Bacterial dynamics in two high-arctic lakes 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The heterotrophic planktonic bacteria in two high-arctic lakes were studied by direct microscope count and the enzymatic uptake of 14C labelled glucose which generally conformed to Michaelis-Menten kinetics. Bacterial numbers and activity in oligo-trophic Char Lake ranged from 0.1 to 2.0×10?3 bacteria/l and a maximum uptake velocity (Vmax) of 1.8 × 10?3μg glucose l? h?1. Nearby Meretta Lake received waste water from the Department of Transport Base at Resolute and this eutrophication was reflected in higher bacterial numbers of 2-80 × 108/1 and Kmax of 0.1 × 10?1-7.5 × 10?1 fig glucose l?1 h?1 The Kmax per cell in Char Lake was 3 × 10?11μg glucose l?1 h?1 and changed little between the period of solid ice cover in May and ice-free conditions in August. Bacterial cycles could not be related to phytoplankton cycles in either lake. Comparison of kinetic data from several lakes suggests a relationship between the bacterial uptake rate of glucose and phytoplankton production. Both bacterial numbers and activity in Char Lake may be very close to the minima to be expected in undisturbed freshwater environments. 相似文献

1. The general structure of the gills of different fishes is compared and it is concluded that, though essentially the same, there are certain differences by which they can be recognized. Possible ways in which they may have evolved from one another are considered. 2. A detailed account is given of the structure of the secondary lamellae, where gaseous exchange takes place, and it is shown that two epithelial sheets are separated by a vascular axis mainly composed of pillar cells overlain by a basement membrane on each side. Blood pathways through the gills are discussed in relation to their respiratory function. 3. The embryonic development of gills is described and evidence regarding homo-logies of different structures, particularly the pillar cells, is reviewed. 4. The gills of fish having different modes of life show variations in (a) the number of arches, (b) the number and length of the gill filaments, and (c) the size and frequency of the secondary lamellae. Ways in which measurements of gill area may be carried out and some of the complications involved are reviewed and a summary given of measurements made for a wide variety of species. Measurements of the thickness of the water-blood barrier are also discussed; the more active fish generally have thinner water-blood barriers and larger gill areas. 5. The different mechanisms of gill ventilation are summarized and characteristics of gill resistance in elasmobranchs and teleosts are compared. Gas exchange is discussed in relation to available techniques and the current terminology and symbols, and to indicate the value of analogies between gill exchangers and systems studied by engineers. 6. Parasites can promote diversity by mediating coexistence between a poorer and superior competitor, if the superior competitor is more susceptible to parasitism. However, hosts and parasites frequently undergo antagonistic coevolution. This process may result in the accumulation of pleiotropic fitness costs associated with host resistance, and could breakdown coexistence. We experimentally investigated parasite‐mediated coexistence of two genotypes of the bacterium Pseudomonas fluorescens, where one genotype underwent coevolution with a parasite (a virulent bacteriophage), whereas the other genotype was resistant to the evolving phages at all time points, but a poorer competitor. In the absence of phages, the resistant genotype was rapidly driven extinct in all populations. In the presence of the phages, the resistant genotype persisted in four of six populations and eventually reached higher frequencies than the sensitive genotype. The coevolving genotype showed a reduction in the growth rate, consistent with a cost of resistance, which may be responsible for a decline in its relative fitness. These results demonstrate that the stability of parasite‐mediated coexistence of resistant and susceptible species or genotypes is likely to be affected if parasites and susceptible hosts coevolve. 相似文献

The past several years have seen a flurry of papers seeking to clarify the utility and limits of DNA barcoding, particularly in areas such as species discovery and paralogy due to nuclear pseudogenes. Platelet activation is tightly regulated by products of the endothelium and platelets including nitric oxide (NO). Excess vascular oxidative stress has been associated with impaired NO release, and antioxidant status has been shown to alter endothelium-derived NO bioactivity. Although physiological levels of a-tocopherol are known to inhibit platelet function, the effect of a-tocopherol on platelet NO release is unknown. Loading platelets with physiologic levels of a-tocopherol increased platelet NO production approximately 1.5-fold (Pa-tocopherol, platelet NO release increased 50% (Pa-Tocopherol-loaded platelets also produced 74% less superoxide as compared with control (Pa-tocopherol inhibited PKC-dependent eNOS phosphorylation as determined by immunoprecipitation. Lastly, platelets isolated from NOS3-deficient mice released 80% less superoxide as compared with control animals (P=0.011), and incubation of NOS III-deficient platelets with 500 mM a-tocopherol only caused a modest additional decrease in platelet superoxide release (NS). There are few reports of the prevalence of psychotic disorders among isolated
population groups. Where present, variations in prevalence estimates raise
questions about the validity of methods of case ascertainment in such settings.
In a previous population-based survey of the Borana pastoralist community
in Ethiopia using the Composite International Diagnostic Interview, no cases
of schizophrenia were identified. In order to further explore this finding
and investigate how serious mental disorder is conceptualized, we conducted
focus group discussions with key members of the Borana pastoralist community.
Subsequently, focus group participants were used as key informants to identify
cases with possible psychotic disorder, based on their conceptualization.
Cases identified by key informants were interviewed by a trained psychiatrist
using the Schedules for Clinical Assessment in Neuropsychiatry (SCAN), to
confirm presence of disorder. Focus group discussions were subjected to thematic
analysis. The incongruity between local and psychiatric concepts lay mainly
in the fact that key informants described characteristics of marata (“madness”)
in terms of overt behavioural symptoms. Following the focus group discussions,
participants identified eight individuals with schizophrenia and 13 with a
psychotic mood disorder, confirmed through SCAN interview. Studies of psychotic
disorders in such communities are likely to benefit from combining structured

The specialist digger wasp Trachypus boharti Rubio‐Espina preys exclusively on males of the stingless bee Scaptotrigona postica Latreille 1807, although the hunting attacks involve both male and worker bees of S. postica and members of its own species. To understand the mechanism of prey selection, the cuticular hydrocarbon patterns of workers and males of S. postica are analyzed in detail, and the mandibular secretion of males is examined. The cuticular profiles of males and workers are distinctively different. The major group of cuticular compounds, heptacosene isomers, is twice as abundant in workers as in males. There is no clear distinction between worker and male mandibular secretions. Such a distinct and straightforward caste‐specific difference in cuticular hydrocarbons could function as a recognition cue by which T. boharti distinguishes between workers and males of S. postica. 相似文献
