1. The habitat templet approach depends on defining templet axes appropriate to the organism(s) of interest, predicting the traits of species associated with different parts of the templet, and testing these predictions in a range of habitats whose positions in the templet have been determined. 2. In this study of thirty-five benthic insect taxa at fifty-four tributary sites of the Taieri River on the South Island of New Zealand, we chose as the temporal axis the intensity/frequency of disturbance, defined in terms of bed movement during high discharge events. As the spatial axis, we postulated that three features would provide refugia and therefore ameliorate disturbance—percentage of the bed with low shear stress, percentage of the bed made up of large substratum particles and availability of interstitial space in the bed—from which we derived a combined multivariate refugium axis. 3. More disturbed communities contained a significantly higher percentage of individuals possessing the following traits: small size, high adult mobility, habitat generalist (each predicted to confer resilience in response to disturbance), clinger, streamlined/flattened and with two or more life stages outside the stream (each predicted to confer resistance in the face of disturbance). When analyses were performed on the percentage of taxa having particular traits, the predicted positive relationships with average bed movement were found for high adult mobility and habitat generalist traits. 4. The percentage of variance in trait scores explained by intensity of disturbance was generally higher in sites with less refugia available and lower in sites further from the headwaters. The percentage of variance explained was higher in sites recently subject to a major high discharge disturbance, suggesting that disturbances tend to strengthen the pattern of preponderance of resilience/resistance traits. 5. We mapped insect taxa onto the two-dimensional templet, following Grime et al.’s triangular terrestrial plant classification. The full variety of resistance and resilience traits were represented in insect species throughout the templet, but taxa associated with more disturbed conditions generally displayed a larger number of resilience and resistance traits, combined, than taxa associated with more stable stream beds.  相似文献

1. The relationship between land use and stream conditions was investigated, including physicochemistry, the availability of primary food resources and species richness, species composition and trophic structure of stream macroinvertebrate communities. The survey involved eight subcatchments of the Taieri River (New Zealand) encompassing reasonably homogeneous examples of four major land uses: native forest, native tussock grassland, plantations of introduced pine and agricultural pasture.
2. Each land use was represented by two subcatchments, each subcatchment by two to four tributaries, and each tributary by two to three sampling sites. These three sampling scales each represent typical designs for stream community studies. By recording responses at all scales, it can be determined explicitly whether the scale of sampling influences interpretation of community structure.
3. Elevation, riffle length, proportion of large substrata in the bed, total phosphorus and alkalinity were significantly related to land use, as were canopy cover and the relative abundance of leaves and wood in the streams. Principal components analysis of invertebrate density data identified nine orthogonal community types, the distributions of two of which were significantly related to land use. The role played by browsers and shredders in the stream community depended on land use.
4. Primary analysis was at the level of the tributary. When it focused on sites within tributaries, more variables were related to land use and at a higher level of significance. This was largely a result of enhanced statistical power due to increased replication. When whole subcatchments were the focus of attention, statistical power was so low, even with six to eleven subsamples to generate overall means, that few significant patterns could be identified. Observations in tropical lowland rainforests damaged by Cyclone Winifred on 1 February 1986 suggest that the disturbance has been followed by an unusual burst of flowering. Fifty-four species of concurrently flowering shrubs and trees were recorded in early March along a 4 km road transect in a cyclone-damaged forest. Approximately 80% of the smaller tree and shrub species observed were flowering. Twelve species which had flowered and fruited prior to the cyclone flowered again. Some species which normally flower following periods of partial or complete deciduousness in the drier months of the year flowered after being defoliated by the cyclone. Widespread defoliation of the rainforests, together with the hot, dry weather which followed the cyclone, exposed the understorey layers to abrupt increases in temperature, insolation, and water stress. It is postulated that these environmental changes may have effected the synchronization of flowering of a larger number of species than would normally occur. It is suggested that longterm changes in the species composition of the damaged forests as a result of coincidences of seed availability and regenerative space may occur.  相似文献

Lolium perenne and Trifolium repens were grown in a Free Air CO2 Enrichment (FACE) system at elevated (600 μimol mol-1) and ambient (340 μmol mol-1) carbon dioxide concentrations during a whole growing season. Using a root ingrowth bag technique the extent to which CO2 enrichment influenced the growth of L, perenne and T. repens roots under two contrasting nutrient regimes was examined. Root ingrowth bags were inserted for a fixed time into the soil in order to trap roots. It was also possible to follow the mortality of roots in bags inserted for different time intervals. Root ingrowth of both L. perenne and T. repens increased under elevated CO2 conditions. In L. perenne, root ingrowth decreased with increasing nutrient fertilizer level, but for T. repens the root ingrowth was not affected by the nutrient application rate. Besides biomass measurements, root length estimates were made for T, repens. These showed an increase under elevated CO2 concentrations. Root decomposition appeared to decrease under elevated CO2 concentrations. A possible explanation for this effect is the observed changes in tissue composition, such as the increase in the carbon: nitrogen ratio in roots of L. perenne at elevated CO2 concentrations.  相似文献

