Toxins from Helminthosporium maydis race T and Phyllosticta maydis have been found to affect the functional processes of corn mitochondria isolated from Texas male-sterile (T) cytoplasm, but not of mitochondria isolated from nonsterile (N) cytoplasm. The effects of chemicals known to induce responses similar to those of the toxin were compared on mitochondria isolated from T and N cytoplasm inbreds (W64A, Zea mays L.). Valinomycin, gramicidin, and decenylsuccinic acid (DSA) each caused more swelling (measured by transmission changes in %) of N mitochondria than of T mitochondira. The stimulation of exogenous NADH oxidation was the same for N and T mitochondria in the valinomycin, DSA, and Ca2+ plus phosphate treatments, was greater for T mitochondria than for N mitochondria in the gramicidin and DNP treatments, and was greater for N mitochondrai than for T mitochondira in the Ca+2 minus phosphate treatment. Sodium azide inhibited NADH oxidation equally for N and T mitochondria. In addition, N and T mitochondria had similar respiration rates for various substrates and equal efficiencies of oxidative phosphorylation. In contrast to the specificity of toxins for T mitochondria, none of the treatment effects were specific for N or T mitochondria. The results indicate that mitochondria isolated from N and T cytoplasm generally respond similarly to various conditions, but that there can be quantitative differences in the response. The extent to which these differences represent cytoplasmically controlled modification of mitochondrial physiology or structure is not known.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. Specimens of the rare ciliate Discomorphella pectinata (Levander, 1894) Corliss, 1960 were impregnated with silver nitrate in 1963. The body is discoid, about 60 μ m long, laterally compressed and adorned with long spines. The somatic kineties on the right and left sides are sparse, sometimes disorganized, and locally without cilia. The oral zone has a complex infraciliature that lies above two series of ventral kineties and below a large, visor-like, epistomial fringe. The arrangement of this fringe is similar to that observed in some other heterotichous ciliates, notably members of the Metopidae and Caenomorphidae.  相似文献

1.  Amphidromous shrimps live and breed in freshwater rivers and streams, but their larvae require development in sea water. Larvae may hatch upstream and then drift to the sea, although in some species females have been reported to migrate to the coast before larvae are released. Here, we tested the relative importance of larval drift and female migration in Macrobrachium ohione (Decapoda: Palaemonidae) in a distributary of the Mississippi River in Louisiana, U.S.A.
2.  Newly hatched (stage-1) larvae are nonfeeding and will not moult to stage 2 (first feeding stage) without encountering salt water. A factorial experiment was conducted in the laboratory to test the effects on moulting to stage 2 of (i) time spent by stage-1 larvae in fresh water before (ii) exposure to and maintenance in water of different salinity. Larvae kept in fresh water for 1 or 3 days before a change to saline water at 6 or 10 ppt showed a greater frequency of moulting than those kept for longer (5 days) in fresh water or changed to less saline water (2 ppt). Non-moulting larvae died or were moribund within 11 days of hatching.
3.  The relative abundance of stage-1 larvae was measured with plankton tows at two locations in the river c. 150 km apart, one near the sea and one upstream. Larval abundances near the sea were significantly greater than those upstream.
4.  The results indicate that hatched larvae of M. ohione have a limited period in which to drift in fresh water before reaching water sufficiently saline to stimulate moulting to the first feeding stage. Female migrations may play an important role in delivering larvae of amphidromous species from large continental river systems in which distances to the sea are great, while larval drift alone may be sufficient in species living in short streams, like those found in many small mountainous tropical islands.  相似文献
