1. Species invasions are often linked to reductions in biodiversity, and competitive superiority is often cited as the main reason for the success of an invasive species. Although invaded ecosystems are often examined, few have studied areas in which an invasive species has failed to successfully invade. 2. The western flower thrips, Frankliniella occidentalis (Pergande) (Thysanoptera: Thripidae), is a damaging pest and tospovirus vector that has invaded most of the world, and competitive superiority is considered one of the main reasons for this species' success. 3. However, a recent study demonstrated that competition between larval F. occidentalis and a native thrips species may be limiting F. occidentalis abundance in much of the eastern United States. Frankliniella occidentalis also has a limited abundance in central and southern Florida, which is dominated by the endemic F. bispinosa (Morgan). The potential for interspecific competition to limit F. occidentalis abundance in Florida was assessed. 4. The effects of competition between F. occidentalis and F. bispinosa on adult reproduction on a common host (Capsicum annuum L.) were quantified, using a response surface experimental design and a combination of linear and non‐linear competition models. 5. Evidence of symmetric competition between these thrips species was found, but contrary to expectations, F. occidentalis reproduced more in dense interspecific populations than F. bispinosa. These results suggest that, unlike most of the eastern US, interspecific competition is not important in limiting F. occidentalis abundance in central and southern Florida. 相似文献

Daily samples between 1964 and 1991 from suction traps throughout Great Britain were used to study the migration phenologies of five aphid species: Brachycaudus helichrysi, Elatobium abietinum, Metopolophium dirhodum, Myzus persicae and Sitobion avenae, and their relationship with temperature. Regression relationships have been established between characteristics of aphid phenology and temperature, latitude and longitude for each species. There were differences between species in the period for which temperature was most strongly associated with aphid phenology. The study indicates that temperature, especially winter temperature, is the dominant factor affecting aphid phenology, for all five species. A 1 °C increase in average winter temperature advanced the migration phenology by 4–19 days depending on species. Effects of temperature on the aphid phenology are similar between holocyclic and anholocyclic species, unlike the effects of temperature on date of first flight record which have been previously shown to be important only in anholocyclic species. 相似文献

A possible requirement for RNA and protein synthesis duringcell elongation of intact seedling tissue was studied usingthe soybean seedling foot with the elongating zone being delineatedby India ink marks at 2 and 7 mm back of the root tip. In contrastto most excised plant tissues, there was marked net synthesisof RNA and protein during cell elongation of the intact root.AD and CH were potent inhibitors of cell elongation in the soybeanroot. CH essentially eliminated protein synthesis, whether measuredby net accumulation of protein or by 14C-leiicine incorporation,while completely inhibiting cell elongation after a short lag.AD, on the other hand, only partially inhibited protein synthesiswhile causing almost total inhibition of cell elongation aftera lag. The capacity of the tissue to synthesize protein in thepresence of AD was correlated with the maintenance of functionalpolyribosomes, thus suggestive that m-RNA associated with theregulation of cell elongation is more unstable (i.e., a shortermean life) than total root m-RNA. FU did not inhibit cell elongation,protein synthesis or the level of functional polyribosomes.The requirement for RNA synthesis during cell elongation ofthe seedling root, as in excised plant tissues, appears to berestricted to the AMPrich species of RNA presumed to be m-RNA.

Fishes display a variety of anatomical relationships betweenbrain and pituitary to a degree unique among vertebrates. Thisgroup is pivotal for understanding evolution of functions ofhypophysiotropic peptides. We review information concerningoccurrences, distributions and physiological activities of threeidentified peptides in fish brain, and biological propertiesof fish brain extracts. Thyrotropin releasing hormone may bepresent universally in piscine central nervous tissue; however,this peptide has not been clearly demonstrated to have hypophysiotropicactivity in fishes. Somatostatin also has been shown to occurin fish brains; studies of actions of this substance are virtuallyabsent. Gonadotropin releasing hormone is apparently of broadoccurrence in fishes; its hypophysiotropic activity is wellestablished for several teleostean species. Anatomical relationshipsbetween brain and pituitary are particularly varied among elasmobranchs.Investigations involving additional elasmobranch representatives,as well as other fishes, are needed before generalizations canbe made. Widespread extrahypothalamic distribution of hypophysiotropicpeptides in lower vertebrates and neurotransmitter (or related)functions of neurones containing these peptides provide a basisfor proposals concerning evolution of hypothalamic control ofthe pituitary gland. 相似文献

