Biliary brushings are currently the best accepted method to obtain a cytological diagnosis of pancreatic cancer or cholangiocarcinoma. The technique has good specificity but poor sensitivity. Two dedicated pathologists reviewed 137 consecutive biliary brushings from 127 patients between February 1997 and February 2000. The ultimate diagnosis was determined by review of radiology, operative diagnosis and patient outcome. The sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value and negative predictive value of the original results and the review results were calculated and compared. Additional diagnostic categories 'suspicious' and 'atypical possibly benign' were included on review. After review, the sensitivity improved from 49.4% to 89.0% and the specificity remained 100%. The use of the additional diagnostic category 'suspicious' increased the sensitivity to 90.4%, at the expense of a fall of the specificity to 66.7%. We conclude that review by two dedicated pathologists and additional diagnostic categories can improve the diagnostic accuracy of biliary brushings.  相似文献

A chromic acid oxidation-silver technique was used to localize polysaccharide material in Polycelis tenuis at the electron microscope level. In the epithelium, staining was observed within apical vacuoles and on the free surfaces of the cells. A similar staining was observed in relation to the glycocalyx of the pharyngeal epithelia and that of the flame cells. Silver was deposited in the basement membrane. In the parenchyma, the major components giving a positive reaction were the cyanophil and mucous gland cells. Particularly strong silver staining (confirmed by X-ray microanalysis) was observed in the granules and Golgi apparatus of the cyanophil cells. IDPase activity was also found in relation to the Golgi apparatus and its secretory products. The overall distribution of mucopolysaccharide material was confirmed with the PAS and Alcian blue techniques. The fine structural localization of the Alcian blue was also determined using electron microscopy and X-ray microanalysis.  相似文献

Mice infected with the Venezuelan equine encephalomyelitis virus showed a significant decrease in the GABA content of cerebral hemispheres. Activity of the enzyme which synthetizes GABA, glutamate decarboxylase, is also reduced in whole cerebral hemispheres, neostriatum, and frontal cortex of infected animals, as compared to values obtained from the same regions of control mice. No significant difference was demonstrated in the activities of GABA transaminase, glutamate dehydrogenase, lactate dehydrogenase, succinate dehydrogenase and NAD-malate dehydrogenase in any of the regions studied. The results suggest that the viral infection produced an alteration in the mechanism of GABA synthesis.  相似文献

Summary The enzymes monoamine oxidase A (MAO A), monoamine oxidase B (MAO B) and benzylamine oxidase (BzAO) have been localized histochemically in the human uterus during various phases of the menstrual cycle. The results show a large increase in MAO A activity in the endometrial gland cells in the secretory phase of the cycle. MAO B activity was found in both endometrium and myometrium but did not show a cyclical variation in activity. BzAO was localized primarily in the tunica media of the myometrial blood vessels. The two subspecies of ruffed lemurs (Vareica variegata variegata andVarecia variegata rubra) have been maintained in captivity since 1959 and all institutions which hold ruffed lemurs have contributed data to theVarecia International Studbook. Studbook data were used to analyze inbreeding effects on survival in both subspecies ofVarecia. Several variables, including offspring's inbreeding coefficient, litter size, mother's inbreeding coefficient, and mother's age, were examined for significant associations with percent survivorship per litter. Percent survivorship per litter was negatively correlated to the offspring inbreeding coefficient in the black and white ruffed lemurs (p<0.001) but no significant association was found for red ruffed lemurs. Although emphasis has been put towards the status of the red ruffed lemurs due to the small founder size, the black and white ruffed lemurs should also be managed with care due to the lower tolerance to inbreeding in captivity.  相似文献
