Obtaining a sufficient number of DNA samples from ice‐breeding marine phocids, in a noninvasive manner, has proven difficult and has limited the ability to use molecular genetics on these species. We evaluate the ability to genotype ringed seals using a novel source of DNA, skin cells shed by the seal as it moults on sea ice. We found that shed skin samples yielded a lower quantity and purity of DNA compared to tissue samples. Nevertheless, the shed skin cells were a viable source of DNA for microsatellite analysis; we found no significant difference in allelic diversity or heterozygosities between tissue samples and shed skin cells. Summary Structural aspects of insect pheromones, especially their hydrophobicity, prompted the examination of them by in vitro and in vivo experiments as inhibitors of acetylcholinesterase. All 17 pheromones assayed in sufficient detail were reversible, competitive inhibitors of acetylcholinesterase: Ki values ranged from 0.27 mM for frontalin to 9.3 mM for ipsenol, both aggregation pheromones. All seven pheromones assayed with Tribolium castaneum immobilised this species with an effect that was weakly dose-responsive over the range of concentrations tested. Concentrations eliciting 25% immobility (IC25) ranged from 2.0x103 ppm for 3-methy 1–2-cyclohexenone to 2.0x104 ppm for cis-7, cis-11-hexadecadien-1-yl acetate, both sex attractants. Background
Pairing of homologous chromosomes at meiosis is an important requirement for recombination and balanced chromosome segregation among the products of meiotic division. Recombination is initiated by double strand breaks (DSBs) made by Spo11 followed by interaction of DSB sites with a homologous chromosome. This interaction requires the strand exchange proteins Rad51 and Dmc1 that bind to single stranded regions created by resection of ends at the site of DSBs and promote interactions with uncut DNA on the homologous partner. Recombination is also considered to be dependent on factors that stabilize interactions between homologous chromosomes. Pitcher plants of the genusNepenthesattract and trap invertebrateprey using nectar-secreting pitchers.
