1. We hypothesised that, for weed biological control, using species that feed as both adults and larvae would be advantageous. Here, we test the impacts of adult and larval feeding of Larinus minutus (Col.: Curculionidae), a successful biological control agent of diffuse knapweed, Centaurea diffusa (Asteraceae), in British Columbia, Canada. 2. At one site, the observations of the present study showed that the intensity of adult weevil feeding did not predict the level of larval attack. Experiments found no evidence for plant‐mediated competition between the life‐history stages. 3. At two sites and in two years, experimental manipulations of adult and/or larval feeding damage were conducted and plant performance measured. Neither antagonistic nor synergistic interactions occurred, but at each of the two sites a different life‐history stage was responsible for reduction in the number of seeds produced by the plants. 4. Although one of the two different feeding modes was redundant at each site, the ability of adults and larvae to reduce plant performance in different areas makes the species effective in a wider range of environments.  相似文献

SYNOPSIS. Naturally occurring populations of the monarch butterfly, Danaus plexippus (L.) and the Florida queen butterfly D. gilippus berenice Cramer were found infected with Ophryocystis elektroscirrha sp. n. This neogregarine pathogen infects the hypodermal tissue, remains in micronclear schizogony until after pupation of the host, and then rapidly completes morphogenesis in the tissue that becomes the scales of the adult butterfly. The adult thus carries the spores externally; no internal infection was detected. The pathogen is unique in the genus Ophryocystis because: other species have all been reported from the Malphigian tubules of Coleoptera; no pseudopodial attachments of schizonts to host tissue were seen; the merozoites were motile; the cystic membrane surrounding the zygote was tenuous, and the sporont developed with no apparent membrane other than the spore wall: and the spore wall appeared amber in transmitted light when morphogenesis was completed.  相似文献

Cytochrome c reducing substance (CRS), a redox substance discoveredin photoreactive lamellar fragments, was purified by Sephadexcolumn chromatography. Chromatographic behaviours of CRS ofAnabaena and spinach were essentially the same. Purified CRSof Anabaena showed an absorption spectrum having one absorptionmaximum around 260 mµ. The absorption peak disappearedon addition of excess amount of borohydride. Similar absorptionchange on borohydride addition was observed with spinach CRSpreparation. Purified preparations of Anabaena and spinach CRS supportedphotophosphorylation in spinach broken chloroplasts. 采用80%丙酮提取物的水萃取部位,利用凝胶、MCI、反相碳18、及 Toyopearl Butyl-650C 柱色谱进行分离纯化得到7个黄酮和3个苯乙醇苷类化合物。根据化合物的波谱数据分析鉴定为槲皮素(1)、槲皮苷(2)、异懈皮苷(3)、芦丁(4)、异牡荆素(5)、牡荆素(6)、木犀草素-7-O-α-L-鼠李糖(1→6)-β-D-葡萄糖苷(7)、2-phenethylβ-D-glucoside(8)、icariside D1(9)、2-苯乙基-D-芸香甙(10)。其中化合物1-3、5-6、8-10为首次从本属植物中分离得到。  相似文献
