Using the outcrossing Primula farinosa and its autogamous selfing relatives P. scotica , P. scandinavica and P. stricta , we compared the fitness of light and heavy seeds. Heavy seeds germinated in greater numbers and more quickly. In competition with seedlings grown from lighter seeds, heavy seeds produced larger rosettes. In P. farinosa such seedlings went on to produce more seeds, and in two populations heavier seeds, than plants from lighter seeds. After transplantation to natural populations, seedlings of P. farinosa derived from heavy seeds produced larger rosettes, more flowers and seeds than those from lighter seeds in certain populations so that seedlings born of heavy seeds were much fitter than seedlings from lighter seeds. Average seed weight varied in inverse proportion to seed number per capsule. The autogamous species produced on average about twice as many seeds per capsule as P. farinosa . In P. scotica and P. stricta this difference appears to be due in part to assured fertilization, but this high fecundity did not cause disadvantageously light seeds. As these species produced fewer capsules per scape, their overall seed production was on average no greater than for P. farinosa . P. farinosa traded-off fitness between capsules with large seed numbers, which donated more offspring to the next generation, and those with small seed numbers, whose heavy seeds would be more likely to reproduce themselves in the next generation. We conclude that low fecundity in outcrossing species might at times be advantageous.  相似文献

We developed 13 microsatellite loci for the olive sea snake, Aipysurus laevis, using both enriched and unenriched genomic DNA libraries. Eleven codominant loci, that reliably amplified, were used to screen 32 individuals across the geographic range of A. laevis. Four loci had four or more alleles (maximum 12), whereas the other seven had either two or three. All but one locus was in Hardy–Weinberg equilibrium. These loci will provide useful markers to investigate population genetic structure for the olive sea snake.  相似文献

The extent to which increased atmospheric nitrogen (N) deposition will drive changes in plant productivity and species composition over the next century will depend on how other influential global change factors, such as climate warming, affect the N retention of ecosystems. We examined the interactive effects of simulated climate warming and N deposition on the recoveries of 15N‐labeled ammonium and 15N‐labeled nitrate tracers added as a pulse to grass‐dominated, temperate old‐field plots at spring thaw. In addition to the year‐round warming treatment, a winter‐only warming treatment was applied to a set of plots to explore the contribution of this component of climate warming to the overall warming effect. By the end of the plant growing season, there was approximately twice as much 15N enrichment in the plant roots and bulk soil from 15NH4+‐addition plots than from 15NO3?‐addition plots, but there were no effects of warming or N fertilization on 15N recovery. Over winter, approximately half of the excess 15N present in plant shoots was lost, which corresponded with large 15N losses from bulk soil in N fertilized plots and large 15N increases in bulk soil in nonfertilized plots. By the next spring, there was decreased 15N recovery in plants in response to N fertilization, which was largely offset by increases in plant 15N recovery in response to year‐round warming. However, 15N retention in bulk soil, where the major part of the 15N label was recovered, was approximately 40% higher in nonfertilized plots than in N fertilized plots. Overall, our results indicate that climate warming increases plant N sequestration in this system but this effect is overwhelmed by the overall effect of nitrogen deposition on ecosystem N losses.  相似文献

The metamorphic rate of Rana pipiens tadpoles was studied under different photoperiods, daylengths, and feeding schedules. Tail resorption and hindlimb growth and development induced by immersion in 30 μg/l thyroxine (T4) were accelerated under longer photoperiods and continuous light when 6L: 18D, 12L: 12D, 18L: 6D, and 24L regimes were compared. Constant light exposure did not produce faster development than an 18 hr photoperiod, and initially was less effective. The rate of spontaneous and T4-induced metamorphosis was greater the shorter the day on 9L:9D, 12L: 12D, or 15L: 15D cycles, although all groups received the same overall amount of light, but in different dosages. When feeding schedule but not the LD cycle was varied, groups of tadpoles fed on 18, 24, or 30 hr regimes showed no differences in growth and development rate on 19L: 5D, and only random variations under continuous light. Differences in metamorphic rate on 18, 24, or 30 hr days are not due to the feeding schedules, but to the LD cycles. From these experiments we conclude that illumination, particularly the length and frequency of the photoperiod, affects the utilization of T4. Development rates independent of the total amount of illumination, but related to daylength and light schedule, suggest interaction of light with an endogenous timing mechanism.  相似文献

  • 1 We investigated the effect on egg hatch of exposure to: (1) varying larval density, and (2) larval contact in Aedes triseriatus Say (Diptera: Culicidae). For 2 days in the laboratory we submerged eggs into a treehole water medium containing 0 (control), 4, 12 or 24 larvae that could either contact the eggs directly or were separated from them by a screen. Following treatment, abundance of microorganisms on the egg surfaces, a food source for newly hatched larvae and a proposed hatching stimulus, was assessed by counts made from serial dilutions of samples.
  • 2 We discovered a complex hatching response to larval contact and to larval density, and an interaction between these two factors in their effect on microbial growth. Hatching was inhibited in the 0-larva control, even though microorganisms grew abundantly on the eggs. Hatch rate, as well as microbial counts, were high for eggs in direct contact with 4 larvae. As density increased in the larval contact treatment, microorganisms disappeared from the egg surfaces and hatch rate declined.
  • 3 When protected from larval grazing, eggs supported numerous microbial colonies irrespective of larval density. In contrast to the contact treatment group, egg hatch increased with increasing larval density. These observations suggest that the combination of microbial growth and a larval factor stimulates hatch. This hatching response may have evolved because both abundant microorganisms and numerous larvae reflect a habitat of good quality.

