Hatching failure within clutches of eggs occurs to varying degrees in many avian species. We investigated predictors of hatching failure in a population of Florida Scrub‐Jays, for which hatching success has been monitored for 15 years. We assessed whether hatching failure was related to parental traits (e.g. age, experience as a pair or body condition), lay date, social structure (e.g. number of helpers), environmental conditions, or some combination of these. We used linear mixed models and Akaike’s information criterion to determine the models that best explain observed patterns of hatching failure. The best model showed that increased hatching failure was associated with below‐average rainfall during the breeding season, and was more common for newly established breeding pairs than for pairs that had previously produced one or more clutches together. Other contributing models suggested that hatching failure was greatest for the youngest and oldest female breeders. Some aspects of our findings are consistent with conclusions drawn from other species. However, as a whole, our analyses suggest that hatching failure in the Florida Scrub‐Jay is influenced by a complex set of environmental and parental factors.  相似文献

Capacitance monitoring is commonly used as an efficient means to generate growth curves of bacterial pathogens. However, the use of capacitance monitoring with Campylobacter spp. was previously determined to be difficult due to the complexity of the required media. We investigated capacitance monitoring using a simplified medium for the efficient and reproducible construction of growth curves for Campylobacter spp . It was determined that Campylobacter spp. should initially be propagated on Mueller Hinton plates in a microaerobic atmosphere (5% O2, 10% CO2, 85% N2) at 37C for 24 h, followed by transfer to Mueller Hinton biphasic cultures for 6 h at 37C in a microaerobic atmosphere. Serial dilutions of the Campylobacter spp. cultures should be used for inoculation of Bactometer wells that contain 1 mL Mueller Hinton broth supplemented with 0.1 M sodium pyruvate for the completion of Campylobacter spp. growth curves with the Bactometer.

PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS

Growth rates can vary greatly among Campylobacter isolates; therefore, the rapid and reproducible methods described will prove useful in studies where the generation of growth curves is critical for subsequent experimental analyses.  相似文献

A study of the platyrrhine prehensile tail provides an opportunity to better understand how ecological and biomechanical factors affect the ability of primates to distribute mass across many different kinds of arboreal supports. Young individuals experience ontogenetic changes in body mass, limb proportions, and motor skills that are likely to exert a strong influence on foraging strategies, social behaviors, support use, and associated prehensile‐tail use. In this research, I examine ontogenetic patterns of prehensile‐tail use in Cebus capucinus and Alouatta palliata. I collected behavioral data on activity, positional context, support size, and prehensile‐tail use in five age categories of white‐faced capuchins and mantled howlers during a 12‐month period at Estación Biológica La Suerte in northeastern Costa Rica. Infant and juvenile howlers and capuchins were found to use their prehensile tails significantly more often than adults during feeding, foraging, and social behavior. Prehensile‐tail use did not show predictable increases during growth. In both species, adults used their prehensile tails in mass‐bearing modes significantly less often than juveniles. Despite differences in tail anatomy in Cebus and Alouatta, prehensile‐tail use was observed to follow an increasing trajectory from infancy, peaking during juvenescence, and then decreasing in older juveniles and adults. In both species, it appeared that adult patterns of prehensile‐tail use reflected the demands placed on young juveniles. Am. J. Primatol. 74:770‐782, 2012. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.  相似文献

We address the generic limits of Gnidia (Thymelaeaceae) through a phylogenetic analysis of nuclear ribosomal DNA internal transcribed spacer (ITS) and plastid rbcL, trnL intron and trnL‐F intergenic spacer regions. Maximum parsimony and Bayesian inference were used to produce trees and assess internal support. The most significant conclusion drawn from the molecular analysis is that Gnidia is polyphyletic as currently circumscribed, comprising at least four distinct lineages that are each related to other genera within Thymelaeoideae. Gnidia pinifolia and G. racemosa are members of a clade within which Struthiola is embedded; a second group of species allies with Drapetes as sister to Passerina; and a third lineage corresponds to the previously recognized genus Lasiosiphon. The remaining species of Gnidia included in this study are allied with the Australian genus Pimelea. The taxonomic implications of these findings are discussed in relation to the principle of monophyly. © 2009 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society, 2009, 160 , 402–417.  相似文献

Clonal growth in introduced populations of Japanese Knotweed ( Fallopia juponica ) in Britain was assessed using RAPDs (Randomly Amplified Polymorphic DNA). A total of 150 British samples was analysed for genetic variation using ten arbitrary decamer primers, and compared with data from 16 samples of other introduced populations from Europe and the U.S.A. All samples produced an identical multi-primer RAPD profile. Accepting that RAPD profile identity need not equate to genet identity, based on the sensitivity of these markers for detecting genetic diversity in related taxa and on the absence of male fertile individuals of this species in Britain, we interpret this result as consistent with the presence of a single, exceptionally widespread clone. This clone must represent one of the world's largest vascular plants.  相似文献

Abstract: A new genus and species of basal non‐Viverravidae Carnivoramorpha, Dawsonicyon isami, is named and described. This new taxon is based upon DMNH 19585, an almost complete skeleton, which was collected from the Black’s Fork Member (informal ‘Bridger B’ subunit) of the Bridger Formation in southwestern Wyoming, USA. The specimen is incorporated into an existing craniodental data matrix, and the associated phylogenetic analyses support the identification of this species as a new basal carnivoramorphan. This new taxon is dentally compared to all known genera of non‐viverravid basal carnivoramorphans, as well as with all known species of the problematic genus Miacis. Postcrania are compared in detail with other described specimens of non‐viverravid basal carnivoramorphans and more generally with known postcrania of viverravids. Preliminary functional interpretations of a scansorial locomotor mode are offered for this new taxon. Its implications for the diversity of middle Eocene basal carnivoramorphans is briefly discussed, including expansion of the already high diversity in the Black’s Fork Member of the Bridger Formation (at least 11 species in 8 genera).  相似文献
