Abstract.  1. Determinants of host-use patterns in plant-feeding insects have been extensively studied, usually within the framework of optimality theory. Comparatively, factors driving host selection in saprophagous insects have received little attention.
2. In this study, mechanisms creating occurrence peaks of saprophagous wood-borers (Cerambycidae: Coleoptera) in standing dead aspen in the middle and late stages of decay were investigated by correlating insect occurrence with variations in substrate-related nutritional and physical parameters. Twenty-four snags at four decay stages were dissected from a mature stand in western Quebec, Canada. Wood samples were taken to measure levels of nitrogen, non-structural carbohydrates, phenols, wood density, water content and snag age.
3. Several nutritional and physical parameters varied significantly along the decay gradient and were correlated with insect occurrence, but all significant parameters were also strongly correlated with snag age and wood density. Model selection using Akaike's second order information criteria was used to rank the different models; the model including snag age only performed best, with a wi of 0.873.
4. This importance of snag age gives support to a proposed hypothesis of host selection in which temporal autocorrelation in probability of insect occurrence explains peaks observed in the middle and late stages of decay. However, further studies will be needed to confirm the prevalence of such neutral mechanisms over active selection in the determination of host-use patterns in decaying aspen.  相似文献

Phylogenetic relationships between taxa are not necessarily reflected by morphological data due to widespread homoplasy and convergence. However, combining morphological and molecular data provides insights into the evolution of biological forms and into the potential factors involved. Here we focus on a complex of three taxa of bats with unclear taxonomic affinities: Myotis myotis, Myotis blythii and Myotis punicus. Traditional morphometric methods failed to separate them, whereas recent molecular‐based studies suggested that they constitute separate biological species. In the present study, landmark‐based geometric morphometrics methods have been used to analyse the skull variability of 218 specimens belonging to this species complex. Patterns of size and shape delimitate three morphological groups that are congruent with the proposed taxonomic assignments, and therefore support species rank for all three major groups. These morphometrics results, however, suggest that M. myotis and M. punicus share shape characteristics in the rostrum and in the posterior part of the skull that differ from M. blythii. Because previous molecular phylogenetic analyses suggested that M. myotis and M. blythii are sister species, we interpret the similitude in skull morphology between M. myotis and M. punicus as a convergence probably related to their similar feeding habits. Within the taxon M. punicus, the skull of Corsican and Sardinian populations significantly differs from that of Maghrebian ones, suggesting the existence of further cryptic taxonomic diversity. © 2008 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2008, 95 , 529–538.  相似文献

Mesochaetopterus rogeri sp. nov. , a new large chaetopterid polychaete from the Mediterranean Sea, is described. The analyses of partial sequences from the nuclear 18S rRNA (643 bp) and the mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase I (577 bp) genes of representative individuals of all known chaetopterid genera indicated the initial assignment of the new species into Mesochaetopterus . These analyses also supported the monophyly of the family and revealed two well-supported clades: Chaetopterus/Mesochaetopterus and Spiochaetopterus/Phyllochaetopterus . Mesochaetopterus rogeri sp. nov. is close to Mesochaetopterus xerecus , which is redescribed here from newly collected material. Mesochaetopterus rogeri sp. nov. was characterized as follows: (1) two long tentacles with dorsal transversal black bands of alternating widths (sometimes with two additional longitudinal light-brown bands); (2) region A with nine chaetigers (up to 12), with 13–19 modified chaetae in the fourth chaetiger; (3) region B with three flat segments, with accessory feeding organs in the second and third segments; (4) sandy straight tubes, 2.5-m long or more, vertically embedded in the sand. In the Bay of Blanes, M. rogeri sp. nov. occurs between 6- and 9-m deep (but also up to 30-m deep), in a patchy distribution (< 1 individual m−2), with maximum densities in April/June (likely to be the result of recruitment events), and minimum densities in September/November (likely to be a behavioural response to increasing sediment dynamics). Although it was originally thought that M. rogeri sp. nov. could be an introduced species, we argue that it is probably a native of the Mediterranean that has been overlooked by scientists up to now.  © 2008 The Linnean Society of London, Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2008, 152 , 201–225.  相似文献
