Considerable variability in the activity of the hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis in response to stress has been found in quantitative genetic studies investigating healthy individuals suggesting that at least part of this variance is due to genetic factors. Since the HPA axis is regulated by a neuronal network including amygdala, hippocampus, prefrontal cortex as well as brainstem circuits, the investigation of candidate genes that impact neurotransmitter systems related to these brain regions might further elucidate the genetic underpinnings of the stress response. However, aside from genetic risk factors, past stressful life events might also result in long-term adjustments of HPA axis reactivity. Here, we investigated the effects of the − 1019 G/C polymorphism in the HTR1A gene encoding the serotonin (5-HT) receptor 1A (5-HT1A) and stressful life events experienced during childhood and adolescence on changes in cortisol levels in response to the Trier Social Stress Test (TSST) in a sample of healthy older adults (N = 97). Regression analyses revealed a significant effect of HTR1A genotype with the G allele being associated with a less pronounced stress response. In addition, an inverse relationship between past stressful life events and cortisol release but no gene × environment interaction was detected. The results further underscore the crucial role of functional serotonergic genetic variation as well as stressful events during critical stages of development on the acute stress response later in life.  相似文献

Chronotherapeutics are well established for the treatment of depression and associated sleeping problems in adults. However, effects are still understudied in adolescents. Two pilot studies highlighted the crucial role of sleep when it comes to the treatment of depression, by means of chronotherapeutics, in adolescents. The aim of the present study was to investigate the role of adjunctive wake therapy (WT) in addition to bright light therapy (BLT) with respect to sleep behaviors. In the present study, 62 depressed inpatients (aged 13–18 years; diagnosed with Beck Depression Inventory Revision) were randomly assigned to two groups: BLT only (BLT-group) and a combination of BLT and WT (COMB-group). After one night of WT adolescents in the COMB-group revealed longer sleep durations, time in bed, advanced sleep onset, less wakes during night and an improved sleep efficiency. However, one night of WT plus BLT had no additional effect on sleep parameters compared with BLT-group in the long run. Therefore, future studies should assess whether more nights of WT might lead to more sustainable effects.  相似文献

The caudal skeleton of Apteronotus leptorhynchus was studied at various stages from hatching to the adult stage using anatomical and histological techniques. The caudal skeleton that supports the lepidotrichia is reduced to a rhomboid caudal plate (caudal cartilage) that extends the vertebral axis. This cartilage appears for the first time in 8 day old fish, postero-ventral to the notochord. During its growth, perichondral and endochondral ossification occurs, beginning at the anterior end of the cartilage. Comparison with the anatomy and ontogeny of the typical caudal skeleton of teleosts allows us to interpret the caudal cartilage of A. leptorhynchus as an hypuro-opisthural component that is homologous to the cartilage that occurs at the tip of the axial skeleton in Eigenmannia virescens.  相似文献

Chronic 10 Hz stimulation of rat fast-twitch muscle induced rapid and reversible changes in the tissue levels of fast myosin heavy chain (HC) mRNA isoforms. These changes consisted of a rapid decrease in HCIIb mRNA and a progressive increase in HCIIa mRNA. After 15 days, the HCIIb mRNA normally amounting to approximately 80%, had decreased to less than 5% of the sum of the two HC mRNA isoforms. HCIIb mRNA was again detectable one day after cessation of stimulation and progressively increased at the expense of HCIIa mRNA with ongoing recovery. These results point to a down-regulation of the HCIIb gene by the applied stimulus pattern which, conversely, enhances the expression of the HCIIa gene.  相似文献

Simulation models are extensively used to predict agricultural productivity and greenhouse gas emissions. However, the uncertainties of (reduced) model ensemble simulations have not been assessed systematically for variables affecting food security and climate change mitigation, within multi‐species agricultural contexts. We report an international model comparison and benchmarking exercise, showing the potential of multi‐model ensembles to predict productivity and nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions for wheat, maize, rice and temperate grasslands. Using a multi‐stage modelling protocol, from blind simulations (stage 1) to partial (stages 2–4) and full calibration (stage 5), 24 process‐based biogeochemical models were assessed individually or as an ensemble against long‐term experimental data from four temperate grassland and five arable crop rotation sites spanning four continents. Comparisons were performed by reference to the experimental uncertainties of observed yields and N2O emissions. Results showed that across sites and crop/grassland types, 23%–40% of the uncalibrated individual models were within two standard deviations (SD) of observed yields, while 42 (rice) to 96% (grasslands) of the models were within 1 SD of observed N2O emissions. At stage 1, ensembles formed by the three lowest prediction model errors predicted both yields and N2O emissions within experimental uncertainties for 44% and 33% of the crop and grassland growth cycles, respectively. Partial model calibration (stages 2–4) markedly reduced prediction errors of the full model ensemble E‐median for crop grain yields (from 36% at stage 1 down to 4% on average) and grassland productivity (from 44% to 27%) and to a lesser and more variable extent for N2O emissions. Yield‐scaled N2O emissions (N2O emissions divided by crop yields) were ranked accurately by three‐model ensembles across crop species and field sites. The potential of using process‐based model ensembles to predict jointly productivity and N2O emissions at field scale is discussed.  相似文献

A new method for isolating specialized transducing phages is described. It was used to isolate a group of phi80 transducing phages which carry various bacterial markers from the metB region of the Escherichia coli chromosome. Some of the phages selected for transduction of the supA36 marker were also shown to carry rif, a locus known to specify the beta subunit of ribonucleic acid polymerase. Expression of the prophage rif(r) gene in lysogens was demonstrated by its ability to confer rifampin resistance on part of the cellular ribonucleic acid polymerase pool.  相似文献

Summary The rate of CO2 assimilation at light saturation and an intercellular CO2 concentration of 350 l l-1 (photosynthetic capacity), measured in leaves of Eucalyptus pauciflora, E. behriana, E. delegatensis and Acacia melanoxylon, declined over the course of cloudless days under naturally varying environmental conditions as well as under constant optimal conditions for high CO2 uptake. Since the capacity did not recover during the light period, it was different from the midday depression of gas exchange. The change appeared to be caused neither by the diurnal variation of total leaf water potential, by photoinhibition of redox-reaction centres in photosystems nor by changes in the intrinsic properties of Ribulose-bisphosphate carboxylase-oxygenase. The decline was more pronounced in winter than in summer. It was related to the duration of illumination or the cumulative carbon gain. It was reversible in the following dark phase, and it did not occur on changeable days with short peaks of high light.Despite the decline in photosynthetic capacity, the initial slope of the CO2 response of net photosynthesis, as obtained at low intercellular CO2 concentrations, remained constant during the day, but declined at night when photosynthetic capacity recovered. In all cases stomatal conductance varied in parallel with photosynthetic capacity.