The endemic South African velvet worm genus Peripatopsis currently contains eight recognized species described from variable morphological characters and the current taxonomy is unsatisfactory. In an attempt to investigate evolutionary relationships within Peripatopsis, we collected 137 individuals from 34 sample localities for six of the eight species. Sequence data derived from two partial mitochondrial (mt)DNA gene loci (COI and 12S rRNA), as well as partial sequence data from the ribosomal nuclear 18S rDNA locus in combination with gross morphological characters and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), was used to examine evolutionary relationships. Phylogenetic relationships were investigated using minimum evolution (ME) and Bayesian inferences (BI). Additionally, we also undertook a maximum likelihood (ML) analyses on the combined DNA sequence data set. The combined DNA evidence topologies derived from the ME, BI, and ML was highly congruent and was characterized by the presence of multiple lineages within recognized taxa. Peripatopsis clavigera, Peripatopsis moseleyi, and Peripatopsis sedgwicki each comprised two evolutionary lineages; Peripatopsis capensis comprised three; and Peripatopsis balfouri comprised six operational taxonomic units respectively. Genealogical exclusivity at both mtDNA and nuclear DNA among the geographically coherent groups coupled with pronounced sequence divergence suggested a two‐fold increase in the number of species within Peripatopsis. Previously used gross morphological characters (such as the number of leg pairs and colour) were either highly variable within operational taxonomic units, or were invariant, suggesting that alternative morphological characters are necessary for species discrimination. Abstract: American mink (Neovison vison) are an ecologically damaging invasive species where they have been introduced in Europe. Effectiveness of mink population control by trapping has been difficult to assess, without knowing how efficiently mink are caught by traps or detected by other methods. Use of track-recording rafts to detect mink and guide trapping effort has proved efficient and leads to a supposition that no detection indicates absence of mink. To draw this conclusion with any confidence requires a measure of detectability. We applied occupancy models to data from an earlier study to estimate detectability of individual American mink on track-recording rafts. Estimated detectability of individual mink, per raft, and 2-week check period varied between 0.4 in late summer and 0.6 in late autumn. By inference, risk of failing to detect a mink that was present would be <5% given 4–6 independent opportunities to detect it. These opportunities could be created either by using a raft spacing that ensured multiple detections of each mink or by monitoring rafts through a succession of check intervals. Within certain simple constraints, raft location did not contribute substantially to detection probability. These findings will allow field operators, strategists, and funders to assess with confidence the success of efforts to control mink density. We expect the estimation of individual detectability to be similarly valuable in population control or eradication of other species.  相似文献

The direct and indirect interactions that large mammalian carnivores have with other species can have far‐reaching effects on ecosystems. In recent years there has been growing interest in the role that Australia's largest terrestrial predator, the dingo, may have in structuring ecosystems. In this study we investigate the effect of dingo exclusion on mammal communities, by comparing mammal assemblages where dingoes were present and absent. The study was replicated at three locations spanning 300 km in the Strzelecki Desert. We hypothesized that larger species of mammal subject to direct interactions with dingoes should increase in abundance in the absence of dingoes while smaller species subject to predation by mesopredators should decrease in abundance because of increased mesopredator impact. There were stark differences in mammal assemblages on either side of the dingo fence and the effect of dingoes appeared to scale with body size. Kangaroos and red foxes were more abundant in the absence of dingoes while Rabbits and the Dusky Hopping‐mouse Notomys fuscus were less abundant where dingoes were absent, suggesting that they may benefit from lower red fox numbers in the presence of dingoes. Feral cats and dunnarts (Sminthopsis spp.) did not respond to dingo exclusion. Our study provides evidence that dingoes do structure mammal communities in arid Australia; however, dingo exclusion is also associated with a suite of land use factors, including sheep grazing and kangaroo harvesting that may also be expected to influence kangaroo and red fox populations. Maintaining or restoring populations of dingoes may be useful strategies to mitigate the impacts of mesopredators and overgrazing by herbivores.  相似文献
