Gibberellins (GAs) were effective in promoting flowering in sexually mature (45-year-old scions) grafts of loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.). Seed-cone production was increased 12-fold in field-grown, grafted ramets by bi-weekly, May-September applications of 500 μg per branch of GA4/7. Gibberellin A3 was equally effective at 500 μg but not at 100 μg per branch, while GA5 was ineffective at either concentration. A second study using potted, less-sexually mature (8-to 10-year-old scions) grafts gave a reduced level of seed cones in response to GAs. However, even on these younger grafts GA4/7 was a significant promotive treatment, GA3 being considerably less effective. Branch girdling, tested as an adjunct treatment, was ineffective. It is now apparent that exogenous applications of GA4/7 are effective on a number of Pinaceae species, and their use to promote earlier and more abundant flowering in breeding orchards of grafted ramets for at least two species, loblolly pine and Douglas fir [Pseudotsuga menziesii (Mirb.) In an earlier study, we found that rice (Oryza sativa) grown in nutrient solution well‐supplied with Zn preferentially took up light 64Zn over 66Zn, probably as a result of kinetic fractionation in membrane transport processes. Here, we measure isotope fractionation by rice in a submerged Zn‐deficient soil with and without Zn fertilizer. We grew the same genotype as in the nutrient solution study plus low‐Zn tolerant and intolerant lines from a recombinant inbred population. In contrast to the nutrient solution, in soil with Zn fertilizer we found little or heavy isotopic enrichment in the plants relative to plant‐available Zn in the soil, and in soil without Zn fertilizer we found consistently heavy enrichment, particularly in the low‐Zn tolerant line. These observations are only explicable by complexation of Zn by a complexing agent released from the roots and uptake of the complexed Zn by specific root transporters. We show with a mathematical model that, for realistic rates of secretion of the phytosiderophore deoxymugineic acid (DMA) by rice, and realistic parameters for the Zn‐solubilizing effect of DMA in soil, solubilization and uptake by this mechanism is necessary and sufficient to account for the measured Zn uptake and the differences between genotypes. 相似文献

Abstract: Well-preserved floras from the Alpine Early–Middle Triassic are rare, and thus our understanding of the vegetation in this area during this period of time continues to be incomplete. As a result, every new find represents a significant piece of information that deserves thoughtful consideration. Anisian (Middle Triassic) sphenophytes and pteridosperms have recently been recovered from the Kühwiesenkopf locality (Monte Prà della Vacca) in northern Italy. The sphenophytes are represented by stem fragments, strobili and isolated sporangiophore heads of Equisetites , as well as by a few specimens of Neocalamites sp. and Echinostachys sp. The pteridosperms include abundant remains of the peltasperm foliage type Scytophyllum bergeri . A second Scytophyllum species in this flora, S. apoldense , is regarded as conspecific with S. bergeri based on epidermal anatomy; the two morphotypes are interpreted as sun and shade leaves of a single biological species. The seed-bearing disc Peltaspermum bornemannii sp. nov. probably represents the female reproductive structure of S. bergeri . Additional pteridosperm remains include foliage assignable to Sagenopteris sp. and Ptilozamites sp., in both cases perhaps the earliest records of these genera. 相似文献

We adapted a recently developed nonrestrictional, nonligational genome walking method, Universal Fast Walking (UFW), for detection of length polymorphism in the proximal promoter region of genes. We demonstrate its efficacy at discovering naturally occurring transposition into heat‐shock genes of wild Drosophila and show that it surmounts limitations of simple polymerase chain reaction (PCR) approaches. We further present modifications to the standard UFW protocol and provide some guidelines to improve specificity. Although the resultant banding pattern of a standard UFW can be regarded as a DNA fingerprint, many amplicons result from false priming and not real polymorphisms. We describe ways to distinguish between UFW amplicons and false priming products in a high‐throughput assay. 相似文献

Abstract: Large footprints of terrestrial tetrapods have been found in the Cis-Urals region of European Russia. The footprint horizon is in Late Permian (Changhsingian) deposits of the Vyatkian Gorizont (uppermost Tatarian) approximately 50 m below the local Permian/Triassic boundary. Seventeen randomly orientated footprints were excavated and are referred to the ichnospecies Brontopus giganteus . The footprints were emplaced in a reddish-brown mudstone that was deposited from suspension beneath shallow ponded water in a floodplain environment. They were subsequently cast by the base of the overlying fine-grained sandstone, which was deposited from a sheet-flood event. The footprints were produced by a large therapsid, possibly a dinocephalian, but more probably a dicynodont, and represent the first ichnological record of the Therapsida from the Upper Permian of Russia. 相似文献