Summary Previous studies have shown that spatiotemporal regulation of extracellular matrix (ECM) by proteinases is implicated in the initial step of regeneration. In amphibian regeneration, the up-regulation of proteinases such as metalloproteinases (MMPs) and cathepsin D, and proteinase-related proteins such as proteinase tissue inhibitors and activators has been demonstrated. Since the earthworm could provide a unique and valuable model to investigate the mechanism of regeneration, we studied the developmental change in proteinase expression during earthworm tail regeneration. Zymographic analysis revealed that proteinase activities began to increase within 1 h after amputation and reached a maximum at 7 days post-amputation. This peak in activity was approximately 22-fold greater than the unamputated controls. Thereafter, the proteinase activities tended to decrease followed by another peak at 30 days before returning to control levels. At least four types of proteinase were distinguishable at 7 and 30 days post-amputation, with molecular weights of 25, 28, 38, and 44 kDa, respectively. All proteinase activities were strongly inhibited by addition of phenylmethylsulfonyl fluoride (PMSF) and aprotinin, specific inhibitors for serine proteinase. Pepstatin A, E-64, iodoacetamide and a metal ion-free medium were not effective inhibitors, indicating that proteinases expressed during earthworm tail regeneration would be serine proteinases. In addition, we were able to detect two types of plasminogen activator (PA) with molecular weights of 40 and 47 kDa, respectively. PA activities were predominantly expressed at 1, 5, and 25 days post-amputation, which preceded two peaks of serine proteinase activities appearing at approximately 7 and 30 days after amputation, respectively. The European green crab Carcinus maenas is one of the world's most successful aquatic invaders, having established populations on every continent with temperate shores. Here we describe patterns of genetic diversity across both the native and introduced ranges of C. maenas and its sister species, C. aestuarii, including all known non‐native populations. The global data set includes sequences from the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I gene, as well as multilocus genotype data from nine polymorphic nuclear microsatellite loci. Combined phylogeographic and population genetic analyses clarify the global colonization history of C. maenas, providing evidence of multiple invasions to Atlantic North America and South Africa, secondary invasions to the northeastern Pacific, Tasmania, and Argentina, and a strong likelihood of C. maenas × C. aestuarii hybrids in South Africa and Japan. Successful C. maenas invasions vary broadly in the degree to which they retain genetic diversity, although populations with the least variation typically derive from secondary invasions or from introductions that occurred more than 100 years ago. 相似文献

Phenylalanyl-tRNA synthetase and phenylalanine ammonia-lyase activities were demonstrated in partially purified extracts of pine (Pinus elliottii) suspension cultures. The optimum pH for the phenylalanyl-tRNA synthetase reaction was 7.5 and the optimum ATP and Mg2+ concentrations were 1.0 and 15 mM respectively. Pine, calf liver and yeast tRNA were inadequate substitutes for pea tRNA in the synthetase reaction mixtures. The optimum pH for the phenylalanine ammonia-lyase reaction was 9.0. The Km for phenylalanine was approximately 6.6 × 10?5M. The activity of both enzymes in the partially purified extracts was unstable on storage. 相似文献

The effects of kinetin on growth and RNA metabolism in excisedsoybean hypocotyl were investigated, and compared to the effectsof 5-fluorouracil. Kinetin inhibits auxin-induced growth, butnot control growth. RNA synthesis is also inhibited by kinetin,but in a differential fashion. Ribosomal RNA synthesis is almostcompletely inhibited, while TB-RNA synthesis is partially inhibited.D-RNA synthesis is apparently not affected. Base compositionanalysis of these fractions of RNA was carried out. The implicationsfor RNA-mediated auxin-induced growth are discussed.
