating a pathogenetic role for these antibodies in RA. We recently
showed that distinct genetic risk factors are associated with either anti-CCP-positive disease or anti-CCP-negative disease.
These data are important as they indicate that distinct pathogenic mechanisms are underlying anti-CCP-positive disease or
anti-CCP-negative disease. Likewise, these observations raise the question of whether anti-CCP-positive RA and anti-CCP-negative
RA are clinically different disease entities. We therefore investigated whether RA patients with anti-CCP antibodies have
a different clinical presentation and disease course compared with patients without these autoantibodies. In a cohort of 454
incident patients with RA, 228 patients were anti-CCP-positive and 226 patients were anti-CCP-negative. The early symptoms,
tender and swollen joint count, and C-reactive protein level at inclusion, as well as the swollen joint count and radiological
destruction during 4 years of follow-up, were compared for the two groups. There were no differences in morning stiffness,
type, location and distribution of early symptoms, patients' rated disease activity and C-reactive protein at inclusion between
RA patients with and without anti-CCP antibodies. The mean tender and swollen joint count for the different joints at inclusion
was similar. At follow-up, patients with anti-CCP antibodies had more swollen joints and more severe radiological destruction.
Nevertheless, the distribution of affected joints, for swelling, bone erosions and joint space narrowing, was similar. In
conclusion, the phenotype of RA patients with or without anti-CCP antibodies is similar with respect to clinical presentation
