Song learning has evolved within several avian groups. Although its evolutionary advantage is not clear, it has been proposed that song learning may be advantageous in allowing birds to adapt their songs to the local acoustic environment. To test this hypothesis, we analysed patterns of song adjustment to noisy environments and explored their possible link to song learning. Bird vocalizations can be masked by low‐frequency noise, and birds respond to this by singing higher‐pitched songs. Most reports of this strategy involve oscines, a group of birds with learning‐based song variability, and it is doubtful whether species that lack song learning (e.g. suboscines) can adjust their songs to noisy environments. We address this question by comparing the degree of song adjustment to noise in a large sample of oscines (17 populations, 14 species) and suboscines (11 populations, 7 species), recorded in Brazil (Manaus, Brasilia and Curitiba) and Mexico City. We found a significantly stronger association between minimum song frequency and noise levels (effect size) in oscines than in suboscines, suggesting a tighter match in oscines between song transmission capacity and ambient acoustics. Suboscines may be more vulnerable to acoustic pollution than oscines and thus less capable of colonizing cities or acoustically novel habitats. Additionally, we found that species whose song frequency was more divergent between populations showed tighter noise–song frequency associations. Our results suggest that song learning and/or song plasticity allows adaptation to new habitats and that this selective advantage may be linked to the evolution of song learning and plasticity.  相似文献

Recent debate has highlighted the importance of estimating both the strength of sexual selection on phenotypic traits, and the opportunity for sexual selection. We describe seasonal fluctuations in mating dynamics of Leptinotarsa undecimlineata (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae). We compared several estimates of the opportunity for, and the strength of, sexual selection and male precopulatory competition over the reproductive season. First, using a null model, we suggest that the ratio between observed values of the opportunity for sexual selections and their expected value under random mating results in unbiased estimates of the actual nonrandom mating behavior of the population. Second, we found that estimates for the whole reproductive season often misrepresent the actual value at any given time period. Third, mating differentials on male size and mobility, frequency of male fighting and three estimates of the opportunity for sexual selection provide contrasting but complementary information. More intense sexual selection associated to male mobility, but not to male size, was observed in periods with high opportunity for sexual selection and high frequency of male fights. Fourth, based on parameters of spatial and temporal aggregation of female receptivity, we describe the mating system of L. undecimlineata as a scramble mating polygyny in which the opportunity for sexual selection varies widely throughout the season, but the strength of sexual selection on male size remains fairly weak, while male mobility inversely covaries with mating success. We suggest that different estimates for the opportunity for, and intensity of, sexual selection should be applied in order to discriminate how different behavioral and demographic factors shape the reproductive dynamic of populations.  相似文献

Bioactive natural products are a potential source of new pharmaceuticals since they offer new modes of action and more specific activities. The use of derivatization also enables the optimal structure for their biological activity to be determined. In this study several epoxycurcuphenol derivatives were synthesized. The substitution pattern on the aromatic and oxirane rings was varied along with that at the benzylic position and the length of the side chain was altered. These changes were made in order to gain a deeper understanding of the structural requirements for activity. The biological activities of these compounds were evaluated on the human leukemia cell line Jurkat using an antiproliferative assay. The activity results and structural requirements are discussed.  相似文献

Bipolar spindle assembly critically depends on the microtubule plus‐end‐directed motor Eg5 that binds antiparallel microtubules and slides them in opposite directions. As such, Eg5 can produce the necessary outward force within the spindle that drives centrosome separation and inhibition of this antiparallel sliding activity results in the formation of monopolar spindles. Here, we show that upon depletion of the minus‐end‐directed motor dynein, or the dynein‐binding protein Lis1, bipolar spindles can form in human cells with substantially less Eg5 activity, suggesting that dynein and Lis1 produce an inward force that counteracts the Eg5‐dependent outward force. Interestingly, we also observe restoration of spindle bipolarity upon depletion of the microtubule plus‐end‐tracking protein CLIP‐170. This function of CLIP‐170 in spindle bipolarity seems to be mediated through its interaction with dynein, as loss of CLIP‐115, a highly homologous protein that lacks the dynein–dynactin interaction domain, does not restore spindle bipolarity. Taken together, these results suggest that complexes of dynein, Lis1 and CLIP‐170 crosslink and slide microtubules within the spindle, thereby producing an inward force that pulls centrosomes together.  相似文献

