SUMMARY. 1. Regeneration of ammonium and phosphate by macro-zooplankton (Cladocera. adult copepods. and copepodites) was measured in Lake Calado. an Amazon floodplain lake, Macrozooplanktonabundances ranged between 1×104 and 3×105 individuals m−2.
2. Phosphate regeneration ranged from 0.2 to 1.3 μ mol PO4 m−2 b−1at station 1. located 2 km from the Solimoes River, and from 1.6 to8.3 μ mol PO4 m−2 h −1 at station 3, located 7 km from the SolimoesRiver. Ammonium regeneration at stations 1 and 3 ranged from 1.7 to11.9 and from 13.4 to 77.2 μ mol NH4 m−2 h−1. respectively.
3. Zooplankton regenerated ammonium and phosphate at similarrates during rising and falling waier. Regeneration by macrozooplankton was low compared to other tropical lakes and compared to microbesand microzooplankton in Lake Calado.  相似文献

Abstract: The OcruranusEohalobia group, whose members were variously considered to be brachiopods, bivalves, chitons, tommotiids and coeloscleritophorans, are difficult to classify because of lack of morphological detail and evidence for skeletal reconstruction. New specimens from South China reveal more information about OcruranusEohalobia and allow progress towards deciphering the skeletal reconstruction and phylogenetic affinity of this enigmatic group. Many specimens have a phosphatic inner and outer coat (mould) with empty space in between that resulted from dissolution of the original shell. Moreover, many of the internal moulds show a previously unknown type of shell microstructure that consisted of stacked layers of highly organized, acicular crystallites that radiated from the apex of the shell towards the aperture. The dissolved shell and needle‐like crystals suggest an original calcareous, probably aragonitic, shell mineralogy. A few specimens also show a polygonal texture in regions that suggests the shell had a thin, prismatic inner shell microstructure. Ocruranus and Eohalobia belong to the same skeleton, and we herein synonymize Eohalobia with the older Ocruranus. Moreover, new specimens from Meishucun reveal a third type of shell plate, similar in form and inferred placement to intermediate valves of chitons. Ocruranus is likely a mollusc, and possibly a member of the chiton stem lineage. If so, then the beginning of the known record of chitons would be extended back from late Cambrian (Saukia Zone; Furongian) to early Cambrian (Meishucunian; Series 1).  相似文献

Bioenergy production is driving modifications to native plant species for use as novel biofuel crops. Key aims are to increase crop growth rates and to enhance conversion efficiency by reducing biomass recalcitrance to digestion. However, selection for these biofuel‐valuable traits has potential to compromise plant defenses and alter interactions with pests and pathogens. Insect‐vectored plant viruses are of particular concern because perennial crops have potential to serve as virus reservoirs that influence regional disease dynamics. In this study, we examined relationships between growth rates and biomass recalcitrance in five switchgrass (Panicum virgatum) populations, ranging from near‐wildtype to highly selected cultivars, in a common garden trial. We measured biomass accumulation rates and assayed foliage for acid detergent lignin, neutral detergent fiber, in vitro neutral detergent fiber digestibility and in vitro true dry matter digestibility. We then evaluated relationships between these traits and susceptibility to a widely distributed group of aphid‐transmitted Poaceae viruses (Luteoviridae: Barley and cereal yellow dwarf viruses, B/CYDVs). Virus infection rates and prevalence were assayed with RT‐PCR in the common garden, in greenhouse inoculation trials, and in previously established switchgrass stands across a 300‐km transect in Michigan, USA. Aphid host preferences were quantified in a series of arena host choice tests with field‐grown foliage. Contrary to expectations, biomass accumulation rates and foliar digestibility were not strongly linked in switchgrass populations we examined, and largely represented two different trait axes. Natural B/CYDV prevalence in established switchgrass stands ranged from 0% to 28%. In experiments, susceptibility varied notably among switchgrass populations and was more strongly predicted by potential biomass accumulation rates than by foliar digestibility; highly selected, productive cultivars were most virus‐susceptible and most preferred by aphids. Evaluation and mitigation of virus susceptibility of new biofuel crops is recommended to avert possible unintended consequences of biofuel production on regional pathogen dynamics.  相似文献

1. Biofilm development and activity on wood substrata (Nothofagus menziesii) were examined at four forested sites in a South Island, New Zealand, river catchment over a period of 6 months. Two of the sites had brown waters and mean pH of 3.7 and 4.5, whereas the other two had clear waters and mean pH of 6.3 and 6.8. 2. Fungi and other filamentous heterotrophs were the dominant colonizers of wood at all sites; few algal cells were present. Incorporation of 14C-glucose by biofilms was greatest in all four streams after 3 months, whereas endocellulase activity fluctuated over time and temporal patterns differed among streams. 3. No clear relationship was found between the incorporation of 14C-glucose or endocellulase activity of biofilms and pH, although at one near-neutral pH site 14C-glucose uptake increased in response to nutrient (N + P) additions. 4. After 6 months, incorporation of 14C-glucose and endocellulase activity of biofilms on Pinus radiata dowels buried vertically in the stream beds did not differ at depths of 3–9 cm and 19–25 cm in each stream. 5. Radiotracer experiments with a grazing amphipod (Paraleptamphopus sp.) demonstrated that biofilms on wood from all four sites could be ingested and at least partially assimilated. Chironomid larvae and harpacricoid copepods were the most abundant invertebrates colonizing wood substrata at all sites. Different chironomid species dominated at acidic and near-neutral pH sites. 6. Overall, our findings provide little support for the hypothesis that microbial activity on organic substrata is necessarily lower in streams of low pH.  相似文献

Releaser pheromones have direct behavioural effects to arrest, attract or disperse insects, whereas interactions within groups of social insects are often influenced by primer pheromones. The behaviour of insects displaying intermediate levels of sociality is largely unexplored in this context. In the present study, both the gregariousness and arrestment (settling near the odour source) of bed bugs Cimex lectularius L. (Hemiptera: Cimicidae) in response to conspecific exuvial extracts are described. Adult males are arrested on filter papers with extracts derived from exuviae of fifth‐instar nymphs. Adult females and nymphs display no significant evidence for such behaviour. Adults of both sexes show no preference for extracts of male versus female fifth‐instar exuviae. Arrestment of adult males does not occur on papers treated with fourth‐instar exuvial extracts. Because the insects are assayed behaviourally in groups, an index is calculated describing how far bugs are away from being located independently of one another, as a measure of gregariousness. Adult males have lower values for this index (i.e. locations are closer to independence). Adult females, nymph cohorts and mixed age groups all have higher values for this index, which tend to increase over time. Females exhibit a clear increasing dose‐dependent relationship for this index. It is concluded that the extracts of fifth‐instar nymphal exuvia arrest males on refuges that possess the odour source. However, gregariousness is induced in females, without evidence of a tendency to assemble near the odour source.  相似文献
