Abstract. Extracts of testes and male accessory (paragonial) glands made from three species of Delia (onion fly {D.antiqua) , seedcorn fly (D.platura) , and cabbage fly (D.radicum)) were injected into conspecific virgin females. Extracts of paragonial glands, but not testes, from onion, seedcorn and cabbage fly males stimulated oviposition and suppressed mating when injected into conspecific virgin females. When extracts of paragonial glands from males of these species were injected into heterospecific virgin females, the extracts of D.antiqua and D.platura were fully cross-reactive with respect to oviposition; interspecific injection stimulated oviposition at the level of the conspecific mated controls. Injection of D.radicum extract fully activated the D.antiqua and D.platura ovipositional response. D.antiqua extract caused mating inhibition and partial oviposition in D.radicum; that of D.platura had no effect on either oviposition or mating inhibition in D.radicum. These results suggest that D.antiqua and D.platura are more closely related to one another than either is to D.radicum , and agree with published anatomically-based phylogenies and a genetic distance calculation based on eight enzyme loci. The occurrence of sex peptide cross-reactivity, though asymmetrical, between D.radicum versus D.antiqua and D.platura indicates that, functionally, sex peptides have changed little during the evolution of this genus. An emerging pattern of broad cross-reactivity within genera suggests that sex peptides are not an initiator of reproductive isolation.  相似文献

Transposable elements of the mariner family are widespread and have been found in the genome of plants, animals and insects. However, most of these elements contain multiple inactivating mutations and so far, only three naturally occurring mariner elements are known to be functional. In a previous study, a mariner‐like element called Hvmar1 was discovered in the genome of the tobacco budworm Heliothis virescens. Further analysis of the Hvmar1 nucleotide sequence revealed the presence of 30‐bp imperfect inverted terminal repeats and an intact open reading frame, which is considered to encode a functional transposase. In the present study, we show that the Hvmar1 element is active using interplasmid transposition assays in Drosophila melanogaster embryos. When injected into Drosophila embryos, the helper plasmid produced a transposase that was able to mediate transposition of the Hvmar1 element from a donor to a target plasmid. The transposition efficiency of Hvmar1 in D. melanogaster is approximately 11‐fold lower than that of the well‐known Mos1 mariner transposon. However, this efficiency is comparable to those observed previously with Mos1 in non‐Drosophila insects. We identified 10 independent interplasmid transposition events, albeit the recovery of these events was rare. In each case the Hvmar1 element transposed in a precise manner, with the characteristic TA dinucleotides being duplicated on insertion. Furthermore, two of the target sites identified have been used previously by Mos1 for insertion. The active transposition of Hvmar1 in D. melanogaster provides a basis for examining the mobility of this element in its natural host as well as a starting point for comparative studies with Mos1 and other functional mariner transposons.  相似文献

Dewaxed thin-sectioned and dewaxed isolated mature fruit cuticlesrevealed the unequivocal presence in situ of visibly discrete,ubiquitous, cuticular pores or orifices concomitant with anticlinally-orientedtranscuticular canals in 51 varieties of fruit among 20 plantfamilies. More than 66 per cent of the fruit cuticles have poresand/or canals. No correlation exists between either fruit sizeor pore size and cuticle thickness. Dewaxed cuticles rangedfrom 1.25–22.5 µm in thickness. Canal lengths aredirectly related to cuticle thickness. Cuticular occlusionsof the epidermal cells were found in 76 per cent of the fruitsexamined. Evidence is provided by light microscopy photomicrographs.