Goodpasture-antigen binding protein (GPBP) is a nonconventional Ser/Thr kinase for basement membrane type IV collagen. Various studies have questioned these findings and proposed that GPBP serves as transporter of ceramide between the endoplasmic reticulum and the Golgi apparatus. Here we show that cells expressed at least two GPBP isoforms resulting from canonical (77-kDa) and noncanonical (91-kDa) mRNA translation initiation. The 77-kDa polypeptide interacted with type IV collagen and localized as a soluble form in the extracellular compartment. The 91-kDa polypeptide and its derived 120-kDa polypeptide associated with cellular membranes and regulated the extracellular levels of the 77-kDa polypeptide. A short motif containing two phenylalanines in an acidic tract and the 26-residue Ser-rich region were required for efficient 77-kDa polypeptide secretion. Removal of the 26-residue Ser-rich region by alternative exon splicing rendered the protein cytosolic and sensitive to the reduction of sphingomyelin cellular levels. These and previous data implicate GPBPs in a multicompartmental program for protein secretion (i.e. type IV collagen) that includes: 1) phosphorylation and regulation of protein molecular/supramolecular organization and 2) interorganelle ceramide trafficking and regulation of protein cargo transport to the plasma membrane.  相似文献

The nature of spatial autocorrelation of biota may reveal much about underlying ecological and biological factors responsible for producing those patterns, especially dispersal processes (drift, adult flight, etc.). We report here on assemblage‐level autocorrelation in the benthic‐invertebrate assemblages (retained in sieves of 300 µm mesh) of riffles in two adjacent, relatively pristine rivers in southeastern Victoria, Australia (40‐km reaches of the Wellington and Wonnangatta Rivers). These are related to patterns of autocorrelation in physical and catchment conditions (‘environmental variables’) in the vicinity of the sampling points. Both the invertebrate assemblages and environmental variables were autocorrelated at small scales (= 8 km) in the Wellington River in one of the sampling years (1996). Dissimilarities of invertebrate assemblages were correlated with dissimilarities of environmental variables in both sampling years (1996 and 1997) in that river. Environmental variables were autocorrelated in the Wonnangatta River, but this was not expressed as autocorrelation in the assemblages of invertebrates, which were not autocorrelated at any scale studied. Individual environmental variables showed different spatial patterns between the two rivers. These results suggest that individual rivers have their own idiosyncratic patterns and one cannot assume that even similar, geographically adjacent rivers will have the same patterns, which is a difficulty for ecological assessment and restoration.  相似文献

We investigated multiple paternity and sperm precedence in the Amarillo fish, Girardinichthys multiradiatus (Goodeidae). We allowed females to mate with two different-sized males consecutively and assessed the paternity of the ensuing broods using allozyme electrophoresis. We presented one-half of the females the larger, and the other half the smaller, male first. Allozyme variation among individuals was low, yielding conservative estimates of multiple paternity. Half the broods were of mixed paternity, but one male always sired more than 70% of the embryos in each brood. The proportion of the brood sired was not related to mating sequence, but when we classified males by relative size, the larger male of each pair usually fathered greater proportions of offspring than the smaller male. This association disappeared when we used the actual size of the males in the analysis. Instead, for any pair of males, the difference in number of offspring sired was correlated to differences in the rate of courtship displays, rather than size differences, suggesting that courtship intensity is a better predictor of paternity than male size. Within a pair, the larger male usually displayed more than the smaller one, but there was no correlation between male size and display rate across all males. Parsimony suggests a correlation between courtship rate and sperm production, but we cannot rule out the possibility that females allocate paternity according to the relative merits of the males.  相似文献

The accumulation of carnitine was measured in cerebral cortex neurons isolated from adult rat brain. This process was found to be lowered by 40% after preincubation with ouabain and with SH-group reagents (N-ethylmaleimide and mersalyl). The initial velocity of carnitine transport was found to be inhibited by 4-aminobutyrate (GABA) in a competitive way (Ki = 20.9 +/- 2.4 mM). However, of various inhibitors of GABA transporters, only nipecotic acid and very high concentrations of 1-[2-([(diphenylmethylene)amino]oxy)ethyl]-1,2,5,6-tetrahydro-3-pyridinecarboxylic acid hydrochloride (NO-711) acid decreased carnitine accumulation while betaine, taurine and beta-alanine had no effect. The GABA transporters expressed in Xenopus laevis oocytes did not transport carnitine. Moreover, carnitine was not observed to diminish the accumulation of GABA in cerebral cortex neurons, which further excluded a possible involvement of the GABA transporter GAT1 in the process of carnitine accumulation, despite the expression of this protein in the cells under study. The absence of carnitine transporter OCTN2 in rat cerebral cortex neurons (K. A. Na?ecz, D. Dymna, J. E. Mroczkowska, A. Bro?r, S. Bro?r, M. J. Na?ecz and R. Cecchelli, unpublished results), together with the insensitivity of carnitine accumulation towards betaines, implies that a novel transporting protein is present in these cells.  相似文献
