Rates of methanogenesis and methanotrophy in deep-sea sediments   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3  
We use the carbon isotopic composition (δ13C) of the dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) of pore fluids from Leg 175 of the Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) along the West African Margin to quantify rates of methane production (methanogenesis) and destruction via oxidation (methanotrophy) in deep‐sea sediments. Results from a model of diffusion and reaction in the sedimentary column show that anaerobic methane oxidation (AOM) occurs in the transition zone between the presence of sulfate and methane, and methanogenesis occurs below these depths in a narrow confined zone that ends at about 250 m below the sea‐sediments surface in all sediment profiles. Our model suggests that the rates of methanogenesis and AOM range between 6 · 10−8 and 1 · 10−10 mol cm−3 year−1 at all sites, with higher rates at sites where sulfate is depleted in shallower depths. Our AOM rates agree with those based solely on sulfate concentration profiles, but are much lower than those calculated from experiments of sulfate reduction through AOM done under laboratory conditions. At sites where the total organic carbon (TOC) is less than 5% of the total sediment, we calculate that AOM is the main pathway for sulfate reduction. We calculate that higher rates of AOM are associated with increased recrystallization rates of carbonate minerals. We do not find a correlation between methanogenesis rates and the content of carbonate or TOC in the sediments, porosity, sedimentation rate, or the C:N ratio, and the cause of lack of methanogenesis below a certain depth is not clear. There does, however, appear to be an association between the rates of methanogenesis and the location of the site in the upwelling system, suggesting that some variable such as the type of the organic matter or the nature of the microbiological community may be important.  相似文献

Abstract.  1. Few entomological studies include soil-dwelling insects in mainstream ecological theory, for example the preference–performance debate. The preference–performance hypothesis predicts that when insect herbivores have offspring with limited capacity to relocate in relation to a host plant, there is a strong selection pressure for the adult to oviposit on plants that will maximise offspring performance.
2. This paper discusses the proposition that insect herbivores that live above ground, but have soil-dwelling offspring, should be included in the preference–performance debate. Twelve relevant studies were reviewed to assess the potential for including soil insects in this framework, before presenting a preliminary case study using the clover root weevil ( Sitona lepidus ) and its host plant, white clover ( Trifolium repens ).
3. Maternal S. lepidus preferentially oviposited on T. repens plants that had rhizobial root nodules (which enhance offspring performance) rather than T. repens plants without nodules, despite plants having similar foliar nutritional quality. This suggests that adult behaviour above ground was influenced by below-ground host-plant quality.
4. A conceptual model is presented to describe how information about the suitability for offspring below ground could underpin oviposition behaviour of parental insects living above ground, via plant- and soil-mediated semiochemicals. These interactions between genetically related, but spatially separated, insect herbivores raise important evolutionary questions such as how induced plant responses above ground affect offspring living below ground and vice versa.  相似文献

Biomass and soil carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) were measured in a replicated trial after afforestation of a New Zealand upland subhumid low-productivity grassland with four tree stockings, including an unplanted control, of Pinus nigra. Total biomass accumulation of P. nigra in the cool, dry and N-limited environment was low, ranging from 10 to 20 Mg ha−1 dry weight at age 10. Carbon and N accumulation in above- and belowground tree biomass ranged between 5–10 and 0.03–0.07 Mg ha−1, respectively. Soil C, N and bulk density were measured 5 and 10 years after the trees were planted. Soil samples taken at year 5 from between tree rows spaced 5 m apart were considered to be representative of grassland not affected by afforestation. Co-variance analysis showed that, at year 10, soil C and N concentrations, and soil bulk density and C and N mass were not significantly affected by afforestation. The results are at variance with paired site studies in more humid environments that show soil C declines following afforestation, but confirm other studies and model predictions that show soil C decline in the early stages after afforestation in low-productivity environments is limited. Afforestation did not affect root biomass of herbaceous species and this may have contributed to the lack of effect on soil C. Although afforestation by itself did not significantly affect soil C and N, over the measurement period soil C concentrations increased, while soil N declined by 450 kg ha−1. The decline in soil N was confined to lower soil layers and could not be accounted for by uptake in vegetation. The observed decline in soil N is consistent with results of other work in grazed, depleted grassland in the region that indicates losses of soil N occur that cannot be accounted for by pathways directly associated with grazing.  相似文献

