The facility for vegetative reproduction and reproduction by spores was compared in four common mosses by observations on naturally occurring spores, sporclings and juvenile shoots combined with experimental field plantings. In Polytrichum alpestre no evidence of spore germination in the field was obtained, but shoots were formed by regeneration from shoot fragments. Spore germination leading to shoot development, and ultimately to sporophyte production, occurred freely in Funaria hygrometrica. Atrichum undulatum and Bryum argenteum gave intermediate results in that regeneration occurred freely from shoot fragments, and while many spores germinated the sporelings normally failed to develop. There was strong evidence that experimentally planted spores occasionally gave rise to shoot production in both the latter species, however, and shoots commonly developed on protonema planted in the field. Prenatal maternal psychological distress increases risk for adverse infant outcomes. However, the biological mechanisms underlying this association remain unclear. Prenatal stress can impact fetal epigenetic regulation that could underlie changes in infant stress responses. It has been suggested that maternal glucocorticoids may mediate this epigenetic effect. We examined this hypothesis by determining the impact of maternal cortisol and depressive symptoms during pregnancy on infant NR3C1 and BDNF DNA methylation. Fifty-seven pregnant women were recruited during the second or third trimester. Participants self-reported depressive symptoms and salivary cortisol samples were collected diurnally and in response to a stressor. Buccal swabs for DNA extraction and DNA methylation analysis were collected from each infant at 2 months of age, and mothers were assessed for postnatal depressive symptoms. Prenatal depressive symptoms significantly predicted increased NR3C1 1F DNA methylation in male infants (β = 2.147, P = 0.044). Prenatal depressive symptoms also significantly predicted decreased BDNF IV DNA methylation in both male and female infants (β = −3.244, P = 0.013). No measure of maternal cortisol during pregnancy predicted infant NR3C1 1F or BDNF promoter IV DNA methylation. Our findings highlight the susceptibility of males to changes in NR3C1 DNA methylation and present novel evidence for altered BDNF IV DNA methylation in response to maternal depression during pregnancy. The lack of association between maternal cortisol and infant DNA methylation suggests that effects of maternal depression may not be mediated directly by glucocorticoids. Future studies should consider other potential mediating mechanisms in the link between maternal mood and infant outcomes. 相似文献

Melanin isolated from the ink sac of Sepia officinalis (Sepia melanin) has been proposed as a standard for natural eumelanin, and a standard mild isolation and purification protocol for Sepia melanin has been developed (Zeise, doctoral dissertation, Johns Hopkins University, 1991). The goal of the present work, developed using Sepia melanin, was to quantify the bioavailable carboxylic acid groups present in melanin particles. Bioavailability is governed by the accessibility of carboxy groups to the surrounding biological milieu, and is expressed as microequivalents of carboxy group per gram of melanin. The present work was carried out using an heterogeneous slurry of melanin in a nonaqueous system. A standard acidic titrant, and an automatic titrator operating in an equilibrium titration mode were used to characterize and quantify the carboxy group content of Sepia melanins and several other commonly used melanins purified by a standard method (Zeise et al., Pigment Cell Res. United States military medical ethics evolved during its involvement in two recent wars, Gulf War I (1990–1991) and the War on Terror (2001–). Norms of conduct for military clinicians with regard to the treatment of prisoners of war and the administration of non‐therapeutic bioactive agents to soldiers were set aside because of the sense of being in a ‘new kind of war’. Concurrently, the use of radioactive metal in weaponry and the ability to measure the health consequences of trade embargos on vulnerable civilians occasioned new concerns about the health effects of war on soldiers, their offspring, and civilians living on battlefields. Civilian medical societies and medical ethicists fitfully engaged the evolving nature of the medical ethics issues and policy changes during these wars. Medical codes of professionalism have not been substantively updated and procedures for accountability for new kinds of abuses of medical ethics are not established. Looking to the future, medicine and medical ethics have not articulated a vision for an ongoing military‐civilian dialogue to ensure that standards of medical ethics do not evolve simply in accord with military exigency. 相似文献
