Genetic and Hormonal Regulation of Vitellogenesis in Drosophila 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
In Drosophila the female-specific yolk protein, or vitellogenin,is synthesized in the fat body. In D. melanogaster, vitellogenin,is first detected in the female hemolymph at the time of adulteclosion and in the ovaries 20 hours later, suggesting differentregulatory mechanisms for the processes of synthesis and uptake.Transplantations of pupal or immature adult ovaries into D.melanogaster adult males induce vitellogenin synthesis, implicatingan ovarian agent in the control of synthesis. Larval ovariesfail to stimulate synthesis. Female-sterile mutants with rudimentaryor previtellogenic ovaries synthesize and accumulate large quantitiesof vitellogenin in the hemolymph, but not in the ovaries. Transplantationof these rudimentary ovaries into males induces vitellogeninsynthesis, suggesting that the ovarian inducing agent does notoriginate from the germ cells. Treatment of the homozygous female-sterilemutants with juvenile hormone stimulates the uptake of vitellogeninby the ovary in some strains. This shows that juvenile hormoneplays a role in vitellogenin uptake. The potential importanceof Drosophila vitellogenesis for studies of gene regulationis discussed. 相似文献

Plasmodium sporozoites, the causative agents of malaria, release circumsporozoite (CS) protein into medium when under conditions simulating those that the parasites encounter in the bloodstream of the vertebrate host. CS protein of the rodent parasite, Plasmodium berghei , is released as the lower molecular weight form, Pb44. This release is substratum- and antibody-independent. Previous studies show that CS protein is released at the trailing, posterior end of motile sporozoites. Video and electron microscopic studies now demonstrate that CS protein is released at the apical end of cytochalasin b-immobilized sporozoites. We propose that CS protein released from the apical end, the leading end of gliding sporozoites, adheres to the sporozoite surface and is translocated posteriorly by a cytochalasin-sensitive and apparently actin-mediated surface motor, which drives gliding motility. This model explains the mechanism of both the circumsporozoite precipitation (CSP) reaction and formation of the CS protein trail by gliding sporozoites. 相似文献

Comparative ethological studies of closely related species canplace into clear perspective the functions of behavioral traitsas species diverge and adapt to different environments. In thispaper we contrast the reproductive behavior of species withintwo crustacean groups: the mantis shrimps (stomatopods) andthe fiddler crabs (genus Uca). For the stomatopods, we identifyprobable selective relationships between features of species'ecology and their mating systems. Population density, the kindand availability of shelters in which these shrimps live, theintensity of predation and spawning cycles all play importantroles in molding reproductive behavior in this group. Associationsbetween the ecology and mating systems of fiddler crabs havebeen discussed recently elsewhere. Here we focus on a comparativeanalysis of sexual communication in these crabs. A study ofcompetitive courtship signaling and mate choice in the fiddlercrab Uca beebei has shown that certain male courtship signalsare highly attractive probably because they exploit female sensory-responsesystems that have been molded by selection for escape from predators.Interspecific comparison of male courtship displays and theresponses of females to these displays suggest that sensoryexploitation may play an important role in the evolution ofsexual signals in the genus. Immunoelectron microscopic techniques were utilized to characterize the morphology of circumsporozoite protein-containing trails deposited on various substrates by gliding Plasmodium berghei and Plasmodium falciparum sporozoites. The basic components of the trails are beadlike particles, 25 to 90 nm in diameter, which are devoid of unit membrane and have an electronlucent center. Trails were captured on formvar-covered grids coated with anticircumsporozoite protein monoclonal antibodies and compared with trails produced on uncoated formvar; the results suggest that material containing circumsporozoite protein forms the matrix within which the particles are embedded. The trails exhibit morphological features similar to those displayed by circumsporozoite precipitation reactions; of note is the demonstration of sheaths of circumsporozoite protein-containing material that emanate from sporozoites prior to their gliding. The sheaths narrow into accumulations of electron-dense material, which eventually taper to form typical trails. The structural manifestation of sheaths and other morphological details of the formed trails enables us to correlate sporozoite behavior during trail formation with the motile actions of gliding sporozoites observed by light microscopy. 相似文献

The ability of primary wheat grains (cv. Sappo) to germinatewas determined at different times from anthesis. Fresh, prematurelyharvested grains germinated best at low temperatures (<10°C). The temperature range over which appreciable germinationtook place broadened and the maximum percentage germinationachieved increased with lengthening time between anthesis andharvest. Chilling and exogenous applications of GA3 each affectedthe rate of germination and the maximum percentage germinationof grains in their own ways. Typical thoracic setae are composed of longitudinally arranged cylinders ending as teeth at the oblique distal surface. Most thoracic 'blades' are rounded in cross section and show bilateral asymmetry. Some have teeth in oblique rows ("cross striations") on the side adjoining the tube wall. Sickle setae found posteriorly on the thorax have distal portions like abdominal setae. These are flat, each composed mainly of a palisade of spatulate units. On one side cylindrical elements may also be present, in patterns which are characteristic of some taxa. Uncini are made of rows (sometimes single) of shorter cylindrical elements with hooked ends pointing anteriorly. Anterior thoracic hooks are usually blunt, but pointed in the genus Janua. The collar setae assist withdrawal into the tube, the abdominal setae help with emergence, whilst other thoracic setae act as distance pieces, pushing the body to anchor the thoracic uncini against the opposite wall. The other uncini are brought into use by the prehensile abdomen. The flaccid ends of the sickle setae are readily lost in some taxa and their development or loss may reflect unimportant variations in strength of the adjacent abdominal field. Fin and blade setae are not very different from simple setae and the natural grouping of the genera into subfamilies shows that changes from one form of collar seta to another have occurred independently several times. 相似文献