This study investigated the effect of elevated CO2 on the post‐fire resprouting response of a grassland system of perennial grass species of Cumberland Plain Woodland. Plants were grown in mixtures in natural soil in mesocosms, each containing three exotic grasses (Nassella neesiana, Chloris gayana, Eragrostis curvula) and three native grasses (Themeda australis, Microlaena stipoides, Chloris ventricosa) under elevated (700 ppm) and ambient (385 ppm) CO2 conditions. Resprouting response after fire at the community‐ and species‐level was assessed. There was no difference in community‐level biomass between CO2 treatments; however, exotic species made up a larger proportion of the community biomass under all treatments. There were species‐level responses to elevated CO2 but no significant interactions found between CO2 and burning or plant status. Two exotic grasses (N. neesiana and E. curvula, a C3 and a C4 species respectively), and one native grass (M. stipoides, a C3 species) significantly increased in biomass, and a native C4 grass (C. ventricosa) significantly decreased in biomass under elevated CO2. These results suggest that although overall productivity of this community may not change with increases in CO2 and fire frequency, the community composition may alter due to differential species responses.  相似文献

1. Conservation planning is often hampered by the lack of causal quantitative links between landscape characteristics, restoration actions and habitat conditions that impact the status of imperilled species. Here we present a first step toward linking actions on the landscape to the population status of endangered stream‐type Chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha). 2. We developed relationships between land use, landscape characteristics and freshwater habitat of spring Chinook salmon in the Wenatchee River basin. Available data allowed us to find relationships that described water temperatures at several life stages (prespawning, egg incubation and summer rearing) and substratum characteristics, including fine sediments, cobble and embeddedness. Predictors included altitude, gradient, mean annual precipitation, total and riparian forest cover, road density, impervious surface and alluvium. We used a model averaging approach to account for parameter and model selection uncertainty. Key predictors were total forest cover and impervious surface area for prespawning and summer rearing temperatures; precipitation and stream gradients were important predictors of the percent of fine sediments in stream substrata. 3. We estimated habitat conditions using these relationships in three alternative landscape scenarios: historical, no restoration and one that included a set of restoration actions from local conservation planning. We found that prespawning and summer temperatures were estimated to be slightly higher historically relative to current conditions in dry sparsely forested areas, but lower in some important Chinook salmon spawning and rearing areas and lower in those locations under the restoration scenario. Fine sediments were lower in the historical scenario and were reduced as a consequence of restoration actions in two areas currently unoccupied by Chinook salmon that contain reaches with some potential for high quality spawning and rearing. Cobble and embeddedness in general were predicted to be higher historically and changed little as a result of restoration actions relative to current conditions. 4. This modelling framework converts suites of restoration actions into changes in habitat condition, thereby enabling restoration planners to evaluate alternative combinations of proposed actions. It also provides inputs to models linking habitat conditions to population status. This approach represents a first step in estimating impacts of restoration strategies, and can provide key information for conservation managers and planners.  相似文献

The putative complexity of Combretaceae and lack of information on phylogenetic relationships within the family led us to explore relationships between genera of Combretaceae by means of combined analyses of plastid and nuclear sequences. We collected DNA sequence data from the nuclear ribosomal internal transcribed spacer region and plastid rbcL, psaA‐ycf3 spacer and psbA‐trnH spacer for 14 of the 17 genera of Combretaceae. The current classification of the family into two subfamilies, Strephonematoideae and Combretoideae, is corroborated. Within Combretoideae, division into two tribes, Laguncularieae and Combreteae, is strongly supported. Within Combreteae subtribe Terminaliinae, relationships between genera are largely unresolved. Terminalia is not supported as monophyletic and two groups were identified, one containing mainly African species and another of mostly Asian species. Pteleopsis, Buchenavia and Anogeissus are embedded within Terminalia, and we suggest that all genera of Terminaliinae, with the exception of Conocarpus, should be included in an expanded circumscrition of Terminalia. Within subtribe Combretinae, a clade formed by the two monotypic genera Guiera and Calycopteris is sister to the rest of the subtribe. Groupings in Combretinae are consistent with recent results based on morphological data. Combretum is currently divided into three subgenera: Apethalanthum, Cacoucia and Combretum. The last two were included in this study and supported as monophyletic if Quisqualis is included within subgenus Cacoucia. Meiostemon is sister to subgenus Combretum. We recommend that subgenus Combretum should be expanded to include Meiostemon and subgenus Cacoucia to include Quisqualis. The sectional classification within Combretum proposed in earlier morphological studies is confirmed except for the exclusion of C. imberbe from section Hypocrateropsis in a separate and monotypic section and the inclusion of C. zeyheri (section Spathulipetala) in section Macrostigmatea. In order to accommodate C. imberbe, a new section is suggested.