When modelling the distribution of a species, it is often not possible to comprehensively sample the whole distribution of the species and managers may have habitat models based on data from one area that they want to apply in other areas. Hence, an important question is: how accurate are models of the distributions of species when applied beyond the areas where they were developed? A first step in measuring model transferability could be testing models in adjacent areas. We predicted the habitat associations of the brush‐tailed rock‐wallaby (Petrogale penicillata) across two spatial scales in two neighbouring study areas in eastern Australia, south‐east Queensland and north‐east New South Wales. We used classification trees for exploratory data analysis of habitat relationships and then applied logistic regression models to predict species occurrence. We assessed the within‐area discriminative ability of the habitat models using cross‐validation and threshold plots, and tested the predictive ability of the models for adjacent areas using the receiver operating characteristic statistic to determine the area under the curve. We found that models performed well within an area and extrapolating them to adjacent areas resulted in good predictive performance at the site scale but substantially poorer predictive performance at the landscape scale. We conclude that distribution models for wildlife species should only be extrapolated to neighbouring areas with caution when using landscape‐scale environmental variables. Alternatively, only key habitat associations predicted by the models at this scale should be transferred across adjacent areas once verified against local knowledge of the ecology of the study species.  相似文献

1. Flood‐pulsed wetlands make vital contributions to local and global biodiversity. However, the patterns and controls of spatial and temporal variation in aquatic biodiversity in flood‐pulsed wetlands are not well understood. We analysed the relationship between variation in hydrological regime and the patterns of aquatic biodiversity in a large pristine flood‐pulsed wetland, the Okavango Delta, Botswana. 2. Surveys of water chemistry, diatoms and macroinvertebrates were conducted over the seasonal phases of the flood pulse. Hydrological variables of flood frequency and hydroperiod class were collated from 16 years of satellite images. Multivariate regression trees and generalised least squares regression were used to determine the chief controls of community composition and taxon richness. 3. Hydroperiod class, phase of the flood and conductivity explained 32% and 43% of the variation in diatom and invertebrate taxon richness, respectively. There was a negative relationship between hydroperiod class and invertebrate taxon richness on the rising, peak and receding flood, whereas at low flood there was no significant relationship. Multivariate regression tree analysis revealed hydroperiod class, phase of the flood and conductivity as the dominant forces shaping invertebrate and diatom community composition. 4. Seasonal and spatial variation in hydrological conditions are the principal drivers of variation in aquatic biodiversity in flood‐pulsed wetlands. In pristine flood‐pulsed wetlands, increased productivity caused by the arrival of the flood waters appears to override disturbance and connectivity in shaping taxon richness and community composition. Thus, these data suggest that the maintenance of a rich mosaic of habitats covering a broad range of hydroperiod is the key to preserving aquatic biodiversity and natural ecosystem function in flood‐pulsed wetlands.  相似文献

Karyotypes and nuclear DNA amounts in Polypodium L. (Polypodiaceae)   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Karyotype studies in several species of Polypodium show that telocentric chromosomes are the most common with acrocentrics forming the remainder of the complement. The relative numbers of these chromosome types can be used as indicators of species relationships although direct comparisons are difficult to make due to the large number of similar-sized chromosomes. The karyotype data support the theory that P. interjectum is a polyploid derived from the hybridization of, P. australe and P. vulgare. Measurements of nuclear DNA content show that the four diploid species P. australe, P. scouleri, P. virginianum and P. glycyrrhiza all have very similar amounts of DNA. The tetraploid P. vulgare has one-and-a-half times the DNA content of the diploids and the hexaploid P. interjectum has two times the DNA content of the diploids. The chromosomes of the tetraploid and hexaploid are smaller than those of the diploids and evolution in Polypodium appears to have been accompanied by either a loss or gain of nuclear DNA; the direction of the change cannot be ascertained by the present study.  相似文献
